Hey dakka, I'm really tempted to grab the assault on black reach set but with the rumors of 6th edition coming out in a few months I'm not sure if I should wait to get whatever box set that comes out for 6th edition or what . Thanks in advance!

Hello there! This is a tough one as we are all in limbo until we find out. What I'd suggest is to wait a couple of weeks and see what happens news wise. On the other hand, Black reach is a really good starter set with really good models. Yes you get an old rule book but if you are getting into 40k you'll soon get the bug to buy more! There will be a new starter set sometime after the new rulebook is released; it all depends if you want to wait for it or get Black Reach solely for the models. Last but not least the rulebook will give you an idea what you are getting into.

Thanks Slipstream, for the input. I've already got "the bug" . I've been painting 40k minis for years now I just haven't actually played 40k yet .

Yeah, I would wait seeing as 6th ed is expected in the next month or two.

Yeah i would agree, i am thinking that it will come out in july, (like fantasy did) and they will bring out a starter set, probably with space marines in it

The question is:

Do you want to play Space Marines or Orks ?

Then grab the Black Reach box before its gone. Its a good bargain, even if you have to sell 50% of the box and dump the rulebook.

If not it might be better to wait.

I'm looking to start Space wolves actually. I'm not too keen on orks though. And although I could buy black reach then turn around and sell the all the orks, I'm curious to find out what army will be in the 6th edition box opposite of the space marines. They've already done nids and orks so whats next? Maybe Eldar?

The current rumor is Dark Angels versus Chaos (with cultists), but who can say. If 6th edition comes out in July, then the new starter set would likely come out in September (following recent trends).

The models will still be good, however, so if you're looking to get AoBR for the models, templates, and a handful of dice it wouldn't be a bad buy if it's from a discounted retailer like Warstore.

Exactly. If you're looking to get into 40k, now is literally the time to start, given that we're literally on the eve of a price hike. It's going to take you at least a couple of months to get your basic army painted, and by that time, 6th ed will already be out, so waiting isn't going to help much.

Of course, AoBR is sort of a questionable buy now, given that you're paying in part for a soon-to-be-dated rulebook, but you get SO MUCH other stuff in that set, that it's still probably worth it for a new player - assuming that you want to play marines or orks.

In any case, start your army now. As SRM says, the minis will still be good (it's not like 6th ed is going to get rid of marines with bolt guns...), and the core of your army in 5th ed is very, very, very likely to be the core of your army in 6th. Two solid troops choices and a supporting HQ are going to be mandatory in the next edition, and by the time you're done buying and painting these up, 6th ed will be out and you'll know where to expand from there.

If you know what army you want I suggest you start collecting the basics and wait for the rulebook. For example, if you want to collect marines (and you know you want to, if you are unsure don't jump head first) you might want to buy a few tactical squads and a commander/command squad, the basics that you will probably need and still find useful no matter the changes. If you finish buying, assembling, and painting those before 6th ed. comes out you might want to buy some more stuff while airing on the side of caution, perhaps some terminators or sternguard which will likely still be useful. So in the end you can get a head start while not wasting much or any money.

Yeah, as Ailaros says, start your army now (but to add to it) Only if you're committed and love it for what it is (lore wise and general playstyle), not for what you think / fear it may /might become in 6th edition because even if it does end up changing, more than likely it won't be much on a grand scale.

Perhaps it would be best to get Black Reach now if you want Space Marines and expand your collection with the new starter set once it comes out.

AOBR is a great box set, if you want to play SM or Orks. Its real cheap for what you get, plus the rules will let you kind of familiarize yourself before 6th. The models in there arnt going to be going anywhere in 6th most likely, as they are base models in the armies currently, so I would guess they would still be useful in 6th.

Space Marines haven't changed fundamentally for 25 years, lol. The models in that set, if you plan to play Orks or Space Marines, will almost undoubtedly remain usable.

Now, whether or not the models in the next release are "cooler" and you have buyer's remorse is a different story. But there's unlikely to be an Ork or Space Marine army that can't use Terminators, Tactical Marines, Dreadnoughts, Boyz, etc.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
