So, I'm going to build some of these guys.

I love the image of this trooper, it's far more evocative for me than any other guard imagery, yet it doesn't exist as a miniature! I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty with a little sculpting, but are there any 'base model' bits that anyone can recommend to speed things up/for variety of poses?

I've already purchased a small supply of the lasgun from the old metal Necromunda weapons sprue which is bang on for this (the lasgun top left, Escher-style).

The closest model I can think of is Lieutenant Varras:

I have a couple en route, and could maybe clip the arms and legs off and use as a base? But how to keep the variety? I wonder if anyone with a more in-depth knowledge of Warhammer parts could suggest a Fantasy base model? The Bretonnian Men-at-Arms spring to mind, but they are distinctive in their own right, and much use. I want to be as close to these Jes Goodwin concepts as possible.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The more I think about it, I wonder if Cadians with sculpted longer coats and modified helmets will be easiest.

Either the Vostroyans or use the Wargame Factory legs with cadian everything else?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Vostyroyans = MONEY and I think they're too furry/chain-mail-y for me.

Wow, those Wargames Factpry minis are pretty close!

That was one of the best pieces of artwork in the Second Ed. You can also see how the Necromundan Spiders formed the basis for House Orlock in Necromunda

What about using either the plastic High Elf Archer or Empire Flagellant legs with some green stuff as the base. Plastic Catachan boots for the feet and Forgeworld Cadian Hazardous Environment suits for the torso?

Just a small suggestion but you might want to consider PM'ing a Mod and asking that the thread be moved to the P&M Blogs. It seems that there is more traffic there and you might get more help and inspiration.

Wasn't there an old GW metal figure that looked pretty much exactly like that? Only one though, IIRC, so would be no good for building a whole squad... :(

Have you considered wargames factory shock troopers?. They are greatcoat bodies with kaiser style helmets and gas masks. Inexpensive as well, $20 per 18.

Armies: Space Marines, IG, Tyranids, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Dark Eldar.

I really want to make something as close to the picture as possible. I don't think the WF ones are quite right for me... they're missing a certain je ne sais quoi. Gonna get the GS out and have a play...

Well I've tried to turn just about every model into IG at one point or another so let me chime in.

HE archers are wasp-waisted like all the elfs and will be too thin to fit with Cadians. The WGF bodies might be better. Brett Men at Arms might work but are also a bit smaller and thinner.

I never tried a conversion like that with Flagellents, they are really great models but I think the details on the belts would look bad.

If you're good with GS what about just GS skirts for cadians, save you buying another kit just for the legs?

I was just looking for suitable bodies through the GW site, thanks for the scaling details Kid_Kyoto.

It's one of my favourite images so it would be great if someone could do it justice.

Don't know if this will help but here's my Flaggellents as Redemtionist Zealots

Once nice thing is their robes are all ragged and well textured so they look like they've been in a fight. So it could work...
