Tau have very little ap2 weaponry. plasmas and railguns......im not a huge fan of crisis suits because they always get pummeled ASAP. It would be cool to see ehtereals(since they are supposedly making an ALL TAU codex and possibly getting rid of kroot n things) in sort of a melee aspect. Special shields to give a 3++ ilvuln and Honor warsythes.....set up similar ot warlocks n farseer type thing....

Good idea or gakky?

Since when is it going to be an "All Tau" codex?

GW wouldn't do that. They already have too many Kroot models and they also have Vespid.

The new rumors include NEW Vespid and the Demiurg.

...You're suggesting that the etherial would risk his life to a 2/3 chance of saving? Do you even slightly understand how important they are to the tau? The tau were happy to give up 77 of each cast for dark eldar help, but would not let even one etherial go. Then they were willing to give away 700 of each cast, but still wouldn't allow an etherial to be sacrificed. They're not going to just let the etherial be thrown away in combat!

Considering I run a no battlesuit tau army with an ethereal, I can tell you lacking ap 2 hurts sometimes. but then I simply reply with 24 pulse rifle shots. Tends to work. If not, I normally have 72 more shots plus other stuff floating around.

Good players can keep their crisis suits alive, sometimes for the whole game.

Tau aren't a melee race. Instead of thinking about going into melee we should be thinking how tau stay out of melee. Failsafe drones are a good idea, overwatch helps, firing normally on overwatch would probably alone solve the problem for tau.

The battle suits in your HQ and Elite section have scads of ap 1/2. It is their primary role to do whatever the rest of the army isn't doing. Furthermore with the jetpack rules its very hard for even middle of the road players to get a grip on them while they are flitting around the board. I know you dislike them however until further notice its an old book with few options. If you dislike one of the best options your even further behind the curve.

If you must go suit-less then you will have to bury terminators in volume of firewarrior fire, not impossible however much less certain.

When the new book comes out I expect we will not have much more in ways of tools of handing TEQ or MEQ, we already excel in that department via a rather robust shooting phase. We might see a CC option that isn't lolkroot however I would expect more of the same (given everything we have been given in 6th, its not a bad state of things).

To the question specifically no, the ethereal should not be our cc response team... period.

Keep crisis suits alive and they won't "Get pummeled ASAP". They have plenty of mobility to avoid death; and please fix your grammar/spelling. It makes reading and responding to posts much less of a chore.

No Tau who are good in combat please. At most I'd expect an exceptionally CC skilled Tau to be somewhere between a guardsman and a marine only with better wargear.

Let the mediocre Kroot stay the best CC troops we get, boost Vespid a little so that they are viable and reinforce what Tau do best, shooting.

Better guns, better wargear, better tech, not better stats.

If there was any CC unit that I'd like to see Tau get, it would be self-destructing suicide drones. Something you could take with a firewarrior squad, and then detach from the unit to send in on its own to deter enemy troops with one hell of a blaze of glory.

O.O Think you have little ap2 guns? Look at the Tyranid codex, we have one ap2 weapon. Only the overpriced Carnifex can purchase it and it's a blast with 12" range so there's always a good chance you ap2 yourself haha

If you dont like Crisis suits, Stealth suits are an option as they can take 2 AP1 weapons per squad

Also the Fast Attack Piranha's can take 5 AP1 weapons per squad as well


Asking for the Ethereal to become a melee powerhouse is a bit silly tho, you should read up more Tau lore

Also you need to get used to map movements and combat tactics if your Crisis suits are dying too fast

The OP apparently doesn't like the look of the current crisis suits, now I don't either but when I started tau, as that was when I started 40k I needed them to play rather than die every game.

Now, 4 years later, I don't use battlesuits anymore and remain a tough opponent only due to my experience and tactics. I've played those games against TEQ armies like deathwing with my tau and had wins and losses. When my only ap 1-2 is shadowsun and 5 railguns, it gets tough, but when the going gets tough the good players shine.

Stealth suits are too expensive to get that ap on the field. Broadsides can do the job, but they get even more expensive.

Tau don't, and should never, need a CC unit that's amazing. The army just doesn't do it. Their alien auxiliary units are supposed to do this, and kroot do to an extent, but the tau better not get some kind of melee unit anywhere close to TH/SS termies and such.

From what I've gathered, the plan from the design team is a Tau Codex and a Kroot Codex.

Tau have plenty of AP 1/2, if you decide not to use it, doesn't mean it's not there.

That’s impossible unless you are breaking the rules. You have to have at least 1 battlesuits for the HQ as the ethereal does not count as a commander.

How do we have plenty? Plasma, Fusion and railguns that’s it, all of them are on expensive units as well so we get limited amounts compared to most other army’s. On the whole we end up with less AP1/2 in our army’s then space marines and other none Tau army’s.

EDIT: The problem is price about the cheapest AP2 shot we can take are battlesuits at 60points but that’s without a target array at BS3, 70points for BS4. A railgun as great as it is still sets us back between 70 to 95points depending on setup.

Hopefully the new tau codex will allow a stealth suit HQ instead of relying on shadowsun, and either stealth suits as troops or stealth suits being able to take a few of the battlesuit only weapons.

I agree with Aun'Shi coming back. and i hope that because he is in the BRB that he'll appear in the new codex and be awesome! i love his fluff too much! i was sad to see him go in the first place even though i never used him lol
