First of all-I love Apothecaries. And, being a marine player (with FW goodies) I cannot get enough of them. I was quite happy when I found Shen, the Master Apothecary for the Salamanders. Just wondering of he is a legit HQ ( tournament alloud) and if anyone would suggest using him in a small army, around 1k? Thanks!

If the tournament allows FW then yeah its fine. But apparently most places don't allow FW units, so you should just make sure you ask ahead of time and just hope.

I don't know his rules, so I can't help with the 1k army usefulness of the character

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Valid comments above, check with your local tourny about allowing FW units.

I believe he's reasonably priced for an HQ, I could see him doing well even at a small scale game, although a Libby will usually be more useful.

Well, considering he has no invulnerable save I would ideally stick him in a termie squad, but that might be tough to do at the 1000pts scale.

You could do a vanguard squad and throw some storm shields in there.

I don't think he is a very good hq, at least, when he is the only HQ. I mean, he only has 2 wounds, no invo save, only I4, WS 5 means that in close combat hes screwed. Even against shooting, one round of rapid fire bolters into his unit could spell the end for him.

Having said that, he does have a 2+ armor save and a nifty special rule you might be able to use to shift a PF hit onto another model, which might keep him alive another round. His other ability, re-rolling ones on FNP tests, is worth an extra 8.33% saved wounds. The points cost isn't outrageous for what you get (by Marine HQ standards, at any rate), and so he might make a decent second HQ choice once you cover your librarian or biker captain.

As far as deployment, he'd probably do best in something medium-large and valuable, like a Sternguard or Terminator squad.
