Now I played Star Wars miniatures for a long time (The WoTC version), that is not what this thread is about. My question for the community is, what if GamesWorkshop had the rights to Star Wars and was able to make a Warhammer 40k-type Star Wars table top game? Would anyone be interested? I think it'd be awesome. I'd be pretty stoked about building Star Wars miniatures and painting troopers and Jedi/Sith and so on. I think it would be a blast, what do you guys thing?

I'd prefer they take a route different than 40k's or fantasy's. The rules would have to be very unique and if they at all mirrored the films, people would call BS on the stormtrooper effect as well as several other things that would be infuriating for the baddies. I would probably prefer painting the models rather than gaming due to the predicted brokenness.

I could see a skirmish game being made for it doing well, but a full 40k scale I don't think would work well.
That said, I'd spend every penny I have on some high quality plastic Star Wars models if they were 28mm proper(non heroic).
I'd probably not play the game but would devote all my time into recreating scenes as display pieces. And I'd buy like 19 Boba Fett models.

I don't know how the rules would turn out. But the models would be great. Especially if the models weren't heroically scaled.
Although there are some nice star wars miniatures out there already.

If you want nice star wars minis in proper 25mm scale look no further than knight miniatures. I think these would be the guys to take a star wars skirmish game forward if anyone is to do it.

Any company doing it would be nice, honestly, and with the extended lore there are so many armies they could create rules for. I'd be fine with large 40k type of battles, why? I played the WoTC miniatures forever, it was small scale, I want to use the tanks and walkers that were seen in episode 2-3. I want to see massive Wookiees swarming droids, I want-I mean don't want to see ewoks killing Chicken Walkers (At-Ats) though lol.

I'm not a fan of anything Star Wars related aside from the six movies and Jedi Power Battles (the only non-movie thing that didn't totally blow).

I know everyone is complaining about GW because of the broken 40K and Fantasy rules, but their overlooking the fact that if they made this it'd more likely be closer to the ruleset for LOTR, which is actually quite good all around
I'd probably play this, give us X-Wings and A-Wings and Tie Fighters on flying bases, excellent models of everything from Jabba the Hutt to Storm Troopers, to Ewoks to Twi'Leks, and a balanced ruleset and I'll be happy
LOTR had skirmishes possible, but it also had the ability for huge battles with Mumakil, the Watcher in the Water and Balrogs and so on, I'm sure Star Wars could be pulled off just as well
To be completely honest, I think GW are in rules terms better with LOTR in part because the rules aren't constantly being updated, and all the rules for the armies are basically in one big book
So I say to GW, go ahead, make a Star Wars game in the same way with one big book and all kinds of models, and as many of the factions as possible (Empire, Rebel Alliance, Jabba's forces, Bounty Hunters, Trade Federation and so on)

There is so much in the extended lore (as well as the core stuff) that they could pull from as well.
Empire
Rebels
Mercenaries (Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Neutral Parties)
Mandalorians (Old and New)
Old Republic
Grand Republic (before order 66)
New Republic
Yuuzhan Vong
Sith (Old Republic Sith, New Republic Sith)
Each of those has a plethora of named characters, vehicles, troops, equipment, lore, and so on.
Not to mention the plethora of campaign books that could be made to mirror these armies (much like how ForgeWorld does the Imperial Armour books).
I think it would be a blast honestly.
The interesting thing is that Fantasy Flight Games does GW's RPG books if I am not mistaken and if I recall they got the rights to produce Star Wars games/ RPG source books now seeing as WoTC lost/let the contract go.

If GW made GW-quality Star Wars minis...I'd buy it all. Well, enough of each model to be appropriate (3000 Boba Fetts). It would be glorious. Don't even care about the game, I'd want the models. Warhammer might take a backseat to this idea...

@Jstncloud, exactly, I'm not really the best with the expanded universe, but others like you and no doubt the people making this would be able to make an enormous amount of models and factions
Also, lets face it. Who wouldn't love an enormous Forge World made AT-AT or to buy a huge plastic T-65 X-Wing set

I think Knight models already makes star wars minis that are very nice. No rules though.
I don't really know that star wars is a good wargame setting. There are certain characters like jedi that are practically one man armies. It could be done but it would probably be tricky to get the right feel without breaking the balance or making jedi too appealing.
If GW got the rights and tried it I'm sure the rules would suck. They haven't made a good rules set since mordheim or necromunda and even those are getting a little(only a little) dated. There would be some amazing plastic ships and stormtroopers out of it but not much else.
Now, if someone like fantasy flight wrote the rules and GW produced the plastics it would probably be a winner.

Just to chime in, lest us not forget when Order 66 went out and the clones (humans) all but annihilated 99% of the Jedi in nearly an instant. There is a difference between a droid firing at a Jedi and a human (at least in my opinion). I agree Jedi are a beast, but the same can be said for pretty much any named HQ with their armor and invulnerability saves what is different between a named HQ and a Jedi?
If they did it in any way like the old WoTC miniatures we'd also have a huge selection or upgrade characters, officers, sergeants, etc etc that are not Jedi, the empire for example is pretty limited on Sith (bad Jedi) however I imagine Grand Adminral Thrawn would have some immunity to powers and would be a beast in terms of synergy with the army he would be leading and he is not a Jedi. That is just one example, another would be things such as the republic commando fellows, or Carth Onasi, and so on.

GW wouldn't bid for it. Lucas is more strict with his IP than they are with their own "homaged" IP.
They have stated time and time again that they are not interested in other parties' IP (they only get Lotr because of deals with Peter Jackson and the Perrys).
They'd only make a hash of it (lets face it, HASBRO couldn't make it work - GW have no chance).

@chromedog... The OP is stating a hypothetical... so to argue against the very possibility of the hypothetical invalidates the whole discussion and the purpose of the thread. Implicitly you must accept the hypothetical to discuss it. GW vs Hasbro, GW can get away with charging higher prices which makes all the difference and the fact that its in the hobby market allows them to focus quality control effort on the models over other things like "painting".
IF GW got the rights to do a Star Wars miniature game... I tend to believe it would look a bit like the LotR game. I'm not big on fantasy, which is why I never got into the LotR game, but a Star Wars one might just be enough non-fantasy to entice me.

I did think that there was a massive opportunity when the prequels were released. TBH, I'm surprised GW didn't go for it (or perhaps they did, and we didn't hear about it? Who knows)
The Star Wars Universe does seem set to have more long term appeal than LoTR, and having posters of stormtroopers and Darth Vader outside would have been a massive draw to getting new people into the shop. It might have worked well as some kind of game similar to LoTR in fact.
But yeah, I think it would have potentially been a massive gold mine, perhaps not so much these days.

It is funny that you should mention that, as it is my understanding that Fantasy Flight has the rights to produce a SW skirmish game.
This being said, even West End Games could not make a big success of Star Wars Miniature Battles. I think the lack of success of SW games is due to the fact that there are many types of SW fans. Some like the individual characters, while others like the larger scale setting. Maybe a very small skirmish setting would work with a focus on special terrain.
