I seem to remember reading that it hypothesised that there is a missing link in the astartes tanks. The heavy landraider and Light predator. That their are schematics for a supposedly Medium battle tank.

So let's hypothesie what this could be, what designs could it be based off, what might it look like or its capabilities be?

Anyone else remember this obscure piece of fluff and able to offer an opinion as to its nature?

The Predator is a medium tank - the 'light tank' of the Astartes would be the Razorback. Whether there is one in between I know not, but it's a possibility - perhaps we'll see later on when Forgeworld have worked on their Heresy stuff some more.

There is a 'one up' from the Land Raider though - the Fellblade (in case you hadn't seen it)

I think it would look like a more chunky predator (if thats possible) with wider tracks. the turret would have a bigger weapon, something along the lines of the battlecannon in the Leman Russ conqurer, ie a scaled down version. front armour 13 side armour 12.

i always found it a little frustrating that the predators are so 'light' compared the the imperial guard, and yes i know they are all about speed and quick insertions etc but that does not translate to the tabletop

It just doesn't translate onto the table top.

But the Predator is a faster and lighter vehicle then a LRBT. In all truth it is a medium tank.

Huh, a half way decent looking 40k tank..color me surprised. It still has some flaws ( to me) but by far the best looking 40k tank i have yet seen.

I would honestly like a 13/12 Vindicator. it is a big tank with a big gun! why is it only armored on the side?!

I want something like this: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Events/Typhon.html

SM tanks are designed to be light and transportable (even a Land Raider is fairly compact for a vehicle of its size/power). A Predator Annihilator has x4 Lascannons, much more firepower then vehicles of comparable size. Thus they don't really use Medium Tanks.

The Land Raider has no comparable equal of the same class. I'd consider it a Heavy Tank, as the next thing up is a Superheavy.

Even the Leman Russ is smaller and less powerful than it.

The Predator cannot be considered a light tank because that category is reserved for the Rhino, Razorback, Hellhound and Chimera.

The Predator sits solidly as a medium tank - which can deal significant damage and sustain a moderate amount of punishment, but cannot sustain heavy amounts of return fire.

However you wish to class it. I am still sure their is a variant of tank that is between the predator and land raider, or at least a fluff piece hypothesised there was.

If you go back far enough in the Epic rules the Leman Russ and Predator were equivalent vehicles aimed at different targets becasue of differing weapon loadout. Guard armies could field companies of Predators. Nowadays I would subscribe to the view that Predators serve the general ned for Marines to be fast and hard hitting, not necessarily with heavy vehicle armour. If they ened something survivable, they have the (even increasing) range of Land Raider variants, or Terminators of they can't fit tanks onto the target.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

...A Predator is lighter than a Leman Russ because it's a medium tank intended for mobility and close support and the Leman Russ is a heavy tank intended for artillery support, people.

If there's a step between the Predator and the Land Raider in terms of armor it's probably the Vindicator. Other than that I don't advise looking for another tank anytime soon, there are more pressing problems with the current state of 40k (*cough*Tau/Eldar/DarkAngels/Daemons/BlackTemplars*coughcough*) that really need to be addressed long before we go back and consider whether the Space Marines really have enough models.

I'd like a light tank.

Something in FA thats squadronable, thats not a Landspeeder.

Something that is Fast, has AV12, comes in squadrons, and maybe has some nifty redeployment ability. Like maybe the ability to make a Flat Out move after its shot.

For the record, the Imperium has entirely too many vehicles already in overlapping battlefield roles. They don't need another one.

Hum, someone looked at the Ares and went "Hum, how can we fit that into the pre-heresy era in such a way that we can make kit for it that will still allow us to bring out another kit for the Ares later on. I know, lets stick a big-ass gun into the Spartan!"

Its stil much nicer looking than the Ares though.

Not so keen on the Fellblade, its a bit too boring/odd. More like a Baneblade with a Macharius style twin main gun and Spartan sponsons shoved on the side. It just doesnt all really fit together, looks a bit too slung together in a hurry to me.
