This was a last minute quicky that I painted up a couple of nights ago for the DarkSword painting comp over in the Wamp forum.

Cersei Lannister from George RR Martin' s masterworks collection was a perfect excuse to try out sheer fabric fx and some marbling, and the competition is being judged by the man himself! Apparently he's a big fan of minis and I feel quite humbled that he will be casting his critical eye over the entries.

Oh, and on the highly likely chance that some of you have been watching Game of Thrones, please no spoilers as i'm only up the the end of season one so far! I do hope to get the audio books as that will allow me to carry on the story while my eyes are occupied with painting.

Thanks for looking.

hehe Thanks man! I wouldn't feel too bad though... there's some really good entries in there, including some from painters like Ana from Chest of Colours!

Orki, everything you do is the cutting edge of amazing. The sheer fabric effects are nothing short of bonerific. I wish I had half your talent brother. The marbling, too is amazing, but I have to say that I am most impressed by the flowers. They look almost photo-realistic. I especially like how you altered your painting style for the portrait to make it more portrait-y.

That's fantastic. I looked at the pictures before I read the post, and assumed the column was real marble. Truly remarkable. (Big Game of Thrones fan here!)

I love it! I discovered the GoT models on the Dark Sword site a while ago and have it bookmarked... Unfortunately my skills are no-where near good enough to do them justice.

You, on the other hand, clearly can Awesome work! Do you have plans for any more?

Yeah, it was a quite fun kinda mottling it all to look a bit more like an oil painting. I just jabbed away at it when painting the highlights and shades instead of drawing, pushing and swiping as per usual.

They are from some little weeds that one of my neighbours had growing at the end of their driveway. I tend to scour vegetation for interesting plants and stuff while i'm walking around. It's kinda like charity shop bargain hunting, but even cheaper!

Quite possibly, though my personal time is stretched rather thin at the mo with commissions spilling over into it from my day. If you google for "miniature painting sheer effect" you should find a tute though. I'm certainly not the first one to do it.

My favourite sheer mini is actually another cersei painted by the incredible mrika, which iirc GRRM has in his personal collection.

Oh actually! If you go to the Wamp forum http://www.wamp-forum.com/VB4/forum.php and click the 'Portal' magazine tab at the top right, you will see that the latest issue has a sheer painting tutorial by Maya Morland. Purely coincidental that it is in this months issue though, I haven't actually read the article. She's a decent painter though so i'm sure the article will be of help to anyone wishing to give it a go.

If Cersei is anything to go by, then yes! She is one of the finest sculpts i've had the pleasure of painting, and tbh I wish I could've spent a few more nights doing her qualities justice. I would love to paint up some more from the range!

Absolutely amazing. I've been enjoying the HBO series, the books, and the audio books for some time now. You're painting definitely does the subject matter justice. I suspected that Martin might be a fan of miniatures and/or tabletop gaming and considered he probably had a lot of influence with the intro to the show (I watch it every time I see an episode).

You have my gratitude for sharing the information about Portal too, it looks like a fantastic resource.

Absolutely superb work. I'm a bit surprised the portrait of the king is still intact and not hidden behind the flowers, but the artwork is exquisite!

No probs. It's a good read, and well worth downloading the back issues. I'm keep getting prodded into doing articles for it but so far haven't found the time to type up my orky know-whats.

Flinty wrote:Absolutely superb work. I'm a bit surprised the portrait of the king is still intact and not hidden behind the flowers, but the artwork is exquisite!

Good observation, and one that I initially wanted, but the composition didn't quite work as well as it forced me to use the floor space in a particular way. That the portrait is no longer hanging anywhere still gets the message across, and being where it is allowed for some better angles.

Cool! Does it have nice big choccy chunks in it?

Jimsolo wrote:When will the judging be done? I'd like to know if this wins.

The entries have now all been sent to DarkSword, and when Mr Martin has made his decision we will find out I guess. I really have no idea how long that will take. Could be tomorrow, could be weeks away! I'll be sure to let you guys know how the comp goes anyway, or of course you could always sign up to the forum.

Your work is allways cutting edge and never fails to amaze.
The marble is simply amazing, did you work from a picture for that? or do you simply have a tecnique for it?

Also, thats the 1st time ive ever seen or even heard of the idea of painting a transparent material.
Usually the closest you will see is vials of liquid or containers, but clothes that give the image of being see through, simply bloody amazing!

Best of luck with the competition

Thanks guys.

Jackal - The Marble technique is a bit of both really. There are some methods that breed the resultant effect, but I chose some of the same colours as Cersei to tie the base in with her, and there wasn't any reference as such.

A few weeks ago I did happen to look at marble textures for another project though, and after watching some episodes set in Kings Landing I decided that marble would be an ideal choice for the base and just kinda whipped it up really.
