Great in its day, can't really deny it tailed off dramatically in the last few seasons.
... in it's day though pretty much required viewing.

I would watch the red dwarf crew if they were wrinkled fat prunes. the show is quite possibly the best Sci-Fi comedy ever made. A close second though, would by Hyper Drive. that make me laugh start to finish.
Got to give it a go, they have aged a lot but the first series was over 20 years ago. Hopefully it will be okay. I really liked the run from series 3-6 myself so if it's more like than I will be happy.

Yeah Back to Earth fell a bit flat for me but that trailer made me smile and will admit to a very tiny goosebump of nostalgia form on my back.
Although a short taste I definitely felt it had the energy of the older series and will now look forward to it's first showing and its many many repeats. Well done Dave!

As an american fanatic of Red Dwarf, I have to watch it. Back to earth was not great, and the series really started to slip near the end, but any new dwarf is good dwarf in my book*
Back to earth felt odd without a studio audience, it didn't feel like Red Dwarf.
I think the idea that the last two seasons "tailed off dramatically" is a bit unfair. They didn't live up to previous serious but were still full of laughs. For example...

1: What on earth happened to Kryten's nose?
2: How come Rimmer's now a hologram? In Series 9 he was real, right?
Spoiler:
In series 8, he was real. There was no real series 9, only references to a fictional off-screen series 9 in Back To Earth. Series 8 ends with Red Dwarf being abandoned during its destruction with Rimmer the only one left on board. Back To Earth starts 9 years after that ending with Red Dwarf and crew back to how things were for seasons 1 - 4 with Rimmer a hologram again, but minus Holly (malfunctioned due to water damage from a tap left running), and Kochanski supposedly killed off (although over the story of Back To Earth, it's revealed her death was fake, and she actually left Red Dwarf in Blue Midget).

The Kasrkin were just men. It made their actions all the more astonishing. Six white blurs, they fell upon the cultists, lasguns barking at close range. They wasted no shots. One shot, one kill. - Eisenhorn: Malleus
