Recently i've come across the problem of trying to decide what 40k army to get, now that I have finished my Eldar. But I have no idea. It seems that every 5 minutes I change my mind. I'm stuck in one awkward love triangle and I have no idea what to do! My mind is stuck between

Blood Angels

Space Wolves

Tyranids

Necrons

Orks

Imperial Guard

I just have no idea what to get! I've had this problem for almost a month and it's getting on my nerves. Please help me.

I vote Tyranid or Orks. Too many imperial players as is, help add diversity!

How about some info on the playstyle you're going for?

Or your budget.

I would look over why you want those armies and see if you can narrow it down a bit.

Once you narrow them down( or decide you can't) I would buy the codexes and read through them. See if that helps narrow them down some more. Then look up tactics for any remaining armies.

If after all this, you still have more than one army you want, buy small forces of those armies( like an HQ, two troops and one additional unit) and use them as allies with your current force or ally with each other. From there, you should be able to narrow it down by what you like most on the table and grow those armies(or army) slowly over time.

Well first off, what type of playstyle do you want to go for? Lots of tanks? Good melee? fast? lots of big beasties? Check out www.lexicanum.com for the fluff for each. Maybe instead of playstyle pick your next army based on what fluff you like. Maybe you want to play as a splinter of a major hive fleet? Or like the goofy nature and sheer hordes of orks? We need more info to help you

My budget is... low... very low. I'm only a teenager so I only get about 20 pounds pocket money a month. So a cheap army would be good. This might benifit the tyranids because I already have the codex and some models. I'm also looking for an army that's easy to use and paint. But then army's like imperial guard have amazing tanks.

If you already have some Tyranid models I'd go with that. They're not the cheapest army to be honest but if youre ok with scrounging ebay and craigslist/whatever you got in the uk you can build an army much cheaper. I like to buy metal models and strip them. I've gotten a Tyrant for $20, 3 Raveners for $20, etc.

Decide on what you want with the 2nd army, narrow it down.

When I was struggling to choose between BA and necron for my 2nd army, I asked myself "what am I looking for?", I know I want a foot list, so something with good survivalbility on foot would be nice, I wouldn't mind a few vehicles, but I want the majority to be on foot. Then I think about how I'd run each army, I know BA puts assault marines in troop slots, and I know I like the idea of jump assaults, so I'll run a lot of them, but then that would mean I'd be running a very similar army to my DE: a fast assaulty army... So I ended up choosing footcrons, as that would be the exact opposite of my current DE army, it will be slow, durable and very shooty.

So, what do you want from your 2nd army? Something very different from your eldar? Something that your gaming group doesn't have? Fluff? GW's love?

yea, but i'm not too fond of the tyranid play style or the way they look. They are a joy to paint though. I'm looking for an army with a bit more substance and fire power

Well, there goes orks and IG. Everytime I so much as look at the prices for those armies my wallet breaks into crying fits.

As much as I hate to say it, if budget is low, you'll have to look into a more elite army that relies on less models, which means *shuddes* spess mehreens.

Although you could probably do a nob biker army for fairly cheap, but that army won't earn you any friends in most stores

Necrons then, they're just metalic skeletons, so all you gotta do is give them a few coat of metalic paint, then they're "painted", and according to that thread, they're the 2nd cheapest army!

Edit: Or.. 3rd, numbers confuse me.

Hmm...guess I'll just do a detailed breakdown of each. If competition/tournaments is your thing, here is how it hashes out. (If anyone's army breaks any of these horrible horrible stereotyped classifications, please spare me the explanation; I don't care. This is just generally speaking to give the OP an idea.)

Playable:
Orks
Tyranids

Competitive:
Blood Angels

Very Competitive:
Imperial Guard
Space Wolves
Necrons

Ultra-Competitive:
Imperial Guard with Allies
Space Wolves with Allies
Necron Flyer-spam

Here is how the armies break down in terms of tabletop performance.

Blood Angels:
+Incredibly mobile. Like...stupid mobile.
+Solid HQ's, Elites, and FA's
+MEQ is always nice
+Good melta-availability
-Heavy Support is meh
-Average anti-air
-Heavily reliant on melee
+One of the cheaper armies listed

Space Wolves:
+Focus on highly custom, 'elite' units.
+Lots of different wargear
+Longfangs, dude
+Excellent Terminators (WolfGuard)
+Amazing HQ's, coupled with ability to take 4 per FOC
+Good shooters, great melee units
+Make excellent allies
+Good deathstars
+Lots of competitive builds
+Psykers are very strong, and very good anti-psyker
-Lots of distracting, lackluster codex choices
-Pretty one-dimensional playstyle
-VERY Expensive

