I just realized I'm going to need movement trays for this game. I've been so busy making lists and ogling models on GWs site that I forgot all about movement trays. Are there any rules/stipulations to movement trays that I should be aware of? If I don't use the GW modular trays at GW tournaments would I get penalized or disqualified?

You are not 'required' to use them, they are simply a convenient way of moving models.
That being said, they greatly speed up play (imagine moving 40 halberdiers and ranking them up every turn...) and are considered to be an essential tool. Nothing says you have to use GW ones, mate of mine has used folded paper before.

Also, movement trays can be a nice way of adding that 'extra bit of decoration', or simplifying transport (i made magnetic ones and slot the ranked up units in one of my cases...

I'm also interested in this, but for chariots. Is there a specific size for chariot movement trays?

I was in a similar situation, however I remember my first Wargame was a small 500 point Fantasy battle when I was in 6th grade. Orcs vs Dwarves. Was the starter set or something, but my friend wanted to get me into wargaming and, while he mostly played 40k, he didn't have the starter set because he learned 40k from playing with his dad.

Anyways he cut out cardboard movement trays to match the squad footprints.

There's no rule for movement trays, and I've never, ever, ever heard of a tournament penalizing anyone for their movement trays, so long as they are not modeled to give some advantage (like an elevated position on the tray or something, but that is me reaching and stretching).

As far as any tips for them, magnetizing is a good idea.

Why would Chariots(other than TK Chariot units) need a movement tray? They're a single model with a prescribed base size.

I've got an old metal Black Coach that I'm almost finished painting, and the horses are skeleton and on plastic rectangular bases that the Coach itself doesn't have. Just seems like it would be more convenient if I had everything glued to one base and could move it easier all together.

Go out and buy yourself a Chariot base(50mmx100mm) to place it on, they've been making them for years now.

You can make movement trays out of anything that works. Just cut the material to the proper dimensions for the unit.

You definitly want to have edges of some sort of barrier to stop the models from sliding off.

Single model units, or units of less then 5 or so models, won't need a movement tray. Like my Mournfang Cavelry don't need a movement tray.

The GW trays are nice and convenient though, and not a bad value either.

There actually are rules for movement trays. They say ignore the movement tray for all measuring purposes.

Oh, another tip for movement trays is to test them out on the tables you usually play on before you buy them in bulk. Some trays can slip or stick, and it may benefit you to know ahead of time.

And sometimes you will need to take the models out of the trays to allow the unit to stand somewhere. Like if they are partly on a hill or something.

I've actually found this untrue. Usually my units are magnetized to the tray so unless its the extreme situation, they're usually safe. In the extreme situation we usually agree to let dice be used as markers to show where the unit is. Or just agree "we know where it is."

Of course thats dependent on having magnetized trays. And maybe the hill's angle still makes it unfeasable.

I recommend people make their own movement trays; I can make a plasticard 10x5 movement tray within 20 minutes. Just measure how long/wide the base needs to be... The sides will naturally be as long as these dimensions on the bottom, but you want them to be 4mm tall and for the top length to be 3mm shorter than the bottom. You also want supporting struts to be 3mmx4mm to keep the sides standing up. Thataway you have a movement tray with sides angled the same way as the GW bases.

I just made a bunch for a new Skaven force using the method in this video. Very quick and easy.

The method I use for my movement trays is:

I use the GW tray kit. It is a pretty decent deal, and provides plenty of leftover material, so I rarely buy lots of it since my armies are mostly mature and I rarely need new trays.

On the "floor" of the tray, I put a piece of roofing single down, attached with a combination of greenstuff and super glue.

On the model bases themselves, it depends on the base. If it has a "gap" for something to fit, a small magnet, superglued in. If it is a resin base that is flush and has no gap, I'll use that fridge magnet stuff that has a magnetic flexible cloth with an adhesive on one side.

The coach itself does, and you could probably just green stuff the gap between the horse's bases and that one to make it into one long base.

True. You could also just create a 50x150mm movement tray for it all too.

So, the Black Coach is too long for that base? Or do the horses sit too high for it or something?
