The ones that fight Chaos I mean, theirs conflicting material on this, I've read novels were the guard who fight chaos are sometimes allowed even found planets(or maybe this is just a way to keep them away from greater Imperial society by putting them at the fringes of the Imperium), but theirs also material in the codex that says that Imperial citizens are not allowed knowlege of Chaos and all that come into contact are executed or have their minds scrubbed.

Not as far as I know. If that kind of thing got out it would be damned bad for moral and you would have more turning then not.

Once the service is up they can muster out.

I think at times they try to make it more grimdark then others, they can't get people too depressed anymore than they can get them too happy, just enough despair and hope to keep it interesting.

Yes and no.

If it's a story in a Chaos Codex or a Chaos-focussed novel, yes. Because it makes Chaos look scary and awsome. And Chaos fans are the most likely readers.

If it's a story in an Imperial Codex or an Imperial-focussed novel, no. Because it would take away the cool from the Imperial faction. And Imperial fans are the most likely readers.

I'm pretty sure death is the eventual fate of all IG.. they tend to not last very long anyway...

My guess is it also has to do with how the guard acted, if alot of them started carving eight pointed stars on their foreheads then the rest better join chaos before their all turned into servitors.

Some regiments retire, they tend to form the first wave of colonists on a newly reclaimed planet...
Tends to work well because they are hardened combat troops by then and know what they are doing for the most part...

I dont know about that, there arent any real fan groups, most people enjoy all the fluff. Also, the grey knights and space wolves books talk about guardsmen executed after armageddon

That was more an isolated incident , and most were mind wiped not killed. And not all of them , just ones who took part of some battles and that mostly was to hide the fact Gray knights where involved and they saw things they should not. It was a purely Inquisition call , not one made my the Guards.

Not standard practice, but then the Inquisition will bio-bomb a village, town hive or whole worlds to stop somethings from getting out, not because someone is tainted or infected, just be case there it s tinny, tiny chance they might be.

If they are going to get executed, it will be before they actually retire. Most likely right after they finish fighting chaos. If they aren't executed at that time (pick your reason), I think they get a pass.

If a Guardsman has survived to his retirement date he is dropped off on the nearest planet to begin a new life. Sometimes entire regiments are retired and are given large swaths on land as a reward. They won't be going back home in any regard, the Galaxy is too vast and warp travel too complicated/dangerous to be "wasted" on returning retired Guardsmen across the Galaxy.

As for ones who have fought Chaos, unless they've encountered a major Daemonic incursions it's unlikely.

No They get discharged like all other Guardsmen who live that long. They are just held as know top secret info like when a FBI or CIA agent's service ends they are just held privy to top secret info

Not usually. Most of the time they settle down on a conquered planet, actually.

It is only when they face mind-shattering things such as major daemonic infestations-- themselves extremely rare-- that they tend to be executed.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Krieg! What a hole...

Even then, noone killed the millions of Krieger that took part of the Siege of Vraks, despite fething An'ggrath dropping by to say hello.

Yeah its more or less purely an Inquisition based call.

Yep which I pointed out before. They can be heavy handed, the Inquisition and the Gray Knights are one and the same, the Gray Knights are a force of the Inquisition.

The more puritan and die hard the Inquisitor is, the bigger the chance he'll shoot he lot of them and maybe bio-bomb the world, kill every member of the fleet and maybe the admech. Just to be sure no taint got out.

But the Guard itself has no such policy about shooting folks because they saw a daemon or something.

Despite the utter stupidity and incompetence of the internet in its continued flanderization of the Imperial Guard, yes.
