As a whippersnapper I spent many an hour in a confined space with a few cans of chaos black and sea of boltgun painting up my Black Templar army. God knows how I afforded it or survived the solvent fumes but life was good and no force could stand in my way of my crusade...that was until a poorly constructed shelf decided to deep-strike directly on to my marines smashing them to pieces. On that day my childhood ended, the obliterated marines went in the bin and I vowed never to paint again.

However as I'm sure many of you have discovered for yourselves, one does not simply quit warhammer. So 9 years later I was lured back in by the new Dark Eldar and Necron ranges but as sure as night follows day I was inevitably going to end up collecting marines again.

I didn't feel like going for Black Templars again since it would be disrespectful to the memory of the victims of the great 2003 shelf collapse, so I've decided try something a little more colourful, Imperial Fists.

This guy is my first quick and dirty attempt at an Imperial Fist and as you can see what I've ended up with is an orange tactical marine, now orange is a nice colour but it isn't yellow...not good.

I think I've solved the problem by using a brighter yellow base colour and a damn sight fewer washes, the colour on the left should be fine with a little bit of highlighting.

As well as a tactical squad I'm also working on this little extravagance I picked up on ebay. In my "old age" I'm far more interested in painting rather than playing so I can't resist having a crack at less common models even if my paintjobs don't quite do them justice.

I'm going to try and get all my models on ebay so what I paint in future will be limited entirely by what's on offer. At the moment I'm waiting for a tactical squad, a 2008 Gamesday captain and the bulk lot below to be delivered

1 x Space Marine Command Squad
1 x Space Marine Techmarine with Servo Harness & Servitors
1 x Space Marine Commander
1 x Captain Sicarius with Lightning Claws
2 x Space Marine Terminator Captain
1 x Space Marine Terminator Librarian
1 x Space Marine Librarian in Power Armour
1 x Space Marine Terminator Chaplain
1 x Space Marine Chaplain in Power Armour
1 x Space Marine Master Of The Flee

Needless to say that if I do decide to make a battle worthy force I won't need to worry about buying an more HQ's for a while

The first "proper" marine is finished and I'm pretty happy with how the new colour scheme has turned out, for a starters it's actually yellow which is an improvement.

The decision to go with a power fist and combi melta was a purely aesthetic choice, I'm not entirely sure how he's going to reload but that's part of the 40k charm. I took the easy way out by giving him a helmet rather than one of the angry bald heads so I didn't have to deal with my old nemesis eyeballs.

Now that I've got a colour scheme that works I can crack on with the rest of the squad before my ebay goodies arrive.

Looking mighty good! The orange looks like a good base for the yellow to build upon, it creates a really rich effect. I love it! Nice combi-melta as well, it looks legit.

You've got a good solid yellow there, with nice shading you'll be fine! Please do something about those mould lines, though.

The project log lives!

I haven't had much time to paint recently and what time I have spent with brush has been wasted working on a thousand things at once so progress has been slow. However the tactical squad is all finished bar the shouting

Eagle eyed viewers will have spotted that there are only 9 marines in the squad for now. I've decided to keep my original space tangerine, he stands on my desk as constant visual reminder of past mistakes. Plus he'll be a handy reference if I go mad and decide to paint an orange army.

My ebay orders have been arriving in a steady stream. As I get to grips with ebay I'm quickly realising that if I buy every bargain going I'm going end up penniless, the phone app is a constant temptation at work. I'm amazed at how many people buy perfectly good models, dunk them in emulsion and sell them for a loss, not that I'm complaining

I had intended to dismantle and reposition this tactical squad but it turns out that rather than using glue the previous owner forged these models in the fires of mount doom. Since I don't have ready access to lava they'll have to stay just how they are.

As testament to my lack of organisation I got half way through painting the angry chap above before getting distracted by the spiffy looking techmarine that arrived.

10 minutes of working with a hefty metal model like this and I was longing for a nice flimsy finecast version. God knows how I'm going to get his back pack to stay on, I might have to ask the guy who sold me his tactical squad what his secret is. I couldn't care less about the servitors that came with him, they're just too damn static for my liking. I harvested their heavy bolters and power packs before ditching their bodies, pretty much the exact same treatment they'd get in the 40k universe.

While those models were drying I also started on a command squad, two chaplains, two librarians and a master of the fleet, truly I have a short attention span.

Pretty much the only model I haven't touched yet is this chap, I can't decide whether to paint him as an Ultramarine for kicks or convert him into an Imperial Fist. The third option is to avoid the decision all together and just throw him back on ebay for profit.

