Hi all,
I was looking at Wargames factory's website earlier, and came across their 28mm ww2 stuff. Immediatley I though: GUARD PROXIES!!!
http://wargamesfactory.com/webstore/world-war-2/wwii-german-infantry-platoon
http://wargamesfactory.com/webstore/world-war-2/28mm-us-infantry
See what I mean?
So I was just wondering if you awesome people here knew of any other decent guard proxies (not gw legal), preferably plastic. This is because I don't...really want to be paying nearly £20 for some guard that are gonna die tbh.
Thanks

Sisters of Battle can be used in any game, with the exception of chess, Monopoly and of course, Warhammer 40,000.
After 8 editions, you might have thought that GW could get fantasy right. |

Mantic Games sells Corporation Marines (IG equivalents) for £15 per 10 off their website (or £25 for a two pack of 20). They actually have a scifi look/feel to them as well.

Wargames Factory Great Coat Shock Troops yes, but their WW2 range is true 28mm scale, ie. the models are just too slight of build when compared to GW heroic scale. Which is a shame, because you're right, they would have made great IG stand-ins.
As for other ranges out there, just of the top of my head there's Mantic Corporation troopers which would make good Drop Troops, em4 miniatures do cheap plastic sci-fi troops, theres a company on ebay, Prince August i believe that sell loads of plastic Warzone miniatures reasonably cheap. I'm sure there's more but any of these, with a bit of conversion work could make good guard proxies.

I don't see the problem with them being too small for GW's heroic scale tbh. Both FW Elysians & Death Korps are true 28mm scale, and most of the non-plastic IG are closer to true scale than the plastics.

Isn't there a sticky covering this?
There are a ton of good alternate infantry out there: WGF, Mantic, Trollforged, Victoria Miniatures, Pig Iron, Miniatures of the North (Anvil Industries), Dreamforge, etc.

The problem comes when you try to put IG weapons (If that's your goal) or any other heroic scale weapons on true-scale 28mm figs. They look ridiculously huge. You could buy forge world weapons, but that would be quite expensive. Another option would be true scale 28mm figs with sci-fi weapons from a company like Hasslefree which is still a touch heroic, but are slim enough to look great on non-heroic miniatures.
Luckly, the WGF Greatcoats and the Warzone plastics both are plenty bulky and sized appropriately to take GW weapons and parts if you so desire.
Here's a Mantic Corporation Trooper, Warzone Imperial and GW Cadian
and IG and Greatcoat bodies with IG arms and Pig Iron heads.

Eilif, you have championed my point (great paint job on your cadian/pig iron figures by the way). What i was trying to put across was that in order to convert the WF germans and GIs look more like IG troops you're gonna in all probability stick a load of cadian or catachan gear from the plastic sets on them. Lasguns, helmets, even canteens, will look ridiculously over sized.
I bought a some of the WF WW2 german officer heads in caps and field hats from Hoard o Bitz, was thinking they'd look great on my cadian bodies but unfortunately they just didn't scale up to GW unless you wanted a squad of pin heads. Luckily they only cost me a couple of dollars so no great loss, like progreen10 i had previously thought the WW2 range would make good guard proxies and would have bought a shed load of them if they'd been heroic scale but i'm glad i did a test purchase first!

Thanks, I very much agree with you. It can be problematic finding historical that meet the "heroic" bulk necessary to match up with most sci-fi figs. Still if folks aren't wedded to GW weapons and accessories, there are some good options.
Glad you liked the figs, unfortunatley those aren't my pics. I would have figs like that except that I was waiting to see what the WGF Greatcoat Heavy Weapons set would look like. Suffice to say that when I saw the really weak tripod mounted weapons and the terrible officer fig, I was unimpressed and the project never happened. I still have a couple platoons worth of IG arms and bitz waiting for just the right project to come along. It's got to be just the right project though to lure me into making another IG army when I already have one. http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-24779-13756_Melk%2037th.html

Hello,
I like using the Warzone figs for my Chaos Guardsmen. They look just fine and there are a number of different weapons out there. Autoguns are just like lasguns on the table and look great!!
Good luck!

Here's a comparison of the Mantic drop troopers with a FW Elysian and my bastardized Cadian/Catachan/Pig Iron/Hasslefree Veteran.
Many apologies for the photo quality; I don't have my camera with me and my cell phone camera is 4 years old and wasn't good even when it was new.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I also have some Dreamforge Eisenkern Stormtroopers arriving soon. When they get assembled and painted I'll try to put up some comparison shots, seeing as I own a lot of alternate Guard minis.
