So the question is simple, i'm forming up my army, and i'm wondering if Ironclad dreadnaught's work without a drop pod to beam then onto the board?

personally i want to play it with a DCCW and the seismic hammer, and i'm wondering if it would work starting on the board rather than deep strike, any advice?

I used an Ironclad about 5 times without a Drop Pod. I can tell you right off that it will not make its point back. Nor will it draws enough fire power.

Without a way to reliably get it into a threatening position fast, they're not worth it. They can be good in drop pods to interfere with your opponent's positioning and/or ravage exposed back line units, but with it just walking up the board I'd say no.

If you must footslog it, give it some HK missiles.

Even in a Pod, I'm not a huge fan of them unless you've got Vulkan in the list to TL the Melta and the HF.

An Ironclad Dreadnought with 2x HK + melta + HF in a drop pod is 200 points. It performs ok as long as there is another drop pod coming in at the same time.

If you can ask your opponent to use the Drop Pod as the Dreadnought Drop Pod, Ironclad Dreadnought is golden.

ok great looks like i'll have to drop it in. So if i swap the storm bolter and the melta for 2 heavy flamers, will it be 2 seperate HFs or twin linked HFs?

It should be two separate ones; but keep the Meltagun. Use one MG and one HF.

You can drop it in, but if you drop 1 you need to actually drop 2.

If you would rather it walk, give it two hunter killers and have another one walk with it, escorting something, like a land raider full of death.

Unless you're playing against an army that needs to get close to you, suhc as an assaulty marine army or tyranids. Then you may as well save the points on the pod as they will be coming to you

On the topic of footslogging Ironclads:

Has anyone tried the hurricane bolter option? I keep looking at it, paired with 2xHK missiles as part of a gunline. Or advancing with foot troops to lend support. I think it might have been more viable before the changes to rapid fire. Now it seems like it doesn't bring much more then another tactical squad does. Although the AV13 armor is tough to crack open, and if someone does decide to charge your line you have the hammer w/melta to tech them a lesson in pain.

Hurricane Bolters are good guns. But I don't want to lose my DCCW and my MG to have it. Especially not when it's already equipped with a HF for anti-infantry support; which is what you'd want the Hurricane Bolter for anyways.

You lose an attack for some anti-infantry shooting. TBH an ironclad is a vehicle killer, that's what he should be doing, though tossing on a heavy flamer is always a good idea.
