Subject: Black Templar vs Tyranids (3000pts) The last hoo-rah

Hey Dakka, my last game with the templar is coming up before they get put on the shelf/put on ebay. My friend has challenged me to one final game before this happens and of course I accepted. After all I took a vow...to accept any challenge no matter the odds My templar have served me well, never having place worse than 3rd place in any tournament (nothing big sadly) and crushing my nid friend over and over. So he will be bringing all of his guns and all of his monsters and aiming them all at me, this is his last chance! I cannot let him have this victory or else I will never hear the end of it. I do not know his list but here is mine, any comments/suggestions would be great thanks.
Black Templar, Crusade Grimaldus
Marshal
Power fist, storm shield, Artificer armour, Honours, Adamantine mantle
Total: 185pts
Emperor’s Champion 140pts
Grimaldus 195pts
X2 5 Assault terminators
Furious charge,Land raider crusader,Smoke launchers
Total:966pts
5 terminators
2 assault cannons
Total: 240pts
X2 10 Initiates, 10 neophytes
Power fist, meltagun
Total: 570pts
10 assault initiates
power fist, 3 storm shields
Total: 244pts
X2 3 Land speeders
-1 assault cannon, 2 missile launchers
Total: 440pts
Total: 2980
I know its not the best list and alot of units are pretty questionable but I'm mostly making do with what I have. The reason my nid friend chose the high point value is because he knows I have short range of models where as he has easily 10000pts of nids (which is why I cannot predict his list). The battle will go down this Sunday, I've got my camera charged and I'm excited to field all of my units in one game (never done it before).

I think you need more shooting. That's the strength of the Templars now post-FAQ IMO. Trying to out-assault nids isn't going to end well in most cases.

If I wanted to shoot I'd play any other kind of space marine. I live for the assault phase! Plus I don't own a single bolter marine (didn't like modeling them).

That's where you're wrong. BT is now one of the shootiest marine armies, thanks to cheap cyclones and tank hunters in abundance.

Fair enough. I can dig it that you prefer to play a more assaulty MEQ army.
But I just can't help but feel sorry for you if your opponent brings stealer-shock with 3 trygons and Swarmie.
On the other hand, you did say your opponent has never beaten your assaulty BT before....

Oh I agree that templar can perform the shooting very well. The double assault cannon terminators wreck house.
I'm sure he has some plans cooked up for me but it should be fun nonetheless. I love a good fight where the chainsaws become so clogged with filthy xenos blood that all I can do is use them as a flail.

Doom of malatai and stealers could be a nice mix if your running a broodlord with them
Everyone lowered LD, then all take LD tests on 3D6 and suffer wounds with no saves.
Combat with nids is interesting, but as jy said, BT have some evil shooting.
Just pick your fights make sure you shoot stealers.
As fun as CC is, alot of people dislike my 4x 12 stealer units with broodlords.

Solidarity Brother/Sister! I concur that assaulting Stealers is a pretty y situation and if you don't thin the numbers you are essentially guaranteed a sticky end. That said, it's always better to assault them than the other way around.
For future reference, give the Marshal TDA. You get Terminator Honours included with it as well as the 2+ for 5pts more than artificer. Also think that there are too many Neophytes. Cut their numbers for:
A. MOAR Assault Terminators
B. MOAR LRC's

Fighting stealers I found that I can pick where the fight happens, usually terrain to deny them that initiative bonus. My big gameplan is to use the troop mobs to soak up those wounds, they can handle it usually. If I can keep my 3 terminators in reserve for when the fighting is thickest I should be ok. I fear an objective game though as I feel I'll be too cornered. Automatically Appended Next Post: The Crusader wrote:Solidarity Brother/Sister! Yes the TDA is pretty solid, but I don't have it modeled on him Can never have too many neophytes! Extra bodies works well. But even if I did want to cut them out I have nothing else to add in. I have no extra termies to fill out the squads, I only have 2 LRCs (both being fielded already) and both my elite and fast attack slots are full.

Well the battle concludes! Massacre victory for the templar. No xenos managed to escape my wrath! It was a bloody game with alot of big, mean tyranids. Unfortunately he didn't give me his list at the end so I will have to try and regurgitate it from memory. Also the pictures turned out horribly as I just couldn't get everything in one shot.

