Blood Angel Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

Hey everyone,
I'm about to start some serrious work on my Angels Sanguine. (Half red, half black for those who do not know) i am trying to figure out paints to get so they can be lined up once my models are complete. Will be using an airbrush on my minis for the first time, should be fun! I would like to hear what suggestions you guys have for 1) paint company/supplier, 2) color schemes (and/or a way to figure out which colors work together so i can make a scheme without buying every color), or any other suitable advice. I figured some of you have been doing this a lot longer than i have! Even a point in the right direction will be helpful ; i do like researching useful info. I am fairly set on airbrush advice.
Also, for desert bases for my units, are there any better options than boring old sand? Rocks yes, but even they seem a bit over used.
Thank you for your time.

Vallejo German Red-Brown Primer.
Vallejo Model Air Scarlet Red.
Then highlight as normal.

I used VMA Italian Red over Testor's grey primer. The primer is a light grey and I found the scarlet red much too bright over it.

I'll speak for the bases...if you want a desert base and don't want just "sand", pick up some coarse sand or fine gravel at a hardware store...lightly cover the base with it, prime it and paint it to your liking. My personal favorite is a bestial brown > snakebite leather base, with drybrush and highlights of codex grey and bleached bone (using Citadel colors for reference). This gives it a bit darker tone than just "sand", more lending to a harsher climate than the beach or whatever. If you do it right it'll look like the model is on a dark burnt earth with lighter toned rocks and sand about...really cool turnout.

Vallejo sounds great. Just want to make sure, is this their site? http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/gb/index.html Silly foreign companies What retailer do you suggest to buy them through? I also noticed there are Game Colors, Model Colors, and some airbrush paints. Aside from color selection, is there a big difference between the Game and Model colors?
I also like the idea of the grey primer. That way I can use it for bright or dark colors, and I cannot be lazy with black hahaha.

Great idea! I was thinking more in terms of flat sand bases being "meh" compared to some other basing materials. Trying to go all out here - like big scenic rocks and what not. I am thinking of using that flat rock and trying to create small dunes on the base. Sand lumps is the only think I can think of that beats sand flat. I never though of just adding more texture to it by using hardware sand - that will help no mater what I end up doing.
There are just those times when the universe is telling you "You are doing it right". Like when there is a detailed painting video on the army you are about to work on while you are looking for color advice. On top of the rocks I was thinking of using (but ill use a bit more sand)
I am thinking of using the Zuzzy Miniatures Despoiled Reaches mat ( http://www.zuzzy.com/dr-tf-001_terra_flex_gaming_mat.html) to represent Baal Triune (as mentioned in the Bolter and Chainsword arcicle: The fortress world of Baal Triune has a long history. Small and gas enshrouded, the planet itself is dominated by wasted deserts and arid plains that once harbored a separatist, human population.) Its not an official moon, and all the details lead to "wasteland, barren, dead" for Baal and its 2-3 moons. the Ruined Land is the only other contender from Zuzzy, and it looks like it was alive at some point in its past. Despoiled looks like it was always dead, and would match up well with the flat-rock bases (I'll find the rock's name soon!) I like the textured mat that will not have things falling off it later.
Any other mat-base pairing ideas? And thanks for the responses!

Vallejo has three different ranges. The model colour is the original one designed for fantasy painting. Then they created the game colour to be a direct competitor to the GW paint line which matches their colours better and is presumably more durable.
You also have the model air which is pre-diluted painted ready for being used on the airbrush, unfortunately the colours are more adequate for military modelling so the range of colours is not so great for 40k.
