hello dakka,
while working on some sniper scouts, I noticed that each has a hefty hunk of plastic around where the inside of the elbow would be, between the arm and the rifle stock. it's not a miscast; it's just the way the mold was made. unclear to me if it's meant to be structural or not, but it's certainly not anatomically correct I'm really not sure what to do with it. I considered trying to cut if off, but that seemed a bit drastic and I was afraid it might weaken the arm. so, that leaves painting... making it the same color as the cloth or armor on the arm would look odd. same goes for making it the same metallic color as on the rifle stock. I could paint it black or something in the hopes that it would make it fade out... ?
anyway, I have no idea how to treat this sort of thing. I've seen it on other models as well, between tabards and legs and such.
suggestions?

I built some scouts a month ago and I never noticed that. You have to look for it to see it when the model is finished. I would just leave it.

I would paint it black. That's what I do when I come across parts like that... It doesn't have to be black but just something that lets the other meant-to-be visible parts stand out more.

Look to see how it looks on the finished model, if it offends then cut it out.

I've got a box of scout snipers on the shelf waiting for me to have time to build them. Hadn't seen this yet, but I just checked it out, 3 of the 5 on the sprue have this problem. I don't feel great bout leaving it... I'd like to see pics of how they turn out.
Considering filing it down with a triangle file rather than applying a sheering force with a knife that might distort the weak section.

You can get away with alot if you use a sharp/new blade on your hobby knife.
if it breaks a little plastic glue will fix it

It depends how it looks when it's together. If it looks weird together, I might trim it off. If it doesn't look weird, I might paint it the same colour as the rest of the clothing. Sometimes you can paint things black, often when you have something like a loincloth you get a random chunk of plastic between the leg and the cloth and painting it black helps bring out the "true" shape of the loincloth. But sometimes painting it black won't work if it has a coloured background. So yeah, it depends how it looks when it's together.
My plastic IG (the snap fit variety) had weird chunks of plastic between the arm and the gun, but it looked reasonably ok just to paint it black because the gun was black as well. Otherwise I might have painted it the same colour as the clothing to blend in with that.
Looking at the scout sniper though, it looks like you might be able to clean it with a knife. I'd have to see it once it's together (even if it's just held together with blutac or something).

Cut it out if you're anal about it. Simpler, cover it up, by adding a dangly trophy to obscure it. Even simpler, choose not to care, and simply paint it black, and it will blend away as if it were shadow. I haven't seen the scouts in a while, I wouldnt be surprised if that's actually a piece of cape, and not so much an artifact of casting. Doublecheck the models to see if there's one it fits best with...

To glimpse the future, you must look to the past and understand it. Names may change, but human behavior repeats itself. Prophetic insight is nothing more than profound hindsight.
It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from. |