So the game went well but I am having difficulties with the pictures. Anyway the 'nid list to my knowledge was
Swarm lord
gaurd, 2 spore ('nid droppod things)
Hive tyrant
Gaurd, 2 spores
X2 2 Zoanthropes
Mawloch
X2 Trygon prime
big momma fex
X4 12 genestealers w/ broodlord
15ish gaunts
Deployment :
So we played a pitch battle with 2 objectives. I decided to take second turn to see how he would deploy and surprise surprise he didn't deploy a single unit. I tried to set up my templar properly for the coming storm. the hardest part was positioning the two LRCs with the assault terminators. My pure lightning claw squad took the left flank while the thunder hammers and marshal took the right flank. Grimaldus and the 40 foot marines milled around the centre of my battle field. Since I knew he had outflanking genestealers inbound I tried my best to keep everything away from the board edges, using the LRCs bulk to hopefully funnel them during the game.
Turn 1:
The horror movie that is this game begins. The tyranids are all in reserve so all I can do is move around my vehicles, turbo-boosting my two landspeeder squadrons and moving the LRCs 6" each and popping smoke. I started moving one of crusade squads (the one without Grimaldus) down field, keeping them within 6" of the mighty chaplain for unmatched zeal.
Turn 2:
Nid
Movement
My opponent gets this evil grin on his face and I know its time, no more last minute ammo checks or final blessings because here comes the swarm. Through some crazy tyranid rules all of his reserves come in on a 2+ on turn 2 which meant just about everything came in. 1 genestealer squad, 1 zoanthrope squad and the hive tyrant did not come down in the initial wave. Then the scatter dice start rolling and, I was told later, I started screaming. First the mawloch came out of the ground, swallowing 4 scouts from Grimaldus' squad. Next the trygon primes pop out of the ground right in the middle of my army, cutting off my wandering crusade squad. Then the spores rained down from above, dropping the swarm lord and his entourage around the middle of the table, all teeth and arms. Finally the 'stealers all came in. apparently he was able to re-roll the table edge which allowed him to place the first 3 squads all on my left flank along with mommafex. The zoanthropes pop out of a trygon hole and look menacingly at my LRC with the claw termies. Finally his lonesome gaunt squad walked on and at on the objective in his deployment.
Shooting
Bang bang bang tyranid shots fly out everywhere but nothing happens. The 'thropes wiffed on their roles and nothing else could be done.
Assault
One of the genestealer squads actually get the charge off on my left flank LRC and through shear stupidity (rending broodlord) manage to immobilize my mighty vehicle.
Templar
Movement
My movement phase is rather uneventful as the bugs are already in my face. My hammer squad drive up towards the swarm lord while the claw squad decide to go after the trygon prime and zoanthropes behind them.
Shooting
My target for this round was the swarm lord so all guns that I could bear were locked on him. Between my land speeder squads, assault cannon terminators, LRC and the kitchen sink I managed to kill off most of the guards and wounded the swarm lord himself. My other, now immobilized, LRC fires full blast in to the genestealer squad that immobilized it, reducing the squad size down to 4. Grimaldus and his squad fired at the mawloch, taking it down a wound with the plasma pistol.
Assault
My claw termies and EC charge the trygon prime and split charge the zoanthropes, screaming bloody murder as they went. Despite my re-rollable hits and wounds and str 5 I only manage to take off 3 wounds on the Trygon while the 'thropes simply shrugged. In return the trygon ate 3 terminators for lunch. Bad charge. On the other side of the battlefield my marshal and hammernators charge the swarm lord and surviving guard, taking down the big guy while losing 2 in return. Finally Grimaldus and co. decided to charge the mawloch, inflicting enough wounds to take down the beast.
Turn 3:
Nid
Movement
The rest of his army manages to come in at this point, the hive tyrant landing right on top of my objective though his guard scatter a bit aways. Thankfully his final stealer squad comes in on the wrong side and he opts to sit them in his deployment zone. The rest of his movement brings his other 3 units of stealers closer to the middle of battle, staring hungerily at my army. Mommafex, who forgot to spawn last turn, moves in to charge range of the immbolized LRC and manages to spawn 15 gaunts...ffffffff.
Shooting
the zoanthropes attempt to blow up my hammernators but they shrug off the wounds with ease. The spores and other big things spray a plethora of flesh eating bullets at different units, killing troops here and there. His hive tyrant, in his eternal dickishness, casts peroxism on Grimaldus' squad.
Assault
Well the second trygon prime (unwounded) charges my trapped crusader squad and proceeds to eat them, killing off most of the scouts. The wounded trygon and a squad of 'stealers finish off my claw termies though not before I was able to take a few stealers with me. The second squad of stealers charge my landspeeder squadron and roll 3 pens and 2 glances. The 3 pens are 4,5,6 (all dead) and the two glances are stun and weapon destroy. Thanks to allocation shenanigans all of the pens go on one speeder that takes a few stealers with it while the other two remain relatively unscathed. Finally mommafex finished off the LRC, leaving the massive wreck in its wake.
Templar
Movement
