I think Sisters are better off with swords than with power mauls, myself. Just suits Sisters better based off of their theme and the way they've been depicted in art and models-- only a rare few use weapons that aren't swords.

Though I could be talked in to power spear + storm shield as a unit...

It would be one of the few units in the game armed with power lances. Sadly those are underwhelming rules-wise. +1 Strength and AP3 on the charge only, with the usual being standard Strength and AP4.

I've always liked the power maul, was a favorite fig of mine back before they separated the power weapons up. I'm not entirely stuck on it though. For me its more about a troop choice that actually does something different than just giving sisters "novices" counts as scouts. I like my Celestians with power weapons though.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...

I have been thinking: GW likes to make money, and currently one of their favorite ways of making more money is to add more stuff to/make old stuff compatible with 30k, which leads to this question:

How would you retcon the Sisters' origin story so that they could be officially used during the Horus Heresy?

I wouldn't. But if I had to link sisters to the Horus Heresy somehow (aside from being proof that they're superior to marines in terms of trustworthiness), I would link their founding to the Sisters of Silence somehow-- such as the surviving members of the Sisters of Silence settling on San Leor.

It’s a really interesting to me what became of that organisation and yeah a link to the present Sisterhood would be quite intriguing. Perhaps the survivors continued but without access to blank recruits evolved into a completely different institution? It’s very much described as a back water cult when Vandire finds them but he must have seen something unusual to decide to make them his personal guard (and entertainers, enforcers etc)?

Maybe with GW apparently looking at HH era forces we might see Sisters of Silence rather than Sororitas – although both would be awesome

I'd prefer no tangible link to be honest. The Sisters are a creation of the faithful Imperium as it has evolved, not a throwback to the HH eras.

Yeah. Like I said, I wouldn't provide a link.

I would make mention of heresy era groups that were converted to the imperial truth and formed monastic orders that fight alongside the Militias. You could then simply point players to the Imperial Militia list and options that allow them to take power armor and bolters on their grenadiers.

I would have units called Sisters of Silence with BSS statlines, 3+ for Power Armor, bolter and chainsword, with a 1+ DtW vs any Psychic power targeting them or activated by a unit within LD inches. Unit size is 5 to 20, with the option to purchase HB, HF, MM or ML for every 5 SoS. Option to trade bolter for Stormshield and chainsword for power weapon.

Add to that a Veteran SoS that extends the DtW range by 6", with +1 T and the option for some sort of special weapon or an Eviscerator.

I would not link the Sororitas to the Heresy-era at all. They are Lady Not-Appearing-In-This-Era.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Ok, I clearly got to this thread a bit late, but it is Sisters related, so I at least want to put my own 2 cents in.

What do the SoB need? Essentially, IMO, they need more. There are very few options and versatility in the current incarnation of the army, perhaps the most limited incarnation they have ever had, and certainly one of the most limited armies in the current environment (I believe, discounting those armies that exist primarily as attachments to other armies*).

This thread is full of great ideas on how to 'expand' the options for the army, and I'm personally a fan of an expansion that adds both more 'Sister' specific options, as well as 'Ecclesiastical' options. Ideally the final result should be a list that allows for a Sisters Only army, and a Priests & Militia style army.

The Militia Unit is a pretty good idea. Such a lightly armed and armoured unit has the added ability to be easily re-thematiced to be used with a variety of models (a mob of cultists can easily become Schola Progenia field trainees, or Sister Sydney style novices). I also really like the idea of Sisters (and possibly priests) 'inspiring' other troops. Possibly in martyrdom, possibly with choir.

Also vehicles; the army needs more of them. As much as I dislike the Taurox, that class of vehicle would be a good start. Possibly a re-imagined repressor.
