I'm contemplating picking it up at some point, but it has little to do with the GW price hike. I just like me some nice models and I've heard good things about the rules.

Army scale is the term correctly or incorrectly used to describe games where the rules have you moving and shooting units as a whole instead of individual models within a unit. People have suggested that the more accurate term for this be platoon or battalion scale game, but really it comes from the fact that Warhammer 40K called its forces 'armies' and has just stuck since then.

So something like Warmahordes still falls under being a skirmish game because although you have units, you're still resolving the shooting/combat action of each model essentially one at a time.

But with something like Dust or 40K, you have rules for units and although the individual models within the unit change the unit's capabilities in most cases you're worried about the status of the unit as opposed to the status of the model.

I think Dust Warfare looks like a great rules-set and I would totally play it were it not for the fact that WW2 games, even those set in bizarro realities with giant walkers, just don't capture my imagination very much.

PDF book? Legit download or... piracy? Cuz' really with a real book that would be about the same cost as a GW starter.

Anyway, wouldn't this have been better posted in the already ongoing GW price increase whining thread?

Three factions for now, the Axis, Allies and the communists. There has been some talk that the number of factions will rise in future.

Yep, only 3 factions as of now (and they only just released the third one).

However the designer on the D6G podcast did say they were hoping to expand the game the way that miniature games traditionally do (i.e. add more factions at some point). Whether or not that actually happens or exactly how that happens is anyone's guess.

The rulebook sets the game up as only having 3 factions in the fluff, although it seems like if they wanted they could split some of those factions into two and that's kind of hinted at in the way the fluff is presented.

So in the fluff despite 'the Allies' being a single faction they highlight the US, UK, France & Brazil separately within that faction. Whereas the Axis highlights Germany, Japan & Italy separately within their single faction.

The SSU (Sino-Soviet Union) doesn't have any specific countries highlighted within the faction in the rulebook, but I'd imagine the SSU expansion book does.

So whether they go crazy and add in like an alien faction or they just start splitting their main factions into smaller ones, it seems like they do have some room to grow within the existing framework presented.

Its a great game. The rules are fairly tight and balanced, but also very easy to pick up. Forces are reasonably inexpensive.

Theres only three factions so far, but the list building rules are lax enough that you can build quite themed lists.

Axis are slower, more resilient, and put out lower volume but higher strength fire power. They can take more vehicles, but they have limited fire arcs. And the can take zombies. or gorillas.
Allies are fast, have higher anti-light-infantry firepower, and have jetpacks on all heavy infantry and medium walkers (yes, thats right, a walking tank with jetpack).

There is obvious room for expansion with separate Japanese, Brazilian, Australian units. There is already a 'red berets' unit for the brits.

I highly recommend it.

I got the rulebook yesterday, and yes I did decide not to buy anymore GW models just finish off painting what I have and trade a few things. This choice is mostly because I am really interested in Dust Warfare although the GW price hike does make the decision easier.

I am lucky I didn't sell the original Dust Tactics core set I had sitting around for a long time too. It has a lot of troops and some walkers in it for both Axis and Allies.

It also looks like a cheap game to get into here in AUS. The Heavy Walker is $44 assembled and ready to go while something like a Land Raider is $110, which is likely to be bumped up in price soon?

Wargames aren't comparable like that, lord_blackfang.

I got Dust Tactics maybe half a year ago 'cause we sell the basic box in our store and it looked interesting. I also picked up Iron Tide at the same time, though I haven't opened the latter.

Compared to GW, Dust Tactics play quick. Set up is also smaller. Start to finish my second game played took about 30 minutes, not including set up. It's absolutely brutal and it's fun. The models are also really great, to the point where I'd only stick some Devlan Mud or other brown/black-ish wash on them to give more depth.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

The premise that we should immediately buy into something new is silly, that's all. I have a dozen GW armies, what's my motivation to spend more money on something else just because the stuff I already have is going up in price?