The fighting was getting thick at this point and I had to do what I could. The hammernators briskly walked over to the desperate combat between trygon prime and crusader squad. Grimaldus and co. moved in to position to assault the stealers, despite my ws 1 bs 1, that had just killed off the claw termies along with the zoanthropes. I knew I had to kill the troops. The trygon with 3 wounds was still an issue but one of my landspeeder squadrons was usesless this round and had to turboboost away. For shooting this left me with a LRC, assault cannon terminators and 1 speeder squadron. The LRC moved in to position to shoot the hive tyrant that was threatening my entire gameplan while the speeders moved to where they could shoot either the trygon or the tyrant.
Shooting
Well the Emperor was with me for the shooting phase. With the tyrant's guards tied up with my assault squad I was able to focuse fire the tyrant easily enough. Through some dumb luck the LRC and termies managed to finish off the tyrant (poor saves on his part) which left my speeder squadron free to shoot the wounded trygon, krak missiles finishing it off. Grimaldus and co. fired off some half hearted shots in to the stealers at bs 1, managing to kill 1 stealer.
Assault
The hammernators charged the remaining trygon to try and save my wayward crusader squad. Before the trygon was taken down by the plethora of hammer attacks it chomped on some marines, bringing the squad down to 6 men. Grimaldus and co. managed to charge the stealers where Grimaldus was seduced by a broodlord, robbing me of my power weapon attacks. The combat faltered as the stealers ripped in to the scouts and servitors but the marines were able to answer in kind, finishing off the stealers with some lucky additional fearless saves. Meanwhile the assault squad finally managed to finish off the tyrant guard and consolidated 6"! Grimaldus and co. were looking to be surrounded by the 3rd stealers and the 15 gaunts. During the combat the zoanthropes had lived, tying up my chaplain. Through some crafty maneuvering I put the 5 survivors of the assault squad in the path of the stealer squad as sacrifice to prevent Grimaldus from being surrounded on all sides.
Turn 4
Nids
Movement
The gaunts and two remaining stealer squads (one at half strength the other at full) moved forward, the half strength squad glaring at my assault marines that were in the way and hidden in cover. Mommafex spawned another 12 gaunts that followed up behind the first 15. His remaining zoanthropes moved towards my wandering crusader squad, hoping to kill them before they got to the objective on the other side of the table (the wanderers were around the middle of the board).
Shooting
The zoanthropes were deffinitely drunk this game as this missed terribly. Otherwise spores uselessly shot at different targets.
Assault
The half strengh stealers charged the assault marines in cover while the 15 gaunts went to tie down Grimaldus and co. The marines managed to kill most of the stealers before they themselves were ripped apart by the broodlord, leaving me with 2 men left. Grimaldus and co. slaughtered many gaunts and finally put some wounds on the zoanthropes that had been there all game. Minimal casualties in return. The only problem was the combat grinded to a halt. At the middle of the table the zoanthropes charged my wandering crusade to try and tie them down but ended up failing a bunch of saves, resulting in an easy 5" massacre for my troops who boldly marched towards the far end objective.
Templar
Movement
With the spore still sitting on my objective I turned my LRC and assault cannon termies towards it to make sure it died while my speeder squadrons pointed their guns at the full squad of genestealers that was still in my deployment. The hammernators milled about and went for some of the nearby spores. The wanderers moved and ran 5" to close the distance, putting them within charge range of the gaunts that were lurking on the objective.
Shooting
All missiles were fired! frags and heavy bolters ripped in to the stealer squad, killing all but the broodlord. The LRC blew apart the spore while the assault cannon termies fired at another spore to bring it down a few wounds.
Assault
The hammernators made quick work of two of the spores, leaving one left. grimaldus chose this moment to reveal his holy relic, giving his squad and the assault squad +1 attack for the round. Grimaldus then killed 6 gaunts in one swing and finally the 'thropes went down, freeing the squad from combat just in time to face down the next 12 gaunts, cosolidating back within range of my own objective. the broodlord in combat killed the last of the basic assault marines, leaving only Mr.Powerfist who used his magical two attacks to finish off the broodlord! He then pointed a menacing finger at the lonely broodlord that had its squad blown to bits and whispered "you and me".
Turn 5
Nids
Movement
Lonely broodlord sidestepped the assault marine to join combat against Grimaldus with the 12 gaunts. mommafex moved up behind and spawned another 8 gaunts. At this point he remembered stealer squad 4 and ran them slowly through terrain to help support the gaunts for turn 6.
Shooting
Pew pew
Assault
The 12 gaunts charged and got massacred, makign the broodlord take far too many fearless rolls, killing him too.
Templar
Movement
Guns moved closer to momma fex, wanderers moved towards lurking gaunt squad. Full speeder squadron moved within range of the stealer squadron.
Shooting
With my remaining guns I took out mommafex which ended up killing the entire squad of 8 gaunts. Also the last spore died. the speeders took out some stealers but had mostly missed with the important frags.
Assault
wanderers charged gaunts, gaunts died.
Turn 6
He only had his stealers which he used to charge my wanderers. He was very close to a tie since if the marines survived he would've killed them on my turn's assault phase and the game would've ended. It actually came down to 1 fearless armour save I failed that finished off the squad, letting my speeders light up the remaining gaunts and giving me the massacre!!
