Ive finished this test model for my templars mounted knights. I know not everyone is a fan of space marine horses, but I think it fits in really well with the knightly feel of them.

a little bit of fluff thats still in progress.

My crusades leader is called reclusiarch Mordred, during a crusade they came across a feral planet that was recently inducted into the imperium called (something along the lines of planet rohan/planet Equunis etc ideas very welcome), where they found these tribalistic warriors that were masters of combat on horseback. They rode extermely fast and were excellent shots from their horses. The children on this planet were taught to ride and hunt as soon as they could walk. Before discovery from the imperium the people of this planet wore metal suits of armour covered in war paint. Mordred saw potential and inducted several of the young warriors into his crusade along with an elder, these warriors were given the geneseed and taught how to be space marines, but also to hone their skills on horseback from the elder. The armour of these space marines is a new variant modelled similarly to the armour they used to wear, and rather than jet black these marines wear a very dark gunmetal colour. Their helmets are painted with a white cross on the face in stead of the warpaint they used to wear. The horses they ride are hulking great beasts that have been genetically and cybernetically enhanced from horses collected on the planet.


The weapons they carry count as chainsword and bolt pistol, with the single boltpistol carried counting for the bolt pistol and twinlinked bolters of the bike due to their superior marksmanship on horseback.

i did a similar thing for my dark angel bikers using chaos knights! bet you had as much fun as i did calving all the chaos symbols off the Calvary lol
but its def a cheaper way! £25 for 3 bikers of £18 for 5 calvary! try bretonian knights next, you get like 8 for £18! though not as gothic as the chaos knights but theyll look more Templar style.

I think this works very well. He fits neatly on the steed.

Cool idea. Would be nice if the twin linked bolter were actually there somehow though... the bolt pistol mounted thing sounds like a bit of a copout

Cheers guys, I did think of trying to mount the bolters somewhere but they looked rubbish wherever I put them. If you've got any ideas I'd be happy to hear where.

I have plans for either bretonian or empire horses, mounted neophytes.....

I've just this minute found this topic and was gob-smacked when I saw it.
The reason being, I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing I've used the chaos knight legs though with a blob of green stuff between the torso and legs to keep the size proportion similar.
Other differences are that I've opted for 3 plasmaguns,
I've put a pin through the harness/gaps in the armour and mounted a bolter either side of the horse, I plan to use greenstuff to make the harness stand out more to look like the bolters are mounted onto the harness.
And I'll have a "counts as" Attack bike with a multi-melta, the way i'm thinknig of doing this is with either a terminator atop the horse holding 2 meltaguns that I've smushed together. or just use a normal marine and say he's an attack bike.

The only problem I came across was that whilst filing the chaos symbols off I noticed that one of the horses has chaos symbols around its eyes, the way i got around this was by hollowing out the head with enough space for the little shoulder shields from the terminators to fit, this way they'll act as blinders for the horse.

Cheers, tbh I stole the idea from a thread i saw on bolter and chainsaw lol at the moment Ive just green stuffed those symbols, might try and GS some eye dealies much like the horse head above, we shall see. Im quite happy just to say theyre epic shots lol i wasnt a fan of how bulky it made the horse look.

as for attack bike. im thinking attack chariot if i can get hold of two side cars to piece together lol

A very nice touch to the Knighthood of the Black Templars.

Whilst this is a sound concept, both the legs and Neddy still come off as looking still a little too "chaos-y". You need to get rid of the arrows on the chains that are hanging over the chainmail on the legs (possibly resculpt them into Templar crosses or something. Although from a personal standpoint I would have simply used some power armoured legs and made them fit) and lose some of the spikes and also change the blade of the weapon, possibly to one of the power swords from the BT sprue. Doing this will go a long way to making it look a hell of a lot nicer and little less coming across as a little "half arsed", even if it isn't.

i know there is only one rider but the sheer size is equal to a attack bike.

one the one chaos horse head you mentioned regarding the chaotic symbols around its eye, i finely scraped off a bit of plastic from the pru so it bacame curved and did like you did made eye guards. it was only by accident i did this. otherwise i dont know how id solve the problem as im not good enough with greenstuff to remodel an animals eye

Those are very nice conversions! I like the Knightly feel of the Black Templar and knights

It came out pretty nice, I like the idea.
I've seen plenty of folks over the years do Templars on Warhorses, Salamanders on Cold Ones. I think this is the cleaner match with the newer Warhorse as the horse is beefer.

You really need to consider some how getting the TL Bolter in there. You could even have the model holding the Bolter as it would be fine. Other options are building a harness type around the head of the horse

The concept works in my opinion. The legs could look a bit more like power armour, but that's just a minor complaint.

That's an awesome concept. But a agree with Enzephalon in that the horse needs to be teched up a bit. Simple stuff like having one of the legs or hooves as a mechanical leg/hoof.

Other then that. OMG that a great model you have. I'm tempted to start doing models like that for my bike squads.

Ok, Ill have a go at teching up the horses a bit, maybe some wires and I can give it a go at making a bionic leg.

Ill see what I can do about armouring up the legs abit.

Something similar to the legs on the thunder wolves perhaps? I wouldn't change this one though. Do the cyborg stuff on the next one.

Yea I wont be touching this one, this is done now in my eyes.

How about this as a step in the right direction, still needs some cleaning up, and the horse needs some work too but thoughts please.

You have boo boos on your fingers. I really like the first pics. It looks gothic. I agree also with removing the chaos arrows etc but only things that are specific chaos icons.

tbf I had removed all the chaos symbols from the horse itself and annoyingly forgotten the actual riders legs, hence the booboos lol lesson learned I guess

OK, that's really cool . . . never thought of combining eras like this. Not my style for an army but conversions and painting different types of models are my thing! Great idea - thanks for sharing! Mike

Well I also want to do the same thing but as TWC cavalry and not as bikers. If only other marine codices have real cavalry so that I on't be accused of just wanting to powergame... I WANT CAVALRY FOR MY MEDIEVAL KNIGHT-THEMED ARMY DANGNABBIT!

For the twin linked bolt why dont you just give the rider a stormbolter? Its a very close counts-as and seems a more logical choice than trying to mount bolters on the horse somehow.

Ive looked at your army before, liking your work. It only makes sense that space knights should get horses!!

that had never crossed my mind, genious!! think thats gonna have to be what I use from now on. Ill try and get some of the GK wrist mounted ones

I love 'em! If you take on board some of the advice offered by others, this unit's going to look amazing.

going to start painting the rest tonight, Im unsure whether to do that brushed silver over black paint job for every unit, (not just the horsemen) or stick to plain black for my normal initiates. Thoughts please?
