Topic.

Do I have to show that a particular unit has a mark of chaos on them or is it good enough to just tell my opponent before the game "This unit has mark of blahblahblah." ?

How about make a token to put down next to the squad? If anything it can help you to remember as well.

Edit: also it can be fun to make some cool tokens!

Actually I was thinking of using my left over icons as tokens! I would just lay them next to the squad (the only icon I used for a model was the undivided symbol...)

In my view its good enough to tell your opponent. However you risk missing some awesome modelling opportunities

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Telling them/labelling should be fine, but it's a good idea to maybe paint the icon on, or even use colours related to the god ( e.g green/brown for nurgle, pink/purple for slaanesh, blues for tzeench, red for Khorne)

I'd put the token/mark/ device on a bannerpole and mount it to a 25mm base that can follow the squad around. That way you have no issues of 'forgotten tokens' as you move or mixing up mark-tokens for wound-tokens, etc.

They could also make nice themed objectives.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

I like the idea of mounting them on a base and it moving with the squad.

why don't you just have a standard bear for the squad so you can use te different symbols on the pole. You just need two small magnets and you are set so forth you can swap game to game and not worry. plus if they are undivided the standard that comes in the marauder box set in fantasy is a great standard for your undivided. That is what i would do if I was going for the units of questionable back ground but since I'm blood and guts chaos it not hard to tell who my boys follow to their ruin.

Can't have a standard bearer as that could be mistaken for an 'icon' of chaos

I've been toying with pinning marks and icons onto backpacks, like samurai banner poles. When there's no mark or icon, pin a trophy spike or a tentacle, or a simple cap of somekind. Haven't tested it out yet.

cool idea for using the icon as a token. take a standard 25 mil base or even a 40mil base and center the icon in it and glue the icon to the base. you might need to sand 1 side of the icon to make it flat. but then you can just paint the whole thing and the icon will be raised above the base and would make a Start and Stunning contrast. its what my buddy did for his objective markers the day before a tournament lol.

No, you do not. In fact you don't "have to do anything" in 40K.

A mark is wargear\upgrade, which in almost any gaming enviornment can be substituted as you see fit.

I made MoK cultists by giving them blood effects and using the same colour to paint a Mark of Khorne on them. See below

I think you'd be fine just telling your opponent. it's written down on your army list, so you can just show him if a question comes up.

if I knew for sure that I was always going to run a given unit with a specific mark, I'd probably paint/model it onto the unit just for flavor. if I thought I'd be switching marks around, I think I'd go with something like dkellyj and Lord_Ghazghkull's ideas: apply the mark to a spare base, paint it up nice and just move it around with the squad. just make a point of keeping it out of the way on the table... ("you can't see him, he's got cover from this mark of nurgle!")
