yeah,
Is it possible to have a ignore thread button so that the thread disappears from my view of the forum list.
I'd love to be able to remove unwanted threads from view.
It would make news and rumors so much nicer to remove things like kickstarters or gamesystems that I have no interest in.

There are threads I know offer nothing to me and take up space.
There are certain threads that annoy me and seeing them bothers me.

That would actually be a really cool feature.

I could see this being quite handy.

It might also stop some of the whinging that goes on about Kickstarters taking up most of the N&R page.

Off-Topic should be opt-in to show up at all...

Typically we would just say ignore with your eyes A cross-site user specific ignore feature for threads would be too database intensive. There is value in having people able to ignore threads as it lets us assign a negative score for algorithmic weighting, but it is nothing I'll add anytime soon on account of the level of work required.

I'd like to know more about that - to what purpose do you weight threads, and how are the results displayed to users? Or is this something still in development?

I dont at the moment beyond very basic weighting for home page promotion. If I was able to do so reliably then I could do more interesting things

What is thread weight? What does it mean/do?

Just an automatic assumption of the quality of a thread based on various metrics.

Needs more noise-to-volume analysis.

Don't you mean signal to noise?

Also, if something online is bothering you significantly, that is a personal problem. Perhaps you need to take a step back from the internet instead of trying to censor it.

yeah,
I'd be self filtering out the gak, which is different to censorship.
If people wanna talk about stuff I'm not interested in like chapterhouse or gun ownership that's fine by me.
But when it takes up space on page I'd like to be able to filter it out so more good stuff fits on instead.

I also like the idea of thread weight being improved, hopefully it will show which threads are actually good and which ones are just a bunch of people making a lot of noise.

The thing is Panic that if you are only talking about one or two topics (and not a whole type of thread like Kickstarters for example) and those specific threads taking up space on the page, then you could just go to page 2.....

I dont disagree with you, im just pointing out that if it a small volume of threads that you dont want to view then its not too difficult to just not read them and keep looking for threads you do want to see...and i am only going by the specific examples you have given, apologies if its not relevant...
