Subject: Elementary, my dear Lucy Liu - CBS is doing their own version of a modern Sherlock Holmes
ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare – a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he’s devised his own post-rehab regimen – resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock’s police contact, Capt. Tobias “Toby” Gregson (Aidan Quinn), knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crimes, it’s simple deduction that he’s going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it’s elementary that it’s a job for Watson. Rob Doherty (ITV's "Headcases"), Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Cuesta, who directed the pilot, are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.
I admit, a female Asian Dr. Watson is an interesting idea, but the rest... How shamelessly out of ideas can you be, to take the concept of a modern Sherlock Holmes, which is still pretty new at this point, and then put him into New York? You might as well send him to the future.

As well they shouldn't. The latest BBC reboot was/is brilliant. The US one has an odor about it...
Well IIRC they were considering suing over it...

This just screams 'touchy-feely' American rubbish. All this talk about re-hab and Watson keeping Holmes 'grounded'... Ugh. I bet there's talk of him 'hitting bottom' and trying to remain 'centered', and other such nonsensical psychobabble.
I couldn't get into the other revival series, but maybe with Lucy Liu.

And, I would bet a great deal of money that this won't be a patch on the more recent BBC series. But, then that was probably the best TV series I have watched over the past couple of years!
A few years back the BBC did a one off comedy drama called " Cruise of the Gods" , it dealt with a fan convention for a ( fictional) old, obscure and cancelled sci fi show " The Children of Castor ". Steve Coogan played the lead character who was pretty much the only one who still had a career.
He worked in America on a show called " Sherlock Holmes in Miami ", which was proposed as it was clearly a ludicrous idea indeed. How far we've come.
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Whatever happened to stiff upper lip?
And Johnny Lee Miller was great in Trainspotting. Everything else... Meh.

This sounds like a typically awful American adaptation. For some reason in the UK we just buy American shows, the Americans don't do this and prefer to remake, and there are numerous terrible examples. Thinking that making John Watson a woman is such a basic attempt at a 'modern twist' that's it's laughable. Can you imagine the meetings where this was discussed? "Oh we've got an idea, big idea, it's Sherlock Holmes, in New York, and here's the twist, Watson is a woman!".
If they make this and avoid creating a load of 'sexual tension' between Watson and Sherlock I'll be amazed. It's pretty much the reason for having a male and female lead. It's what all series do, like Castle, it'll be X-Files without the flying saucers. Yawn.

@reds8n thats a pretty good cast for Curse of Gods. Coogan, Brydon, Corden and Walliams would cost a fortune to get together these days. I especially like Brydon for Human Remains, one of the darkest comedies ever made.

$20 they either shack up at some point in the show or it'll be on of those 'past mistakes'
Looking at the premise, America has outdone their own stupidity this time around (which is saying something).

Yes, it has The Mentalist, which is one the best shows of all time.
You should just watch the Pilot of it, I bet you'll get hooked.
I'll give this show a shot. I tend like my investigative shows, and since Fox cancelled the Finder after one season AND House is ending, I have a void to fill...

It helps when you only make 3 shows a year. That being said I agree it doesn't seem to stand up to the Cumberbatch/Martin series. Of course the target audience for this show seems to be the CSI/NCIS/Mentalist fans, not traditionalist Sherlock fans, or fans of quality TV writing.

I don't know, the first couple seasons of Fringe that I've seen has given me hopes that we can make a show with a male and female lead that doesn't revolve around sexual tension between the two. Plus - Lucy Liu, dude. Dude. Anyways the American adaptation of Fawlty Towers was waaaay better

But the bbc one was excellent, had lots of wry little allusions to the books, wasn't cheesy at all, well cast, well written. All round one of, if not, the best thing on over the past two years.

Well it was 3 hour long (and actual hour, none of your american 40something minutes, no adverts on the beeb) episodes. Series over here are usually 6 x 30 minutes so its pretty much a series.

It sounds about as bad as the movie versions of "Mission Impossible" are compared to the series.
I think I"ll give it a miss and stick to the BBC version.