On a non power armoured note I also need to finish my Wraiths and start prepping a Night Scythe, sleep is rapidly becoming a luxury.

And so endeth this rambling post.

Working on one model at a time is definitely the way forward, this is what I managed to get done tonight before hitting the hay.

He's still a work in progress but I'm happy with how he's turning out. I need to work out how to cover up his left shoulder though, the previous owner of the model kindly took it upon them-self to file away half of the crux terminatus.

Thanks for the positive feedback people, the terminator chaplain is finished!

I intentionally kept the yellows really bright as a contrast to his armour and to help link him to the rest of my troops.

I ended up covering his trashed shoulder pad with one of the loincloths from my painfully understocked bits box. My micro-calligraphy isn't up to much but it does the job. Photographed up close like this he's a bit shabby and the shell casings on the base are too big but at arms length he looks the business

Flying in the face of the project log's title I've moved from black to blue and started working in earnest on my librarians.

I had to a little bit of work on the dark vengeance model to cover up his DA iconography. Being lazy I used another loincloth to cover his left shoulder pad and threw a fist full of purity seals on his right greave. It wasn't until after I'd sprayed him black that I notice the sword motif embossed on his chest so I had to cover that with some GS, the winged skull is there to hide my shoddy sculpting.

Your yellow comes at a perfect time. I just finished building a DAKKAjet from scratch and I play a Bad Moonz Horde. So naturally I have to paint it yellow, and wasnt really sure how I was going to go about it since I didnt want just a flat yellow paint job.

There was me worried people weren't interested and all of a sudden I'm snowed under with stuff to reply to.

Awesome chaplain, but the librarians kinda look space wolvish.

If you're talking about the light blue armour I totally agree, I went a little over the top with my Fenrisian Grey highlighting. After I posted that picture I hit the force-axe librarian with a couple of layers of Asurmen Blue wash to add depth to his armor and Turmiel was treated to a nice relaxing Dettol bath before I take another run at him.

Beautiful yellow, could you possibly post a tutorial on how you do it?

I'd love to tell you that it's a deeply complex time consuming process requiring pro-skills, but I can't. I'm a lazy painter so like all my schemes the technique I used to get my yellow is quick and dirty and relies on washes to do a lot of the work.

1.) Skull White spray to prime.
2.) Give the model a couple of thin coats of Flash Gitz Yellow, two thin layers is definitely better than a single thick one.
3.) Give the whole model a thin coat of Reikland Fleshshade making sure to get it in all the recesses.
4.) Use Flash Gitz Yellow to tidy up any blotchy areas created by the previous wash.
5.) Mix Flash Gitz Yellow with Skull White and use that to pick out raised edges (not sure of the paint ratios, I mix it by eye every time)
6.) Last of all give the whole model a thin layer of Casandora Yellow wash making sure not to let it pool together.

Apologies if I've mixed up any of the old and new paint names some habits die hard.

Nice I would presume from the librarian that you have the rest of DV? are you converting them?

Turmiel is actually the only model I have from the DV set because a. he doesn't have too many DA icons to hide and b. people are pretty much giving him away on ebay. The other models in the set all seem to be smothered in swords and wings and I don't have the bits box or patience to do a good job converting them.

I did chuckle at the "great shelf collapse of 2003."

You sir, are a monster

And because every post deserves a picture I thought I throw in a quick snap of my wip company champion.

I cracked out the models after work today only to realise that I'd run out of spray paint which meant yellows were a no go.

Since I couldn't paint I decided to have a go at doing something with the black reach terminators I've been putting off. These models are a bit of a mixed bag, on one hand they're very cheap but on the other they're less dynamic than Stewart Downing. Rather than leave them as they were I played around a little to try and make them more interesting.

Naturally I started with the sergeant who I decided to give an arms out-stretched "come and get me" stance. If he's brave/stupid enough not to wear a helmet in then why not go the whole hog and make yourself a bigger target.

Next up was this gentleman with his oversized chainfist, I know it's a little on the big side but I kinda like it. At this size it also seems more practical for finding out how the inside of tanks work.

This chap is going to be a standard bearer so I sliced off his stormbolter and lumped it on the back of his fist. The bolter fist looked a little silly hanging limply at the hip so I clipped the arm off at the elbow and spun it round like it's in use. To ease painting the banner and pole will be a last minute addition once the rest of the model is finished.

This pose was the result of a rush of blood to the head during a small positional "tweak", a snip here turned into a cut there and before I knew it I had a legless terminator. The pose he's in now isn't really in keeping with the rest of the squad but what the hell, obviously he has dreams of being a CC terminator.

