Hello all. In this thread I will log the progress of my latest project; an Ork House / Bunker (house made from bolted-together scrap metal).
I used double cardboard glued together in opposing direction (if you get what I mean) to make it more sturdy. I made a single long piece and then cut slits into just one layer where I wanted to bend it. I spaced the bends somewhat haphazardly to make the house an irregular shape. Then I saw one side was the smallest so I decided to put a ladder there to get up to the rooftop platform. I made the ladder from some wooden sticks used to hold up plants.
I then lay the house on a bigger sheet of double cardboard, traced the side where the ladder would be and two sides next to it, the rest of the shape extending the house to have the rooftop platform actually bigger than the house.
I cut out the door and windows / firing slots and used a block of wood long enough to put through the house (then an irregular polygon) and lay it between my knees to make the cuts.
I then painted the house and platform black with an acrylic paint that turns into an almost rubbery kind of coating which greatly improves the strength and durability of the cardboard and makes everything I glue to it stick really well. (for those who are interested it´s called REEVES, I´m not plugging, I just like the paint).
Next I cut up random sized squares of regular card and glued them on the entire outer surface of the house in an as-random-as-could-be manner to represent scrap metal bolted together.
-This is what I have so far:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Next I put some railing along two sides of the house where the platform kinda slots into place, the rest of the railing will be a part of the platform itself.

Railing:

And with platform in place:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So next I painted and sealed all the exposed edges on the cardboard (inside the windows, door and along the roof) did the roof and glued on some supporting beams as the pics will illustrate.
This is all I will do tonight (it´s 01:42 at my place) and tomorrow I will make the base, do the railing along the rest of the roof and whatnot. Only time will tell

Roof done:

And supporting beams:

With house:

And then right side up:

Now the railing on the roof is done and I´m going to find a suitable base material, trace it out and cut... I´ll be right back

I don't know how much I like the overhang; I'd definitely stick some kind of ground support struts coming down from it, as it hangs out too much to reasonably be sticking out that far without sagging. After that, some rivets, and some Orky/looted bits all over it, it should look great!

Supporting crossbeams from the ground was the plan
Lots and lots of rivets and scattered rubble all around, don´t you worry

Crossbeams... because... crossbeams.

I´m afraid this is all I can do today as I have to get my a** to work...
Tomorrow some ground work and rubble

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yay! I get a ride to work so I can ramble a bit more

So I was thinking of making some barricade things that run between the supporting beams and then just a random mess of dirt piles, odd bitz and rubble and then cover the base with sand.
Then I will turn to riveting and then painting
Any and all suggestions welcome.

Looks Really nice, looking forward to the finished product!
also, just a thought, you could put some half or fully looted vehicles scattered around the base of the building

Yes I have seen a few wrecked vehicle type barricades and like it a lot. But since actual WH40k models are quite expensive to use I think I might hit the toy store and find a suitable truck to "crash" At least I´ll look into it

Alright now, the supporting struts are done and it´s time for some groundwork.

Just a small update:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I´ve decided to leave the base mostly flat to be able to place modular rubble, barricades, wrecks and whatnot around the building. That way I can have some variation... So on with the base work!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Did the floor inside and laid down a coat of filler on the base...
Now I´m thinking how I am going to do the inside of the walls.
I want to keep it basic, either mud or concrete (same texture, different color).
The old school Orks typically had houses made from yellow-ish sand mud.
I can´t really envision Orks pouring concrete but a mud house reinforced with scrap metal is quite plausible I think.

Floor:

Filler base coat:

With roof (which comes off, yes):

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Painted the base and inside of the walls with sand textured paint. I will then add some rubble and odd bitz and random blotches of sand and gravel.
Then I will have to find a plastic rod or something to make lots and lots of rivets. Then spray paint the entire thing black and start painting

It´s been a while since I uploaded this thread, mainly because I decided to expand my Ork army and start a Space Marine army as well. I´ve got models for a 1000point army each and there-of about half of them painted. But yesterday my eyes caught a glimpse of this house and I got the itch to continue working on it. So I sat down and painted the whole thing I will do some more highlighting on the wood and maybe do some patches of grass on the base. I´m also thinking of a WAAAAAGH!!! banner and some bitz and gubbins aswell. I haven´t riveted it yet because I need to find something to make the darn rivets! but don´t you worry, this will have lots and lots of rivets
Until then, I hope you like the progress so far

The Ork thought the flashes from the camera were from explosions and came running out waving his power klaw hoping for some war action, hence I did not get him in focus

I know some of you will wonder what´s up with the inner walls so let me explain. My idea was to build upon the old school Ork houses which were typically made from clay/dirt so I thought it proper to have my orks build a house in the same fashion, using the local dirt, hence the same color as the dirt/sand on the base, but reinforced with some dirty and rusted scrap metal looted from nearby imperial structures

I was certain this thread was going to be about an antisocial but genius painboy with a walking stick.

This is good work though. How did you make the base? You have a jigsaw to hand? Sturdy basing is one thing I repeatedly skimp on and find it repeatedly comes back to haunt me.

Cool ork house. I like the way you made the roof. One thought for the interior walls, maybe add a few sheets of metal here and there, say... for patches, or just as extra support where the ork thought it was needed.

and honestly, I thought the flashes were from explosions too- had my axe all in the air and waving'

Looking very good so far.

FYI a REALLY easy rust (ferrus rust) effect is Paint a dark brown, old GW scorched brown for example (I prefer Liquitex Burnt Umber) then after it is dry slop on a messy wash of a "raw Sienna" artists paint (I use Liquitex) It will form a very nice "rusted look especially if you have any "chunks" in the raw sienna wash (they will diffuse out a bit giving a mottled effect that looks quite good).

Pic of a "bunker" roof I painted using this technique

-That would be brilliant

And the base is cut out of masonite using a jigsaw indeed.

Patches on the inside sound cool and could be an excellent target for some ork graffiti even.

Also small update... rivets!

I just grabbed some card, folded it two times and took a leather hole punch to it = lots and lots of rivets in a relatively short time. Then I pour a small glob of glue on a piece of card, grab my scalpel knife, pick up a rivet by the point of the blade, dip it in glue and put in place. Took me about an hour to rivet the whole thing

So now that´s out of the way, time for another cup and on to some drybrushing on the wood and painting the rivets...

Now it´s been quite some time since I worked on this project but I do have a tiny update.
Rivets have been painted
I will hopefully get around to do some proper rust and finish the highlights on the woodwork soon.
