What is your biggest wargaming related waste of money?

I haven't been into this for so long, but I've pretty recently started a CSM army. The budget of May was meant to go to a Daemon Prince and a much needed Rhino (or two). Instead, for God knows what reason, I bought a "GW Custom Army Case" (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440149a&prodId=prod1390060a). I realize now it was an unforgivably stupid purchase. At least I bought it from a discount retailer, so I didn't pay the GW price. But still...

Share with me your mistakes, so that I don't have to feel too bad about myself

I play CSM as well, and my biggest waste has been all of the heavy support choices aside from Oblit which are just proxied terminators. Second on that list would be Raptors.

shortly after the Tau first came out back in 3rd edition, I bought a whole army (2000-2500 pts) off a friend of mine for 250 bucks. Which was an excellent deal...however, at the time I was just starting college so I only had time to play maybe 2 games with them before I had to store them, and a bunch of my other stuff at my parent's house. Well, after a while they decided to clean out the room that my boxes were stashed in and they donated the whole lot to the local Goodwill.

I'm just glad I kept my orks in my car

Edit: I'm gonna eat my own previous words, if that's the correct metaphor. A later post in this thread reminded me of the quote "Time which you enjoyed wasting, was not wasted,"

I enjoyed putting my Realm of Battle board together, and I'll probably use it again, and I like the way it looks.

I'll probably end up going back and using my GKs, my Nids, my Chaos Marines, and my Tau.

And I've often considered getting more tanks and playing a Spearhead game with my Baneblade.

So none of that stuff is really wasted. I've enjoyed it in the past, and despite its current lack of use, I enjoy having it at hand in case I decide I want to play a game with it.

Did you guys know Canada has a friggin desert?

Oh god not this thread, I don't like to think about these kinds of things.

Let's see....I guess starting a dark eldar army that I never really worked much on, $150 down the drain >_>

You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O

Playing eldar...

I suppose my biggest acute regret was making SO many guardsmen with meltaguns. Back in the day, I made like 15 of them. It's been a long since I've used more than like 8 in a single game. The regret, of course, stems from the fact that the bitz cost me like $4, which puts the price tag of making 15 rather high. Had I gone for a more reasonable number of meltagunners, I could have had an extra russ or something.

I put a lot of time and effort getting Rogue Trader-era Space Marines for my Crimson Fists, and unless I'm playing a really huge game, I rarely break them out. I usually opt for my more modern models, since I did a far better job painting them and they're more consistent. I wouldn't call it a waste exactly, the old models just don't get as much usage.

The three Valkyries I bought when the newest guard codex came out. 58 bucks each (when they first came out) and I've used them in maybe 5 games. I wish I had invested in more HWS's and sentinels.

Orks. Good Lord, my poor orks. I really got into the asthetics, conversions and goofiness of my greenskins. I designed a waaagh, wrote backstory, set up a blogspot, and collected about 2500 points of them, without ever playing them. Then, one night I took them to a buddy's house to play in his garage. It was awful. What I thought was good was actually terrible. I learned that I don't have the patience to move around 120+ boys. I can't stand playing them, but still love their silliness.

on the forum. Obviously

- Lead Flayed ones. I never use them

- Lead Deff Dread. I bought it about a month before the plastic dread

- In fact, I'll just say any of the pewter things I got, with the exception of the nightbringer, my lizardmen characters and that one wraith that I got, since they all got turned into plastic kits in the end.

- I would say pariahs...but I could just make them into lords.

You don't even need to magnetize them! Just glue the two Rhino doors together and you can easily swap that and the Razorback hatch back and forth.

Better than buying a whole army for them! At least you can familiarize yourself with other armies so you'll be more prepared to fight them.

I think it is stupid to say buying an army was a waste of money because it isn't good. The fact that you don't like the feel or modelling is one thing (Always proxy or borrow armies/units first gents!). However just saying it was a waste is kind of rash. Any army can have an OK build or be fun to play. Who knows the next Codex may make those Raptors or those other units good...I wouldn't call them a waste.

You may think it's stupid, but that's your opinion. I think that i'm perfectly justified in calling my CSM army a bad purchase, because it's been sitting here collecting dust pretty much since the new codex came out. It is not 'fun' for me to play it in any sense of the word, and hasn't been since this new edition.

When you drop several hundred pounds on an army that you can no longer enjoy playing for the next 5-6 years, it does not feel like it can be anything less than a waste of money, especially since I didn't get to play enough of the 3rd edition codex to keep me interested; I simply played a bit, wrote lists, bought the army I wanted to play, and had it invalidated.

Waste.

Oohhh, I think I'll win this thread.

When I first started, I had a huge case of Army ADD. Let's go through the list, shall we?

After buying Macragge, I bought...

2 Boxes of Ork boyz and a Warboss (Extensively converted to the point where I can't use most of them, the paint was so thick the Simple Green I used couldn't fix them, and my metal Warboss broke my first set of clippers after I tried to mount him on an old Warbike. He's also unusable too, I still have every piece of him)

Then, all of a sudden, I bought

Necrons! 1 Warrior box, to be exact. Lost most of them to the bits box. (I have salvaged some of them, but I mostly paint them metal and keep them to look nice)

Finally, decided to try my hand at Warhammer Fantasy. Bought Skull Pass, and then,

Ogre Battalion and Army Book (Only got 1 game in, then I heavily converted these guys too. I don't have a single one of them left, I sold off the ones that were salvageable to my friend. To my credit, I still have the book)

Then, the Lizardmen Battalion and Army Book! (Ended up selling these to a friend, though I still have the old book too. Ahh, the memories)

Got bored, went back into 40k, and I tried my hand at Orks again. (Black Reach, a Weirdboy, and the Ork codex. These have all been sold to another friend of mine)

More recently, I bought Codex: Space Marines. (I bought a ton of models off my friend for cheap, but then sold them again to my neighbor, for his High Elves. Who I sold again)

I then finally quit my army ADD and I finally have 2 armies built to a decent standard (5,000 or so points of Dwarves and 2,000 of Chaos Space Marines. I've still got a bit of the old curse though, as I've got 1,000 points of Dark Eldar sitting around unpainted and 1,500 points of Beastmen sitting around)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.
