I play an Ultramarine army, and recently I finally bought an Aegis line. I'm trying to think of use full things to stick behind it. Currently I dump my snipers and devastators back there with a quad gun. I used to put A 3 lascannon predator behind it as well, but I've started using bikes and assault units as my dedicated AT units. I was thinking of putting either a whirlwind or a thunderfire cannon back there but wanted to hear from people and see what good or bad experienced other Space Marine players have had with each unit. Also, what else is use full to have behind the Aegis line?

Dont go with WW i have never heard good things about them, take a Thunderfire cannon cant go wrong with that if you are fighting a horde army.
If you really want some artillery take the fortress of redemption. after a lot of thinking i decided to get it the stats for it are pretty freaking good.
for 290 you get a huge fort with a TL icuras cannon, so say bye bye to flyers, 4 heavy bolters, frag and krak storm missiles, which are range 18-96" large blast ordinance, barrage

The problem with the fortress is most of my games take place at my FLGS where the tables are pre-set with terrain, and any way I'd rearrange them just wouldn't be as great as I'd like. The Aegis works since it let's me slap together a quick fire base. Also I don't want to sink 300 pnts into a fortification. Thanks for the advice on the cannon though.

The fort is pretty lame IMO. Just a marketing gimmick, has a stupidly high points cost (seriously 300pts, I could get two LRBTs for that and they'll do so much more) and is so obnoxiously big...
The Thunderfire cannon on the other hand is fantastic. You get a techmarine with it to boot. It lays down good firepower and can cause difficult terrain. It's a work horse that your list will be great with. Personally I think its essential in a TAC space marine list.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Thunderfire is essential, maybe even two.
But I wouldn't be so quick to discount the Whirlwind. With new Barrage rules, as well as the rules for Whirlwind Hyperios variant, it is quite good.

A thunderfire cannon is best put in a ruin, and the cannon is preferred to the whirlwind.
A master of the forge with a conversion beamer on a bike is an excellent gunline HQ.

Fair enough the cannon is always a good bet but dont under estimate the FoR. For 300 points its a powerful fire base.

Thunderfire Cannons aren't barrage, just to make sure everyone knows. But they are an amazing answer to Horde armies.
I personally run Vindicators, but I also play a more aggressive Vanilla Marine list. (Well, as aggressive as Vindicators, Combat Squads of Tactical Marines, and Typhoon speeders can be)

Thunderfire works well; Dakkapreds are fairly inexpensive and can do plenty of damage; Whirlwinds are cheap but ineffective unless you're using them against a light infantry horde and generally overshadowed by the Thunderfire cannon in that role. Allied IG are always a choice, but that can get expensive.

If you need anti-horde, a thunderfire cannon is pretty nice.
If you need medium range anti-armour, the rapier laser destroyer is pretty nice.

Nice... This is just what I was looking for! I think in 6th a lot of people are looking for good, cheap alternatives to bringing vehicles... well, except IG that is...