Tyranids: (I only know Tyranids as an opponent)
+Able to field tons of powerful MC's
+Excellent at melee
-Poor (I'm talking Occupy-Wallstreet poor) shooting
-Zero anti-air
+Psyker-spam
-Tough to run competitively
+HQ's are excellent at dishing out pain
-Not a lot of options in playstyle and unit choices
-Expensive

Necrons: (Amagah Newcrons in the house boii)
+Most powerful lists in the game right now
+Unmatchable flyer-spam
+Amazing HQ's, very very powerful in CC
+Solid, killy, resilient troops
+-Decent elite choices
+FA is dominated by their crazy-good flyers
+-Decent Heavy Support
-A lot of whiners will call cheese on you (Ignore this)
-Only a couple viable builds
+Pretty cheap

Orks:
+Damn fun to play with or against
+Lots of variation in list-types
+Fun to paint
+Good all-around (vehicles, shooting, melee)
+Access to nob-bikers, one of the better deathstars in the game thanks to Look Out Sir abuse.
+-Semi-compettive
+-Average anti-air
-Vehicles die pretty easy
-Troops aren't very mobile
-Expensive

Imperial Guard:
+Quite competitive, and make for good allies
-Crap HQ's
-Crap Elites
+Solid, solid Troop choices with a lot of variation available
+FA is decent due to flyer accessibility
+Hard to beat Heavy Support. Tons of options, and just about all of them are good/great
+Chimeras are one of the better transports in game
+Troops can take tons of special weapons
+Solid as Mech, Gunline, or Aircav
+Good AA
-Troops get shot to bits without cover
-Quite expensive

Hope this helps, bud, and best of luck choosing.
-TheCaptain

Well...that's necrons, but cheap and easy to paint aren't great criteria for choosing an army that you intend to use for a while. Better to build up a great looking, fun to play army over time than to grab one with the money you have on hand and slap on a 2-tone paintjob.

your tips have really helped guys! My final question is can someone give me a list of armies from cheapest to most expensive? I'm starting to narrow the armies down now

Depends on the list you decide to run, dawg.

Grey Knight Purifier spam is a pretty averagely priced army. Grey Knight Draigowing is cheap as dirt.

The same idea carries over to just about every army.

Only thing that can be told is that Orks, Tyranids, and any non-deathstar foot army will be stupid expensive.

Honestly. it sounds like you want Necrons. You want easy to use, high firepower, easy to paint, cheap army. They are this, incarnate. Every other army will be a couple of these, while sacrificing one or two for another trait.

Just a few small corrections here. We have no flyers in the FA slot. Wraiths, are the dominant choice in that slot. Our flyers are either a Dedicated Transport (Night Scythe) or Heavy support (The Doomscythe) Necrons also have more than Decent heavy support I'd say. Spyders are some of the best point per point MCs in the game, Annihilation barges are fantastic, and of course we have the Doomscythe. The Monolith is a poor competitive choice, and the Doomsday Ark is pretty decent now, but you can get a Doomscythe for the same cost.

I would say Necrons probably have the most variety, when it comes to Competitive builds.

this helps. But how about an actuall list?

A low budget would rule out Orks, Guard, and Nids. One of the Marine chapters would be cheaper than Necrons I reckon; Wolves more than likely would be the cheapest.

holy sh!t that's alot! I think that rules them out. I think that as I have some nids, i'll build a small army of them. Maybe 1500points, then Necrons after that. Thank you guys! Also, go check out my tyranid paint job on my account. Please rate i'll post the pictures tonight, but just to let you know i'm only 13, so the only technique I used was drybrushing. Also, bypassing the censorship filter by putting a "!" instead of an I in "Sh!t" doesn't make it okay. For future reference.

Hi, I see you're new to IG...

You know the battleforces GW sells? The hundred dollar boxes that usually get you a couple troop choices, a transport, and some other goody?

Ours buys you ONE, FRIGGIN, TROOP CHOICE. And that's it at it's most barebones, cheapest incarnation. And a sentinel because, LOL sentinels are good yo (they aren't sadly) Even if you go "leafblower" (aka vets in chimeras) you're dropping $30 for the guard squad, $35 for the transport, and probably 5to 8 bucks to get all the special weapons you'll need.

Seriously. If money is even the slightest issue, do not pick them. They're the reason I'm about to default on my college loans right now

Yeah, you can buy them used, but that takes all the fun out of it to be honest.

HOWEVER, if your store is cool with 3rd party models, they get a lot cheaper. For the love of god, check with your store first before you go and buy 150 UAMC marines or something, but most people are usually cool with it.

For example, 10 cadians are $30 a box. Defiance Games sells 24 UAMC marines (think aliens colonial marines) for $30. You can get some decent Wargames factory troopers for 18 per $20, even if they do look like crap, and there are countless other options you can go with.
