Why? how is a throwaway convenience byproduct like a bag even remotely like miniatures, meant to be used for a long, long time? sorry, not seeing it.

I brought sprues once to my eco-centre and they told me to chuck it, they wouldn't take it.
In my county all plastics are generally welcome in the recycling bin, though I've never been to the recycling center to see what actually gets recycled and what does not. However, polystyrene can be turned back into raw pellets that can then be used to make new plastic items so there's no reason why it should be culled as trash rather than actually recycled except in cases where a particular recycling company or entity has no commercial use for it and they don't wish to spend the money to redirect it somewhere useful. But that has always been the problem with companies and governments (and individuals) recycling over just "throwing things away", if recycling costs more than making new a lot of places simply won't do it, though that is changing in many places as public landfills get full up to the point of public crisis.

Interesting move by GW, will they be selling these bfl's just in their own stores or encourage FLGS's to carry them as well? The community I live in is pretty liberal, so there is a conscious push to get people to use their own bag for stuff like groceries. A local supermarket even charges like .25 cents if you ask for paper, and they do not have plastic as an option. Would be nice to get one.

I think he's getting at the fact that the plastic used for miniatures is a petroleum product, a non-renewable resource. That is what all plastic is made of though, and if you recycle the leftover sprues(assuming you don't cut them up for terrain rubble) you aren't really wasting anything, in my opinion. Single use plastic items have a much more significant impact than anything like the plastic used for the miniatures.

Now what I would really like to see is a plastic recycling program from GW for those leftover sprues. Like a drop bin at stores to dispose of the sprues and have them sent back for reuse if possible. Obviously everyone can recycle on their own, but it's more of a education/awareness thing. I'm sure a lot of people don't even think to recycle leftover sprues.

Anyway, good move by GW on the bags. I hope they bring this to the US as well.

Most recycling programs in the US are education/awareness things. A large number(I believe even a majority) of trash collecting companies now actually sort their trash and pull out the recyclables at their facilities instead of just wholesale dumping like they used to.

I know that here, you can get separate recycle bins if you want, but it just goes in the truck with everything else if you actually watch it. We don't actually have a separate recycle day/truck.

you sure on that last bit? they use one truck for all the bins here, but the truck does have separate compartments if you look closely.

Yep, I'm sure. Here's a Waste Management(the service we use) truck:

It's the style that you throw things into the maw and it compacts it down somewhat until it reaches the facility and the entire rear section lifts up and dumps it out. Like this:

In addition, I've watched them load the trucks for a few houses after pulling my can outside just before they pulled up. They grab the neighbor's recycling bins and toss the stuff into the maw, same as the cans.

We own 7 of the things and never remember to bring them.

Then again, we shop at the Commissary and always ask for paper bags(my wife loves fried food).

leave them in your car maybe?

I walk to the grocery store, so a nice cloth bag with handles or a backpack is way better than a paper bag that the handles rip off of half way home.

I'm glad that a company who uses quite a bit of plastic is trying something at least to be Green

Sigh, it isn't just GW. The "green" nutjobs are slowly doing this same stuff here in the USA. San Francisco and Seattle now require this at most all stores. I don't mind switching from plastic to paper bags (it's what we used back in the early 70s and before) but charging extra for it is horsefeathers. That alone proves this isn't about "green" or "sustainable" anything, it's about dinging everyone for a nickle every time they go shopping. Tax revenue, baby. It's all about the taxes and fees local governments can use to shore up city budgets.

I, for one, would be happy to pay for a bag if I need one. If I'm buying $50 worth of stuff, what's an extra 10c? I could do with less shrapnel in my wallet, in any case.

As for charging for a bag "proving" that it isn't about the environment, I work in a retail store that does exactly this (except we donate all of our bag money to fundraisers to save endangered animals, so we're extra awesome). It's less about the actual money you give us and more about the fact that you won't take a bag unless you actually need one. So many times I've told people that we ask for "any donation" for a bag (usually people donate anywhere between 5-50c, but often they pay more), and they've realised that they could do without it.

If you think that paying for a bag is only to pad the company's bottom line, then you need to realise that the income from bags is virtually negligible compared to regular revenue. In our case, we typically have about a $10k per week store turnover; in a week, we typically raise about $70 in donations. GW's average sale value would no doubt be more than ours, so I imagine they'd earn even less from bags per sale than we ever could.

In the end, given that you're spending huge amounts of money on a luxury product (how much have you spent this year, Breotan? ), adding a few cents on to the end of a sale isn't a huge deal.

You know you can bring any bags into a store, not just that company's specific bag, right? If it's too much of a hassle to bring your own you're paying literally pennies for one you can use forever. What an absolute rip off.

Yes, taxes are what governments use to fund things. Welcome to living in a society. You can always try your hand at living off the land in the wilderness if the price of contributing to that society is too steep.

I just won't bother with a bag in future.

GW products are prestige - that means a lot of the pleasure is due to the packaging/feel, and the bag is a part of that.

Well, do you use your models to eat or use as tools?

What's wrong with taking pleasure in owning something?

I don't really care either way. I'll just carry it out instead of getting the bag so I don't have to pay extra. It's only 10c but I like to see the shocked look on the employees face when I say nope don't care, bubye.

I've never actually seen a GW bag in my whole life. The fact that there has never been a GW store within several hours of any place I've lived probably has something to do with that.

Take a breath then look over it a bit to see where you're both probably misunderstanding the other.

Because the way you came up with the using them as eating utensils seems like you meant to call them luxury items or something...

In the dark recesses of your mind...

I've never thought much about the bag my minis came in, or their packaging either, for that matter. Bag usually gets filled with the scraps of the torn open boxes and bits of clipped sprue and then tossed. Maybe I'll give the packaging and bag a good 'feel' next time I visit a GW store and see what this is all about.

It would not surprise me to walk into almost any retailer and be asked to pay for a bag. It gives the retailer an excuse to off-set the cost of their bags, and put forth a perceived image of being oh-so squeeky 'green'. Generally I go out of my way to avoid these merchants but it is becoming harder and harder to do so with so many jumping on the bandwagon.

My LGS just puts things in small brown paper bags. And that's even if I don't decline their offer. An Eldar Falcon is in a box already, I don't need a bag to carry the box that's carrying the parts.

As for reuseable bags being somehow bad, my wife and I use our blue and green fabric Meijer bags all the time. I even have one that I always use to bring my utensils and food for the weekend camping and to LARP events. I think we had three of them full in the car when we went on our honeymoon to Mammoth caves in KY.
