Rupert Murdoch, New Corp. chief executive and outspoken octogenarian media mogul, took to Twitter on Sunday to weigh in on the breakup of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. And Murdoch's tweets about Scientology sparked a big backlash.
"Scientology back in news," Murdoch tweeted. "Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in [hierarchy]."
The owner of Fox News, Wall Street Journal and New York Post followed the "cult" comment with another tweet.
"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop," Murdoch wrote. "Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."
While Cruise is often associated with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, the Los Angeles Times noted, he has also starred in films for 20th Century Fox--the studio owned by News Corporation--and is "known for being prickly about being challenged about his involvement with Scientology."
Murdoch, though, is standing by his comments.
"Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks," he wrote later. "Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."
After a user asked Murdoch for his thoughts on Mormonism, he responded: "Mormonism a mystery to me, but Mormons certainly not evil."
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I'm pretty sure Murdoch's empire does about the same amount of real world harm as Scientology.

Newscorp doesn't have an agenda, it has editorial space that they'll sell to whatever political party offers the best political favours.
Which in one sense isn't as bad because its only temporary and therefore probably not as damaging, but on the other hand is just so much worse. I mean, to lie because you believe in some greater cause is one thing, but to lie for the sake of money...

They think Tom Cruise is 'in on it', like David Miscavige? He might have a high rank in the organisation but could that be as the most well known parishioner/dupe.

Didn't the previous wives complain of the same thing?

Huh. The overlord of a corporation that has brainwashed a dangerous number of people is speaking out against a corporation that has brainwashed a dangerous number of people.
The impact of FOX News in getting stupid and downright dangerous ideas to be generally accepted among the Republican Party is a big deal, you know.
Or how about the actions of Murdoch news agencies in England?

It isn't about political leaning. As I already said in this thread, NewsCorp across the globe isn't dedicated to any particular political ideology, it just attaches itself to whoever offers Murdoch the best deal.
And yes, news organisations that are willing to lie for personal gain are a really bad thing.

Scientology black ops squads must be facing a monumental 'amoral dilemma' right now.
Do they go through the usual motions and practice 'disconnection' on Katie Holmes, or not.
The world is watching, so if they are caught it will increase the current PR disaster by an order of magnitude, possibly even invoke legal retribution long overdue.

I have no idea what that means, and I'm pretty OK with it.

Look, I have no love of Fox News, but some of you guys are out of your gourds by putting them in the same category as a cult, especially one in its own category like Scientology. Fox News and News Corp don't "brainwash" people. They simply cater to people of a conservative bent...and sometimes not even that. Yes, parts of News Corp have done illegal things, and they have that in common with the CoS. But that doesn't make the entire News Corp organization morally bankrupt.
I worked at a News Corp company, and certainly heard some interesting stories. But when Rupert Murdoch starts abducting people and subjecting them to behavioral modification techniques in order to make them compliant little Fox News viewers, you can all let me know. When News Corp starts tearing apart families and subjecting people to all kinds of financial hardships in the name of reaching higher states of being, be sure to give me a call. Until then, maybe do a little research on Scientology and try to keep your opinions fair and balanced?

Or maybe you should do a little research on Fox News. If they limited themselves to focusing on a particular sort of news story, that wouldn't be objectionable. Outright fabrications presented as fact are.
