The other day I introduced my 10 year old brother into the 40k scene as I did it when I was his age,
So I did what any good bro would do and bought him Black Reach starter Kit,
He wants a Dark looking SM so we are stuck with either Black Templar's, Or Blood Angels or does anyone else have any suggestions?
Also The pack supplies Ultra Marines, Do they have to be ultra marines or could I choose a different chapter?
Sorry for the question but to be honest this trip down my childhood has refilled my love for 40k Thanks guys
Neal

None of the SM models in AoBR have any hard chapter markings. The pictures you see are the models with water transfers, so you can paint the Marines as any chapter you like.

And you title foe this topic is a little odd. Might try being a bit clearer as to what you are asking up front to attract more answers.

Also welcome to Dakka Dakka.

I think you mean Space Marines and not Storm Troopers.

You got a few replies in your other thread, but I'll repeat my answer here:

There is nothing Ultramarinish about the space marines in the Starter Box other than how they are painted on the cover and in the book. Paint them how you want.

I used mine for Black Templars. Why don't the two of you flip through Lexicanum's Loyalist Space Marines List and look at a variety of Space Marines. You can read a little of each chapter and pick out a color scheme that you'd like. Or, just use them for inspiration and come up with your own chapter.

Have fun!

Make up his own chapter. he can use the BA codex, the BT codex, the DA codex, or the Vanilla codex for all of those models.

Now tactical marines arn't the best for the BTs, BAs, or the DAs but thats a moot point.

It's best sticking with SMs for the AoBR, to be honest. None of the units are optimal for any other armies (Maybe SW, but whatever) You can quite easily lever yourself into a different codex with your SM models.

Raven guard are a very dark SM army, it's basically like playing batman.

If you mean dark as in color, then Iron hands are 95% black colored.

There's quite a few others, and with the new SM codex coming in a few months I can't suggest picking anything up but that one for what he want's to do, unless a death company army (BA) is what he wants.

Crimson Fists are dark too... You'd be if you destroyed your homeworld...

They didn't destroy their own home world. They lost their fortress monestary and a great portion of their chapter when their mega-missile launcher (shoots down big ships) malfunctioned, making the defense of their home world "rather difficult" during the Ork invasion.

Fine... It still did quite a bit of damage...

I generally don't consider accidents really dark. Depressing perhaps, but not dark.

Brought back good memories, Just read up on Raven Guard, Dark in color (which is great as my painting skill is very poor but i'm practicing) and I like the stealth side of them.

I play Black Templars, Crimson Fists, and Orks. I've been playing since 5th edition came out. I started with the Assault on Black Reach, a Space Marine Battle Force Box, and the Black templar upgrade box.

Probably not what I would recommend for a Black Templar army now that I know better, but it gave me a variety of models!

Dettol for plastics does work, don't dilute it at all, just put úm in and let úm soak for 24 hours. Leaving them in longer doesn't hurt either, just makes them smell bad.

If your sibling doesn't want to go regular chapter, let him make his own up. He might enjoy painting more that way

Using AOBR I'd recommend Black Templars. Adding a box of Devastators gives you two groups of four Bolter marines and a Lascannon, two excellent objective camping squads. Getting 2 Cyclone Missile Launchers (and a Terminator Power fist for the sergeant to make the squad legal) lets you field what is quite possibly the best unit in the Black Templars Codex, the double CML tank hunter Terminator Squad. Depending on whether you get a Power Weapon in the Devastator box or not (can't remember ATM) the Commander can easily be converted into an Emperor's champion. The Dreadnought is fine as it is. With this plan, you'd use all of the Marines except the flamer and missile launcher.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Id recommend you not start him on black templars to begin with...our codex is out of date and he will probably have a hard time being competetive and that may frustrate someone his age. And don't let the fact that they're black models fool you, painting up a good looking black templar marine is just as, if not more difficult than other chapters...if only because we don't have the benefit of dumping a wash all over our model as an instant "not bad" paint job that provides highlights and details.

Long story short: don't pick black templars unless he just LOVES their fluff more than other chapters

Crimson Fists have dark blue armor. They usually make for a good looking army.

Whatever you do, don't get the two mixed up, Nail Polish Remover will turn your little plastic mans into big plastic goop.

Indeed, even acetone free stuff will melt your plastics if you leave it in for too long (ie more than a very short period of time). I've left stuff in dettol for months with no problem.

As for painting black, paint them a mid-dark grey then wash black. For some added depth wash them blue first, then highlight with the original colour if you feel like it.
