Since I did the Sniper and Hacker comparisons I thought I'd try it with something else. The Forward Observer which is used in combination with Grenade Launchers and Guided Ammo. One of the things I love about Infinity they are able to show the teamwork that goes into a force. The FO is useless if you don't also take a GL, or GML. Now what does the FO ability do?

An FO can "Mark" a target using his WIP stat instead of a shooter using his BS skill, modified by distance, camo, etc. Once a target is "marked", it lasts until the end of the active players turn. Then one of two things can be done to that target.

1. Speculative shot: the Speculative Shot Modifier is not applied.
2. Guided: Shooter will not need to roll to hit.

Guided can be particularly deadly because the WIP of the FO is usually better than the shooters BS. Also, if they target is not dead after, the shooter can shoot again.

Nomads: I'm starting with Nomads just because they are first on the Devil Team army builder. The thing to note with Nomads is that the Hacking Device Plus users also have the FO ability.

FORWARD OBSERVERS

I like the Alquacil because they are cheap, cost no SWC, comes with a deployable repeater, and have a reasonable WIP. The modifiers for FO are only at -3 32-48 in and -6 beyond that. So they are going to see most of the board if they have a good position. An Interventor is probably the best when used with a repeater.

These are the weapons for use with an FO. One thing Nomads can do is use an FO to place a Marker from which a Hacking Device Plus user can FO from that marker!

Where are the Sniper comparisons?

The other important thing to remember is that Forward Observers have a Flash Pulse. In a Link Team of high-WIP models like Hafzas this can be an incredibly effective reactive weapon...

Should I do the other factions in separate threads for do them here. I think it's better to do the separate.

@IJW: I know that Hacking Device plus users get it but can they do it through a repeater? I wouldn't think so since it says it's a shooting device. I forgot about Flash because it's not mentioned in the FO rules and they don't show it a part of their weapons.

I used some Forward Observing today, my second game. Ran a Custodier, two Light grenade launchers and another marker at 200 pts.
It turned out fairly well, managed to mark my opponents Heavy Infantry standing right next to another model of his, then proceed to rain down three grenades in a row on their heads.

I'd say that was really good.

I must say, a Moderator carrying a light GL is only 0.5 / 14... And that's really cheap considering what it does together with an FO. The ability to deny ARO is priceless.

No, you can't Flash Pulse through a Repeater, only mark or hack.
