New ‘RoboCop’ suit revealed in first photo from the remake
By Matt McDaniel

Part man. Part machine. All cop. New look.

Filming on the remake of the much-beloved 1987 sci-fi action flick "RoboCop" recently began in Toronto, and ComingSoon.net grabbed the first photos of the updated costume for the cyborg crimefighter. The bulky, chrome look of the original has been replaced by a trimmed-down silhouette with a black matte finish. It does have a helmet that is open only at the mouth like the first suit, but this one also leaves his right hand exposed. See more at ComingSoon.net.

Joel Kinnaman unmasked (Photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage)That's Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman (TV's "The Killing") inside the costume as Alex Murphy, a gunned-down Detroit police officer reborn as an unstoppable robotic force for justice. This will be the American debut for director José Padilla, who previously made the acclaimed "Elite Squad" films in his native Brazil. The remake also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton.

Like Peter Weller, who played the character in the first film, Kinnaman is tall and lanky, which is important so that when he's inside the suit it doesn't appear too cumbersome or unwieldy. Reportedly, Arnold Schwarzenegger was originally considered to play the role the first time around, but his size would have made moving in the suit impossible. Schwarzenegger later teamed up with "RoboCop" director Paul Verhoeven for "Total Recall," which also got a recent remake.

The suit in the original took designer Rob Bottin ten months to construct at a cost of nearly $1 million (the budget for the entire film was only around $13 million). There were actually multiple versions of the costume made, with some painted to look damaged after the climactic battle scene. Weller said it got so hot in the suit he lost upwards of three pounds a day just from sweating.

Fan reaction to the new suit has been mixed, with some Internet commenters saying he looks more like Christian Bale's Batman than RoboCop. Perhaps the filmmakers felt like "Iron Man" has captured the market on shiny robotic suits, so they decided to make it less reflective. Also, online reviews of early drafts of the script suggest RoboCop goes through several different upgrades through the film, so this might not be the final iteration of his new look.

We'll see just how well this new "RoboCop" can serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law when it hits theaters on August 9, 2013.

Watch the trailer for the original 'RoboCop':

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Looks like the stuff they used on the newest Bat Mobile.

Meh. As long as we get the line "Put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply!" I'll watch it.

Like the new suit. More streamline. Less air friction. Much bigger impact when he hits the ground when thrown out the building.......

Maybe its because Im such a fan of the original, but the new suit just looks weird to me. Though Im curious to see how Joel Kinnaman does on it. Because I liked him in the Killing

I miss the 80's shoulders that were almost Space Marine in comparison to this new suit. Looks like a Batman prototype suit.

I hope, really hope, the reboot doesn't suck. There've been too many remakes that have: Footloose remake (crap), Nightmare on Elm Street remake (crap), Total Recall (crap)... and the list goes on...

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Yet they keep making them.

Any idea if Ed-209 will make an appearance?

I just don't think this movie needed to be remade... the original still holds up, even though it was designed to be a 1980s period piece.

And I am not a fan of the Guyver suit.

Yep. Looks bigger in comparison to the tank.

The old suit is way better. I agree with everybody who thinks they shouldn't be remaking films which are already great - and that includes Robocop (one of the first films I ever bought on VHS). It seems there's been a deluge of remakes recently - even of films which aren't that old (spiderman/batman) - it's disappointing that they can't come up with more original stuff with the wealth of science fiction/fantasy material that's out there in the form of books/comics/video & table top games etc. No wonder I've lost interest in visiting the cinema in recent years

Batman really did need the reboot, though. And Spiderman was only done because the studio was going to lose the licensing rights if they didn't.

EDIT: And actually, Spiderman really needed the reboot too, after that Godawful third one with Poochy, the New Goblin.

So films that were good but had bad sequels need reboots? How does this not apply to RoboCop???

Not a huge fan of the xmen suit. It looks too much like a superhero costume and not enough like the machine body of cyborg.

Batman was continuously successful in other properties though. Robocop was a movie franchise, but not much more (that said, I love cheesy 80s action movie remakes, I don't mind this one at all).

The article makes note that RoboCop will go through various "upgrades" throughout the film. There is a possibility that this is an earlier version of his body and that the ultimate version will look more like what we saw from the 80s.

Two animated shows, two live action shows, action figure lines supporting them, various video games and comic series including one by Frank Miller ... but nothing enduring or even really successful. This is exactly the kind of nut producers are going to try and crack.

Hrm. You have an excellent point. I had completely forgotten that there were sequels to Robocop.

I guess I differentiate the two in that I view Robocop as a singular film, and choose to pretend that the latter two do not exist, in the same sense that I prefer to think of Indiana Jones 4 and Die Hard 4 as not existing, either.

Spiderman & Batman, on the other hand, I view as an ongoing series of films, not unlike its comics which were not one-shot story arcs.

EDIT: Oh Goddammit! Now I just remembered what the content was of the third Robocop film, and its made-for-TV movies, as well. WHY DID YOU MAKE ME REMEMBER THOSE? WHY? Arrgh!

Remakes are recent only if by recently we mean 'since we started telling stories'. Remakes, reboots, and sequels existed long before the moving picture.

The reason for most film remakes though is that the people who saw the original when they were 17 are now 37 and the studios would like those who are 17 now to be new fans. In other words, if you saw the original Robocop in the theaters you aren't the primary target for the remake.

I want this to be good, but I want it to be the kind of 'bad' good that the originals were

The suit looks a bit weird and far too dynamic, also I have the funniest feeling that we may end up with 'The Batman Voice' suits like this cause on the actor

'I'm like a man with a fork, in a world of soup.'

This just may lead to Robocop being an agile cyborg commando, rather than the invulnerable tank he has been in the past. That carapace armor is designed for mobility. If they pull it off, it will be as genre changing as fast zombies.

Unfortunately, it is very, very likely to be silly.

WTF?

How many years has it been since the original? And the best they can come up with is Batman's spare suit and a spaceballs helmet?

The original is a million times more interesting: it actually looks like a robot.

Not impressed.
