Well it's official. The UK is back in recession.

Last time round I was made redundant and spent half a year unemployed. I know many people who are still struggling and out of work. Being in Construction, well architecture, My industry has been hit hard.

This is bleak news.

Difference between -0.1% growth and +0.1% growth is irrelevent really. Demand is being stripped out of the economy by our government, economic stagnation was inevitable.

+1 to that, I wasn't even aware that we were out of a recession...

Though as my colleague pointed out, the 'technical' definition of recession and the 'real-world' economic state are largely unrelated.

While it pains me to give an Architect advice (I'm of a QSing background - hoaray!) you're in the wrong part of the country for construction ATM. The Commercial sector in London is begining to expand again and many companies are hiring on the basis that later in the year they will have much work. I've had a good offer in the last few weeks and anticipate another later on this week. If you can relocate (or commute - not unknown?) you might find more luck here.

The compression in the construction industry (-0.3%), which this has been blamed on was to be expected (with the majority of the Olympic works complete). Other areas (Services +0.1%) are growing so judging by the activity in this neck of the woods I can see us bouncing back quite quickly.

I'm not an architect thankfully. But a Architectural Technician. Yes Yorkshire is not the best part of the UK to find work and in truth I have always seen work in London, I'm not willing to move to London on the account that I hate the place and I have too much invested up here to up sticks and move on.

I do agree with the comment that things are picking up. More so down south. But it's still bleak for us up north, this news will do confidence no good at all.

... and tomorrow there will be a report that says all ok, then next week doom, then minor doom, then joy, etc, etc. I wish they would stop printing these reports as they are pointless to 99.9999% of us.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Yes, recession is just a government term/thing. Everyone being poor, that didn't stop. But the actual recession term/state is based on numbers and stuff Not on wether people have money or not.

Since at the end of the day economics appears (from my layman's PoV) to rely on confidence, anyone who mentions the British economy in my presence shall be stabbed in the neck. If we can proliferate this practice, confidence and consumption should increase, yes?

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Spending would increadse if people had money - fun fact

Increases in tax such as VAT and fuel taxes drive up the price of everything at every level of purchasing. Cutting them would give people more spending power, make them feel better, give companies more profits (before even factoring people buying more stuff), and generally help everyone... But that is a much less direct method of filling government's pockets, so that will never happen...
