Hey guys,
This is just a silly thread but I really like hearing people's stories on why they chose their favourite army and why?
My first army was orks. I just loved the rustic, warband Neanderthal idea of them. Wave upon wave of blunt crude axes and poorly made machinery clunking over a wasteland to massacre the enemy!
My second army is now daemons which I'm working on. I really love the idea of the army being split between 4 gods, an each unit embodies that god perfectly! Like the sleek and slender slaanesh daemonettes, to the rage filled bloodthirster, the pox ridden plaguebearers, and the bizarre fateweaver! All the ritualistic idea being daemons is awesome too!
Id love to hear the concept for why your army drew you in, and If you stuck to it!

My first army ever was tau when I was a kid back then.
Dunno why but probably the whole robots, rootech style called in my kid heart!
Now when I came back to the hobby some years ago i bought chaos.
CSM is my army of choice and more of all, the night lords.
Maybe cause of theme, style and guerilla tactics. Perhaps of great novel writing by Aaron d. Bowden.
I love the blue of midnight, and after all hell yeah We are coming for you!!!!!
Oh and the renegade guard I have, I was truly inspired by the vraksian war and models from forge world.
I don't like IG theme, but a band of traitors who worship ceramite towering warriors and follow them into battle
Just makes my day !

Well, in 3rd ed it was DE (almost unbeatable), and in later editions mech Eldar (fast and deadly) and Orks (competitive and fun to play).
In the 6th ed, I will go for Necrons, GK, and Orks using ally detachments.

My first army was dwarfs, and my second army ... but it was Chaos Dwarfs.
I picked them because there my favorite fantasy race, be it in warhammer, books, or games. I just love the big fat beards, and remember, the longer the beard, the more wiser and experienced you are. And I just love imaging really drunk 4" foot muscular bearded fellas charging down a valley screaming there lungs out towards the enemy.

I love my Tau, I love the way they look, the way they play, and all of their fluff. I have tried many other armies, Nids, Eldar,Smurfs, Guard, but I always find myself preferring Tau. I love the challenge of an army that can't do melee and atleast used to be considered one of the worst armies (Even though Tau players won 3 out of 5 of my areas tournaments last summer.)
I also love orks, the look, the feel, the personality.

I really enjoy Eldar. I started them because I like the idea of speedy, elite soldiers that are absolute experts at their one job.
Now, I have a small DA force(which I got because I was sick and tired of 4+ armor saves, and figured that 2+ would be fun)
I'm also building Orks now, because I wanted to take some time to just have fun with a horde of models.

Well, I shelved my Eldar and DE when the 6th edition came out. I'm waiting for the new Eldar codex. Then I'll reconsider Eldar with a DE detachment.

When I started way back in 3rd, it was really only Dark Eldar for me.
I loved the models, I loved the fluff and the entire race just appealed to me at an instinctual level, especially the Haemonculi and their twisted Covens (even if they were a little one-trick-ponyish back then), which probably says something about my psyche that a therapist would have a field day with.
But I love the ingenuity, the freedom, the twisted genius of the Dark Eldar.
These days I have around 15-15,000pts of DE, and another 2-3k in storage waiting to be pulled out, and probably fully half of that is Coveny forces.
The Tau... well, the tau just look cool imo, and the sleek, slower, heavily armoured, hard hitting gunline makes a nice change from my Dark Eldat.

Started collecting IG in 3rd as I liked all the tanks, but before I got very deep into it, a friend offered me a really nice deal for a bunch of Necrons. I thought they looked fairly cool, and once I bought the codex I loved the fluff. I liked them for the same reasons I like my Nids - I like playing the bad guys and they are about as far removed from the good guys (Imperium - yes I know they really aren't that good, but in terms of the setting, they are the "home team") as you can get. There's no negotiation, no bartering, no common ground, they just want to wipe out life from every corner off the galaxy.

My first army was Space Marines, due to being able to acquire them inexpensively secondhand, but they weren't the one that really got me interested.
The army that really piqued my interest is IG, and that was the first one I built entirely from sprues instead of repurposing someone else's used models.

I chose DE because I've always liked that kinda evil-looking design, had no idea about WH40k's lore, or anything. And my DE's theme is Baron's street gang, which allows me an excuse to paint each unit differently, as they're just outlaws and rejects from other kabals/cults! My second army is Necrons, chosen not because of "OMG! OP" but that I want a foot-based army, and not a space marine variant! Funnily enough, this makes my 2nd army a direct opposite of what my 1st army is: It's slow and durable, and has little vehicles.