If the question were "What will you spend your hobby money on in the future?" that would be a different matter.

My main motivation for collecting dust tactics relies on the fact that i first and foremost am a converter, if a kit is relatively "cheap" the chances it turning up on my workbench/gaming table is greatly increased, Dust tactics has alot of walkers. with little mods you could have a scratchbuilt/converted "mech" based IG army. on the subject of price increase at GW....today it seems there was a slight decrease in cost of certain boxed sets. i wouldn't believed it myself but GW website updated prices while i was browsing their website today....for how long is anyones guess.

Yes the prices arent bad which is one reason I was willing to invest in a collection of SSU models. I still have some concerns about some of the rules and game design choices ( and the long term viability of the game), but if the game tanks or Isnt good, I can find plentyof uses for the models, especially the choppers (proxy balks or ork flyers with some converting).

I also fail to see what rising prices has to do with playing another game. I don't *need* to buy more models to play 40k or fantasy but I would need to buy more models to play Dust Tactics

Granted, new models are expensive but the price of the game has very little to do with if you enjoy playing it or not

I think the point if a bit indirect is what are people going to buy to feed their Sci-Fi wargames miniatures collecting habit?

Are there tournaments or plans for such for Dust Tactics or Warfare?

The D6 podcast has me sold. I'll be purchasing some of the sets when I get back homes.

I was out after the cash and burn from last year.

Along with my moving expenses, I have given up buying GW's stuff, aside from Necromunda, or the occasional thing to trade someone else for.

Last time they pulled the "Finestuff/ pricehike/ remove al metals, I was mad as a mad dog. NOW? I just gave them up as serious as a gaming company. Now all they are doing is riding the name into the ground, and grabbing as much cash as they can before the inevitable bubble bursting.

THIS time, I can honestly say they have pushed the envelope past the point of serious gaming company.

Thier older games were where the fun was. THIS stuff they are shilling now is not even seriously worth looking at for buying.

QFT Rising prices doesn't mean everyone should flip their gak and run out to buy some other game. I'm actually not put out with the high prices; it means I'll buy fewer kits but spend more time painting and converting them. It also means I won't have as much gak that I never use filling up my apartment. I enjoy playing 40k. And despite what everyone claims, GW prices haven't gone "through the roof." I started playing 13 years ago, and a landraider cost 50$. A 16-25 dollar increase (or whatever) isn't that surprising.

I didn't buy it because of GW, been into Dust Tactics/Warfare since before D6G made it cool

I had the original DT core set, but after their raving review, I picked up the DW rulebook and revised starter at my FLGS. I had some Amazon credit to burn, so I ordered the 1 of each heavy walker and just got em the other day.

So, now I have a pretty nice sized & even army for both Axis and Allies, but currently no one around to play with :(

I have played several games of Dust Warfare. It will not replace 40k for me. The lack of assembling models and fact there is no customizing units is a big thumbs down for me.
It will replace my War Machine army as I will not have to spend tons of time on it.

Unfortunately the rules are not as "tight" as everyone says. Scenarios need to be faq'd as they are very poorly written.

Their also seems to be a flaw in the game mechanics in reguards to going first. If you go first, you get your 2 actions per unit and you get to react to the enemy, giving you a potential 3 actions. Going second you will only ever get 2 actions or one reaction and one action. This has played a huge role in our games. More play testing is needed to see if it causes the game to be unfair to the person going second.

I have seen Demos and podcasts, and I will fully admit it probably has a great ruleset and is a superior game. But I am with Yakface, WW2 and alternate Universe WW2 does nothing for me. They are simply models I want nothing to do with. Most historicals do nothing for me. Same reason warmahordes does nothing for me as the models simply don't appeal to me.

If I want 'superior gameplay' and balanced rules which are fun, I will break out blood bowl which I can get pretty much anyone to play as I own like 12 teams. Otherwise, I will stick with the ruleset which supports the models I enjoy modeling which currently is a 40k based system.