Last of all is this depressingly vanilla exhibit, after messing around with the other 4 models I was all out of creative juices by the time I got to this guy. I'll have to get the old thinking cap on to work out what I'm going to do with him.

The next step is to fill out all the joints with GS so the models are ready for paint, I'm rubbish with GS so it could take a while.

Just a quick update.

The terminators are green stuffed, Turmiel is looking 10 years younger after 48 hours in dettol and Commander Beakie has reported for duty after lying around in pieces for weeks.

If anyone has a good technique for a nice bright Librarian blue it would be much appreciated as I'll be picking up some paint after work today.

Lo and behold an actual finished model! Bearing in mind this is a PAINTING & modelling blog I though it'd be a novelty for me to upload a painted model after a few too many snaps of grey plastic in my previous posts.

Before anyone asks why he hasn't got any eyes it's not my fault, he blinked every time I took a photo.

I've slipped back into the habit of getting nowhere because I keep jumping from one detail to another, first I'll paint all yellow armor...no wait maybe I'll work on red bits...right after I paint the fabric sections...or I could finish that Techmarine...The end result? A whole lot of time spent for very little outcome, I've barely scratched the second tactical squad.

I took another crack at Turmiel using a different scheme for his armour this time round, I'm going for Macragge Blue as a base with Altdorf Guard Blue highlights, hopefully it'll turn out better than my previous attempt. I'm undecided as to whether to stick with the leather overcoat I've given him or replace it with something similar to my Master of the Fleet's cloak

Worst case scenario, how many times can you strip a model

I REALLY want to get all the models in the group photo finished before my Mk1 Vindicator turns up and catches my eye with it's retro beauty.

I came to the same conclusion so Turmiel is taking another Dettol swim as I type, he is quickly becoming my stripping guinea pig (which sounds a little odd.)

I'm happy with how the MotF is turning out but lets not get carried away It wasn't until I posted that pic that I noticed the big pink blob right in the middle of his cloak.

I'll probably put some more work into his sword and do a bit of sprucing up here and there but the Termi sergeant is pretty much done.

I'm finding that painting the terminators is far less forgiving than a regular marines, it takes a lot more work to get all those large flat areas of colour looking clean.

The flag on the base came about because I didn't want to waste the excess greenstuff I mixed up when I was filling the gaps in the termi's joints. It's meant to look like it belongs to the Iron Warriors in keeping with the Imperial Fist fluff.

Nostalgia Attack!

Got home from work today to find this little treat had arrived earlier than expected. Showing a trademark lack of self control I decided to steam straight in and start putting it together.

Construction was well under way when I noticed I hadn't trimmed down the excess parts at either end of the hull, once my heart started beating again and I regained conciousness I managed to rectify the problem and bodge it back together. Most of the metal parts meet up pretty well now but it's taken a fair amount of reshaping and filing. The only real issue is a 1 mil gap between the top hatch plate and the main body of the tank, that'll definitely need some green stuff because at the moment you can see through the one side of the tank and out of the other.

As a bonus the kit came with plenty of spare parts so I'll be keeping an eye out for any rogue trader bargains in need of a bit of TLC. I like the idea of the Imperial Fists taking extra special care of their ancient siege weapons.

I've also become the proud owner of 4 DV bikers, they don't really fit in with my idea of an Imperial Fist force but they were an absolute steal

The vindicator is coming along nicely, at first I painted it using my usual method but it didn't look quite right so I decided to rough it up a bit.
This is my first proper attempt at making a vehicle look beaten up, back in my BT days I subscribed strictly to a "drybrush it with boltgun metal" policy.

All the blogs I read recommend sponge weathering so that's what I gave a spin. I started by sponging the whole tank with chaos black trying to focus on any edges, once that was done I partially filled in any large black sections with scorched brown followed by mithril silver. With a couple of washes I think it's going to look pretty good.

I haven't included the tank commander that came in the box because his proportions look all wrong compared to regular marines, his arms are too thin, his hand is freaking huge and he fits so snugly into his hatch it looks more like a rubber ring.

This stage is about 2 steps in from a 4 step yellow. Dry brush yriel yellow, then dry brush flash gitz on them. You can then also dry brush Hexos Palesun and glaze them in lamentors if you want even more stuff. The effect is quite good.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a shot and post up the results. I've looked at Lamentors Yellow on GW website but I'm not sure quite how it differs from a standard wash, I'm worried a "glaze" might leave me with Shiny marines.
