I would like to start off with, I hope this is the correct forum.
I was watching Blazing Saddles of ye old and I noticed the SoB insiginia.
It's in the scene with the dancing german, her screen has the SoB insiginia.
Did they copy this or is it from history?

The developers at GW were huge fans of Blazing Saddles, developed the Sisters' logo as an homage to Lili von Schtupp, and the symbol has existed ever since...

Yeah they invented the Inquisition, the Crusades, the Lasgun, Tanks, and the Emperor as well. GW is inspired by a great deal of things, both of fiction and of fact, which makes it that much better of a universe to play in because there is always something, someone can relate to... if only we had more women sympathetic to the idea of senseless bloodshed and grimdarkness to enjoy the the fleur de lis as much as the rest of us. (I've got to admit, its an awesome symbol).

That's funny, I never looked at it like that. Trust me, the origin behind my avatar is far geekier than some old french nonsense.

To clarify, the fleur- de-lys is the emblem of the kings of France; its presence of the royal arms of England dates to the claim (through his mother, sister to Charles IV of France, who died without issue) to the throne of France by Edward III of England, and its disappearance from the arms to George III's formal cessation of that claim in 1801 (which had by then become wholly nominal, since the claim had not been militarily pressed in two centuries, and France had, in any case, since become a republic). It should be noted also that the claim to be rightful kings of France (which comprised only the area immediately surrounding Paris) was entirely separate from the English monarchy's other possessions in what is now France, which were their inheritance as dukes of Normandy, Brittany, Aquitaine, etc.

I was commenting more on the whole "OMG, I saw the SoB symbol in a movie, was it inspired by GW?" post at the beginning of this thread, and by looking at the flag of the OP I was simply questioning how somebody could live in England and never have come in contact with that symbol.
That was the main point of my post really. Although I have it on good authority that the Duke of Bavaria is the true king of England.

Fleur de lys used to be a symbol of French royalty, if I recall correctly. This is entirely speculation, but I suspect it was used in order to play up the Joan of Arc-like thematic nature of the Sisters of Battle.
No, Mel Brooks has probably never touched 40k in his life. Though if he made a 40k parody movie it would be the most hilarious thing ever.

It may be shocking to all of us knowledgeable people that someone can live in England and not know the symbol, but cut the guy some slack. There are lots and lots of cultures within our culture and not everyone can know everything nowadays. And he asked. Asking is the best thing people can do, and telling them they were stupid when they asked something is always the wrong answer, no matter how shocking the lack of knowledge behind the question may seem; after all, it is to remedy this lack that he is asking in the first place.

And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions. |
