I am having trouble with a local player, everything I try to use against him seems to annoy him allot.
He seems to hate when I use:
Mindshackle scarabs
Imotekh
Scarabs
and the new one after the last game - Doomscythes
Every list I try to make that has a way to take down land raiders with any amount of reliability. He hates Imotekh because it makes it hard for him to destroy my vehicles with las cannons the first few turns, and last game his lightning went off stupidly well and decimated his side of the field. He hates the Mindhsackle scarabs because his berserkers can't run through my squads. he hates scarabs because they permanently lower the armour of his land raiders. He hates the doomscythe now because it is a line attack that went through his 2 daemon princes and a land raider and wounded one and wrecked the land raider.
I just don't know what to do, every single thing I try to field that can somewhat reliably hurt his land raiders makes him mad. Unfortunatly playing with someone else instead isn't really and option as I live in a small town and there are very few 40k players around.
Blood for the bloo... wait no, I meant for Sanguinius!
Make your next Necron list be entirely Warriors with the Time-Travel guy, don't roll for his The Stars Are Right special rule and dont bring a monolith or any vehicles.
Yes, you are throwing this game. If he can't beat this list, then he's a terrible player and there's no help for him.
Once he wins a few games, slowly start bringing your bigger guns back until you strike some sort of equitable balance.
It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
Ma55ter_fett wrote:So you win lots and that makes him mad huh?
Actually I almost always lose the games against him, it took me over a year of playing to actually beat him for the first time. Admittedly the list I fielded did have almost everything on his list of things he hates. He has played his army since 4th edition and knows what he likes to field and how to use them.

He seems to be a jerk. There is a counter to any list and if he isn't a good enough player...tough. Either he can man up and try to win without complaining....or play someone better.

Either
1. Hit him with a wrench, bite his ankles, and pee on him old school wiener dog style.
2. Politely don't play Sir Douche A Lot any more.
Frazzled recommends "1"

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Unfortunately he is probably the best player in the area, and about the only one I can reliably get a game with. His list usually takes some effort and allot of luck to kill.
He usually fields(at about 1850):
2 Land raiders full of berserkers
either 1 squad of obliteraters or a defiler
2 Daemon Princes
3 squads of termies with autocanons
1 Dreadnaught
The big problem I've run into is if I stay away from models that he doesn't like me fielding his land raiders and berserkers are nearly invincible. I feel bad for fielding the units but withought any way to crack a land raider and hurt the berserkers it isn't worth playing the game because I will be guaranteed to lose. I'm trying to come up with a list that has a chance but wont make him leave the table turn one.

What, seriously?
He wins these battles and is critting on the Butthurtedness Table?
Sounds to me like you are playing the worst kind of TFG, who not only wants to win, but wants to win easily. He has tunnel-vision regarding what he thinks are "superunits" and cannot fathom that something out there exists that spanks his superunits. That's why he's butthurt over the Necrons, who bring a lot of anti-vehicle wargear to the table.
Screw this guy, he needs either man-up or bring more Kleenex.
It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
Make your lists cheesy and beat him like he owes you money.
That's what I try to avoid but unfortunately if I don't field something to crack a land raider(and I have) he rolls over me and wipes me off the table quickly. I've made lists with no heavy support units and it still makes him angry, I would love to find a way to fight berserkers and have a chance without having to rely on lords with a warscythe and mindshackle scarabs but havent been able to yet.

Seriously, play what you want. Destroy his units and army. Make him have to adapt and get better. It's a game where you play what you like and bring untis to handle situations that might arise during the game. If he can't handle that with maturity, he isn't really worth playing with or really even associating with.
What he's asking now would be like an NFL team saying "I don't like it when you bring Drew Brees. He's too tough to play against. Can you leave him on the bench so that I can beat you? While you're at it, can you go ahead and leave all the rest of your starting players home as well?"
Clthomps wrote:Have him make your list and you can make his. Its always a lot of fun.
I might do something like that some day (with limitations regarding what models everyone has). Does seem like it would be interestinf, if somewhat confusing with 2 probably second or third rate armies.

