Okay, for the new Necron army I was building I thought of this tactic. I always loved the idea of zombiebots marching in ranks and files, creating a massive Phalanx of Gauss fire. I'll take large squads of Warriors and set them up in block of troops, all concentrated in one area. Maybe a unit or two of Immortals will stand in the front lines. Behind the Immortals will stand the Lychguards for counter-charging. Since I'll only have access to short-range firepower, I'll take Imotekh for his Stormlord rule. I feel that it should allow me to march up to the enemy's face. Some Deep Striking Monolith to distract the enemy and maybe even a Loyal Court to get some fancy wargear (Solar Pulse I feel is worth it). I mean, with Necron's Gauss rule, I think that solid blocks of Warriors will be able to outshoot anything close range, both infantry and vehicles. The enemy wouldn't be able to bombard me from afar and any Deep Striking units will be looking down at 60+ Gauss weapons. Since Warriors are cheaper now, perhaps I can even max them out in my Troop choice.

Granted, this may not be the most competitive list but I would love to see the face of my opponents who just realized that they have to fight blocks of robots that can't be shot at. I can identify only 2 problems for this list at the moment. Horde armies and point cost. I don't have templates or enough volume to handle 30 Boyz and I think such composition would no doubt cost a lot of points (and money... but we all play 40k. We don't care about spending moar right?)

So what do you think?

I've seen a derivative of this list that had shield-toting Lychguard as the front line, soaking up fire with their shields and providing cover saves to everything behind them.

One thing you might want to consider are Resurrection Orb Necron Lords to support your blocks and keep them up.

I've dabbled in this strat before. I reccomend a few things

1) make sure Imotek has a chronotek with him, that re-roll is worth every point.
2) march the warriors in civil-war-esqu lines, with blocks, half the unit wont get rapid fire, or get to fire at all, a line 2-3 warriors deep corrects for this.
3) res orbs! A block of 20 warriors with a resorb can withstand an absurd amount of firepower, especially if you roll well
4) combat lords, with MSS, orb, 2+ and scythe, will protect your warriors in melee(challenge often)
5) Harassment units: Make sure you have DS deathmarks/wraiths/Destroyer lord and maybe some scarabs or tomblades, they get to the enemy first and take out any atrillery and distract the enemy from the approaching doom of the phalanx

Exalted Brings up good points all around.
Orb lords in your blocks will help, get something in their face quickly to ensure your troops arrive more safely.

If you could afford two units of wraiths, send them in front as a screening force to get in your enemy's face, soak their fire, then use the troops to sweep aside what they cant.
Lychguard can do this too, but I would consider using a VOD cryptek to zap them across the field quickly into combat to maximize their use

How would this list handle fliers?

That's my biggest question. Like it or not, fliers are a part of the game now, and even with a 20 strong Warrior block in rapid fire range, only 6-7 (6.66~) will hit, and of those, only 1-2 (1.11~) will glance on average. This is assuming all of the warriors are in rapid fire range, all of them are alive, and the flier has no saves from wargear or evasive maneuvers.

I love the idea of the old fashioned warrior phalanx, I would love to play against such a list, but it has such a hard counter to it that I worry about the validity. Even two fliers could lay down some serious hurt on this list.

It is possible to deal with flyers simply through model count and durability. Look at what Tony Kopach just did at NOVA. He had ~120 models in his SW/IG foot horde, and lost 40+ of them in one round of shooting from Neil Gilstrap's flyer spam army on turn 2. He kept walking, got onto the objectives, and won on the mission, because the units inside the flyers were not durable or deadly enough to take them away from him, despite all the damage the flyers did.

So far the only concern raised with the Phalanx was:

Flyers
Cost
Horde

I am assuming that pure number of shots and bodies will be able to mitigate the damage that Flyers and the Horde will deal.

I dont know, but it seems to me the ever popular green tide would be a tough matchup for this. They can survive the fire and trounce you in melee. With so many bodies on both sides I dont think you could avoid combat.

Leechguard are not a good counter-assault unit because they not good at assault period. Wraiths are the only good true assault unit in the Codex.

And Monolith's are too expensive to be distractions. If they don't have a specific role to play worth the points you pay for them, then they have no business being in the list.
