Just letting you know about a change to our carrier bags. We have a responsibility as a company to provide envorinmentally friendly materials wherever possible, and so we have changed the material of our carrier bags and also introduced a new Duffel bag (kind of like a bag for life!!). All our bags are made from recyclable, compostable material. We are also aiming to reduce the amount of bags that we use.

From now on we will charge a nominal fee for medium and large carrier bags of 10p, and 50p for the duffel bags. We will replace any of these 'bag for life' bags for a new one for free in the future, and recycle your old one for you.

This is rolling out in the UK anyway....possibly Australia too ? I'm not quite sure where that country stands on plastic bags at the moment....

... All in all, considering the small mountain of GW bags I've used and thrown away over the years, I'm alright with this. A lot of stores in the Uk have similar setups.

IIRC this is mainly due to legislation by ...errr. ... the EU or the govt. or some such.

The bag for life is, apparently, a drawstring satchel type affair according to a few scattered reports.

I believe Ireland has had a policy like this for a few years already.

The major super markets here sell environmentally friendly bags for a couple of dollars over here, so I could see GW doing it.

For $10 a bag.

When you see how many plastic bags are swirling around in the oceans and choking the fish, anything like this is welcome.

I see nothing wrong with this. Also duffel bags, is this limey for big plastic bags or actual duffel bags?

Thats the bag, I picked one up in London yesterday having not realised the whole pay-for-a-bag change. Its nice and resilient (survived a train journey anyways)

That looks perfect for carrying my KR cases in when they go in the car. The KR bags are good, but a little overkill for just getting from my flat to the car (Useful for when I have one bag on the train though).

Not that bad, sounds like at least a half decent move on their part. But I wonder how do they fare with liquids? Generally if I ever get a bag at all it was just to stop whatever paint spilling and wrecking other stuff.

So how badly will the theft rate tick up as the number of these bags increases?

Seriously, reusable bags while good for the environment and the few who actually have morals, many of the reusable bag users over here use them to steal from retail stores.

Shove several bags in one, come in as a team, make sure to distract the clerk and out comes the bags.

Same here, lol.

It's not a bad looking bag honestly. Cheap and resuable with a replacement easy to get.

I'm guessing this is U.K. / EU only though?

Yes, they will be great to carry 1 standard card case (or 2 of the half size cases) plus a book or accessories etc. Ideal for the short journeys - I must email GW to thank them for helping gamers to carry their KR Multicases

....because you can't do that with free plastic bags if you so chose?

I think someone is looking for faults just for the sake of it perhaps?

Anyway it's irrelevant this sort of thing is part of retailing here in the Uk and naturally has to apply to all their activities.

It is more obvious if you walk in with several Tesco bags into a GW store, even more so since you can see through most plastic bags.

notprop wrote:I think someone is looking for faults just for the sake of it perhaps?

My experience as a retail store manager who has to stop that said event from occurring literally on a daily basis may cloud my judgement a bit.

notprop wrote:Anyway it's irrelevant this sort of thing is part of retailing here in the Uk and naturally has to apply to all their activities.

Depends. There are groups who find a niche within the stealing community (not kidding there- they network) and so particular groups target specific stores constantly. A group that targets GW stores (which I'd admit is probably rare to begin with already) know they can get away with it if they have done so and would continue to do so so long as they can get away with it and it remains profitable.

The worst is here in America where you cannot under any circumstance engage the thief physically and you better have proof before you accuse them because many retail chains will not prosecute the thief (which the municipalities place the burden on for proving they stole from your store). Thieves can turn right around and sue you or the company for any number of reasons.

Plastic Bags incur a 22 cent levy here and it's really reduced plastic bag waste most people use bags for life now anyway but I have never been charged for a plastic bag in a GW store even though it's the law. I have actually had to stop them putting single blisters into plastic bags as it will fit in my bag or jacket pocket just as easy.

I always take my backpack to GW anyway, never been very comfortable at all carrying any sort of Games Workshop logo about my person - it damages my masculinity too much.

Good news anyway, people are lazy and the only way we put any effort in to being green is if we have to or if it costs us, so I'm all behind it. And what's 10p when you are wasting money on toys?

After leading a live of endless war, death and destruction I always like to be as eco friendly as possible in my civilian persona.

That aside there is also of course the obvious ones..

The vast majority of us adults either

a) Never ever buy from GW shops because its more expensive. (I literally never have for about 4 years, If I need something, Ill see it in the store, order it, and then have it 4 days later for 20% cheaper)

b) Even on the off chance I did, I would drop it into another shopping bag, because I don't want to look like someone that goes into GW.

I mean, really.. a man with my reputation?!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

A little ironic that a company that sells products that are almost exclusively made from non-renewable resources would make a bag for life to be eco-friendly...

For most purchases I usually decline a bag when they offer me one anyway. Doing away with their current plastic bags is not a bad idea for cost cutting for GW as well as reducing trash and pollution.

As for when I no longer need one of their bags, I recycle plastic bags and model sprues whenever possible.

You mean you put them in the recycling bin, and they might just sort it out and put it in the trash for you.
