It was to get people to quickly impulse buy it. GW's new tactic is to more or less make everything "SUPER PREMIUM EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EDITION".
GW is roping in impulse buyers/kids/collectors while deliberately trying to drive away older gamers/veterans.

Pretty much this. Now I feel like I'm dealing with a scam " SUPER PREMIUM EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EDITION ANNOUNCED ONLY A WEEK BEFORE IT IS RELEASED AND SELLS OUT IN TWO DAYS BUY NOW BUY!".

They aren't trying to deliberately drive away older gamers. That's silly and makes no business sense.
That they are trying to grab their share of your disposable income by making it seem like there is a rush to get it, yes, that makes sense. In a recession, there is less money to be spent.
It's simple marketing and pricing. They want a share of your wallet. Your wallet is smaller, so they use tactics to try and get you to part with that smaller share. Not everyone will be happy, but such is life.

You also need another 2k investment in the terrain to run the campaign. We did a 1v1 tourny style of the arena. I just ruined it for everyone by using Ahriman and avoiding the actual mechanics the scenario was supposed to be played by. I won by just regening every wound and casting smite and doombolts. trololol ...oh and lots of running away.

It's not just that it's limited edition everything, but they produce minimal stock.
I was talking to the owner of my FLGS, and he said that for our entire region of 7 million people and dozens of hobby stores, they only had 50 of the christmas megaforces (roughly one for every 3 stores in the province), and enough of the CoF for each store to get 4 copies.
So what this meant is only the busiest stores really got any of the products. So, for instance, one of the busiest stores in the region with 30-odd 40k regulars got A battleforce of both 'Crons and SM, and I believe 7 CoF.
Our store didn't get any of the battleforces, and the CoF books were gone by 2 hours after opening.
The asinine thing about this is that they don't produce enough to capitalize upon demand. I get the whole "limited" marketing trick, we saw that with the PS3 release, but they're not even hitting 30% of the potential buyers. I know 4 people in my group alone who would have bought the necron box, and another half dozen who would have bought CoF.
Yet GW doesn't want their money it seems.
|
Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

CoF seems limited run for a more cynical reason. I can't imagine many people who've gotten to look through it would willingly buy it. The book should have been two White Dwarf articles, tops.

Only if you don't botch the briefing
"We had preorders for 50.000 Space Hulk boxes, we produced 10.000 which sold out in 2 days. I call that a huge success."
"Why didn't you produce 50.000 Space Hulk boxes to meet the demand?"
"Because we wanted to make it a special limited edition."
"Why?"
"Erm ... you are fired."
That said, GW orders a certain run by its printers in China. If the demand is high, they have the option to order a second printing in 6-12 months. This campaign book was "limited supply", not "limited edition", so they are allowed to do a second printing, as happens with the Fantasy Badlands campaign book.

Any hopes to see Crusade of Fire to be worldwide 'story determining' campaign now grows dim.
also new 'Trenches n Pillboxes with dead cadians piled up to the wall' can be better if carcass things are actually different miniature pieces rather than integrated into the wall itself. otherwise this will add more market shares to SMEs

well you could always Orrenttay ethay ulebooksray andway odexescay. The one thing they do that ticks me off is not the expensive models i can handle that. Not making collecter models that are hard to come by any more that's fine.
But charging me $75 for a bloody rule book! I need to pay over $100 for rules, codexs, campaign books. ontop of the $300+ i have spent on a 2k army, well sir, i tip my hat to you GW, good day sir!

Is it really so hard to plan out and create an original campaign of one's own? With time, a person with a passion for the storyline could create something fun and playable. I just can't see spending $75 on a campaign rulebook.

It doesn't change your point much, but Crusade of Fire is only $41

I think it's more along the lines of them realizing that they're charging $40 for small book that is mostly fluff, photos and notes from the developers and about 10 pages of rules.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

You print an amount you are fairly sure of selling, and selling quickly, because holding stock is expensive, especially at your stores.
Cost of retail is zero, according to some in here
They don't have to produce the books, you don't need to buy them, so making them limited run so they don't loss a ton of money while it site around on the shelf is just good sense.
Oh, and apparently you can instantly make 5x the no of space hulk, because printing and shipping from China is instant, they just have presses waiting to run the models off, and they appear in the boxes as if by magic. Alternatively a naive first order analysis is just that.

Crusade of Fire sounds awesome I would love to get it unfortunately like all New Zealanders GW hate us poor kiwis. Ok $40 for a 96 hard cover book is fine I would gladly pay for it but no GW charges us $80 for it I just brought the rule book for $146 plus the CSM codex for $98 can't you at cut me some slack looks like I have to wait till its cheap on trademe, sorry GW I love everything about warhammer 40k and I would gladly buy it but you really me off so bad its not funny
(note I would probably just buy it anyway feeling so stupid and poor afterwards as thats what GW does best for all the complaining people still buy it, but they can't even get that right as I can't get a copy I don't even think NZ got a single copy so once again I am off)

It is still in stock for GW UK (and for most translated versions, such as Germany).
Wayland Games also had close to 100 left last I looked.
It might be "as long as stock lasts", but there're enough of them around I would say.. at least this side of the Atlantic.
[edit]
Crusade of Fire on Amazon, even there, thoughover priced.

That doesn't help those of us who live in the rest of the world since it can't be sold by Wayland Games to any not in Western Europe.

Why the conspiracy theory? GW screwed up. Plain and simple. Of course it would have been in their best interest to produce enough of the product to satiate the demand. Volume is more important than price.
It kind of bothers me as well. Our next league was going to start this monday, but it's going to be put off until January when someone can get their hands on the copy of the book. Our entire 7-county area managed to get exactly 1 copy, and it's in the hands of a TFG that refuses to share it.
In this case, we're not paying more for the product, we're paying NOTHING, because we can't get our hands on one. And we're upset. Big blunder on GW's part.

I'm guessing they took a real beating (internally) over the whole Dreadfleet debacle and so as a knee jerk reaction they're now doing evrything with extremely limited production runs, so tat they don't end up with stacks of unwanted product cluttering up the place.
Of course any sane company would a) actually figure out why Dreadfleet didn't sell and realise it has nothing to do with their core products and b) use sales/promotions/discounts to shift stock if it doesn't do quite as we'll as expected.