Why do you care so much if he gets angry?
Either bring a list with all the lovely necron cheese and win and have fun, or don't play against him.
Why would you put up with a total hole just to play a game of 40K? Play with someone else! If he really is the only player around then shelve your models and pick up a different hobby because it just isn’t worth it.
The main reason I care if he gets angry is he is also one of my roommates(and coworker) so eventually he will want to play again and I don't want to feel like a jerk after every game(plus a 1 round game is really boring).
I may consider the shelving them for now, I'll graduate from college in a year or so and will probably be moving to a city with a larger player base, the town I live in now only has about 6,600 people during the school year and less during the summer.

Ah...
Yea, concentrate on the studies for now the last year is pretty darn important.

Absolutely.
AvengingKnee, *you* need to grow a pair. Quit worrying about making him mad. He's poor sport to get mad *when* he still beats you.
Watch season 4 of the Sopranos, all in one day, and then go play him, and don't give a **** how he feels. Don't go for his anger, go for his crying and sadness. Taunt and gloat about Enrtopic Strike until he cries. Oh, proxy 9 spiders so you can field 20+ scarabs. You know, scarab farm.
And then, remind him, it's plastic spacemen.

Crush him so entirely that Abbadon the Destroyer feels bad for him. I would rather travel to play you than have him continuously wallow in his sorrow for thinking his one army beat everything in GW's catalogue. This game is about fun, if you're not having fun playing him and he's not having fun playing you, you may want to try and find another person to play if you can.

You say he plays chaos right? Make this object stay near his land raiders for as long as possible.
He does but the thing always faces so it cannot see his land raiders, he learned that the hard way one game when it shot his land raider with a las cannon, then the next turn proceeded to charge it and beat it to death with its Str 10 attacks, but it does leave a decent chunk of the battlefield where land raiders fear to tread.

It seems like this guy gets mad when you use basically all the really good things in your codex. I could see getting frustrated playing a total tourney list all the time, but from the sounds of it, that's not at all the case. Have you tried asking what it is he hates about the units? Maybe try having a reasonable discussion with him. Ask him why her hates your units, and explain to him why you take them. If its just that he has something against the 'crons, (or you) then there's nothing you can do to make him happy. Just wait till you're able to play someone who's a better sport.
Yeah, he's pretty much a TFG. If he tells you he doesn't like things in your army, tell him you'll gladly take them out if he does the same with things you don't like-tell him you hate Daemon Princes, Obliterators, and all forms of Land Raiders. If he tells you that it's ridiculous, agree with him and tell him you won't be taking out anything either. Then tell him to grow up and stop acting 5. If this doesn't work, I second Frazzled's idea of peeing on him. Or get a rabid squirrel to chew his face off. Either one seems appropriate.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

This guy has no concept of Rules. IF you do things by the rules, you are fine. Yeah, you bring cheese, So what, If you want an army that you like feth him.
Now if he is your only play option maybe remove one of those. Both sense i think winning all the time is boring(something i know nothing about) and because the more you win the less he would want to play against ya.
Tell him you'll stop taking scarabs/imotekh/whatever, if he stops taking landraiders. That's an obviously fair proposition. Explain to him that the only reason you're taking those units is because of his landraiders, and that you'd like a chance to win occasionally. Seriously, if that doesn't work, you must be buying your 40k stuff from somewhere, a hobby shop or whatever.. Hang around up there and try to make some new friends.
He just sounds like your run of the mill berzerker spam fool. The kind that can't make his own list or understand his own codex.
If I were him, first I wouldn't run berzerkers. But if I had to, I would give all my squads icons or personal icons and toss in 4-6 obliterators in deep strike, normally in groups of 2. Then I just move towards you and when the reserves come in they deal with any problems, and the berzerkers mop things up.

tell him to stop whining and grow a pair. every codex has stuff thats kinda crazy, and if he cant learn to deal, then he should STFU and GTFO. its not your job to allow him to win, or take units he can deal with and avoid ones he dosent like. if hes gonna piss and moan, then i would give him one more game to "man up" and after that jus dont even bother unpacking your models and say "congrats good game you win" and go on to your next match. - unless its a tourney THEN GRIND HIM TO DUST!!!!
and the "haters gon hate" thing above is 110% acurate.