Ya know, funny thing is I've never really played much 40k. I mainly collected for aesthetic value and painting. I understand the rules and I know each army well enough to pick up and play, but I'm more of a fluff and lore kind of guy. I mainly collected orks and eldar. I love eldar but I always found them annoying to paint. Orks are just awesome to paint and I like the feel of them. Plus tactically they can do almost anything you want them to! So orks for me. Followed by eldar.

Imperial guard definitely give me the tingly-feeling in my special place (Talkin' bout the heart, girl)
They take colonial-style warfare of just marching forth firing volleys backed with big guns; and apply it in a setting where it is so inappropriately out of place, yet it works.
They're also stupidly over the top thanks to their command structure. That one little story in the 5th ed. Codex, how did it go?
The Hive city rebelled, so the siege regiment on station commenced shelling the city for ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS
And like after fifty years the hive surrendered, then after a hundred they lost all contact. Better shell them for another fitty just to be safe though.

IG, and it always will be.
Nothing beats looking down at that army of superhuman walking tanks across the board, and knowing you're about to beat them with a bunch of regular joes armed with laser pointers and tractor tanks.
Plus, nothing beats watching an expensive hero unit who's supposedly beaten entire armies on his own get killed by a 5pt guardsman with a lasgun
Before I got into the game, I was a huge lore nerd on 40k, and while all the other races seemed to have boring and predictable story arcs (I didn't know much about orks yet) IG always had really interesting ones. They were only human, so you knew that every character you met had a VERY high chance of dying at some point. They struggled, they had flaws, and that made every victory they had that much more awesome.

My first ever 40k thing was IG, had no idea what the heck i was going to do with the 2 infantry squads I got, but hey, I was curious. Looked cool, loved my metal Techpriest, and whammo I built an army after staring at them and thinking," I really really want to actually use these guys." The fluff/ novels that I've read are always enjoyable for me, and I liked the personality in each lil guardsman. And they aren't perfect (MEQ, lookin at you). That makes me feel better about using them in battle. For example, when all of the infantry squads I've lumped together die from one Razorwing missile it still makes sense. Personally, I think all the MEQ are kinda boring because they were bred for war and thats it, really.
In terms of what I dreamed of was thousands of Guardsmen angrily charging some arrogant Tau/MEQ and beating them to death with lasgun butts. Oh, and running over things with tanks.

Tyranids were my first 40k love over a decade ago and still are. I tried IG for a while but dear god are Guardsmen the most mind-numbingly boring things to paint and, as cool as their vehicles look I found painting boxes a grind as well. I couldn't do it. Tried Necrons and again, got bored with the painting. Not as soul grinding as painting Guardsmen but just bland and easy. Tried Tau and didn't really have any complaints, just got bored of them. Never got bored with Tyranids though!

I originally learned the of the 40k Universe from the Dawn of War games. Playing the first one I found myself enjoying the space marines because they were played to be the heroes. But there was only four races in that game. Then I played Dark Crusade and was introduced to the Tau and knew I found a keeper.
I love a good underdog story and, compartively speaking, Tau are the underdogs in this universe. It also helps that they're high-tech and I love the sleek look of their units. the modularity of their mecha and standoff long range firepower coupled with the flexibility and overall adaptivity of their tactics excites me to no end. I only hope someday I can fully exploit these traits of their army.

My first army was Tau. I basically follow all the feelings expressed above: I like the battlesuit aesthetic, I like the optimism and naiveté, I like how they contrast with the rest of the setting. I also like the fact that they are a more tactical army. You don't just charge in, balls-to-the-wall, with a Tau force. You have to maneuver, outflank, and outthink your opponent, and that seems like fun to me.
Unfortunately, the 40k rules set doesn't reward that kind of play, and our ancient codex no longer gives us the tools to achieve it. I got sick of losing all the time, so I started...
My second army, Blood Angels, was picked in part because I could get them cheap from a friend, and in part because they have a lot to recommend them. I love the doomed heroes who carry their own damnation inside them vibe. I like the visual contrast with Tau: ornate and ornamented, red and gold Blood Angels vs. the sleek, professional cream-and-green-camo Tau. I also wanted a force that played distinctly from the Tau, and you don't get a lot more distinct from Tau than fast vehicles, flying tanks, air-dropping screaming maniacs, and double-fisted dreadnaughts!
My third army is codex marines, painted as Blood Ravens. It started because I wanted to make a small allied Space Marine detachment for my Tau, but the project expanded when I realized just how many "tac" style marines - useless in a Blood Angels drop army - I owned. When I realized exactly how close I was to a full 1500 points, it was hard to resist making an army of it. I was also drawn in by the backstory of the Blood Ravens - a loyalist remnant of the Thousand Sons? Psyker leadership? Investigating mysteries and jacking relics from other chapters? Awesome! - and the playstyle of codex marines, which seems like a happy medium between "so tactical the game doesn't really support it" and "balls out!"
