So my GF has started work on her very first squad of models. She loves Orks and their personality. She loves the general flavor and silliness. She also is liking Trolls for Warmahordes. But, I digress.

Since I read a lot of Dakka (lurk more than I post) for hints/tips on painting, she wanted me to post her WIPs of her Ork Gretchin with Runtherder and see what you thought. I've told her these are great for her first paint jobs so far and she hasn't even tried the highlighting yet.

So, please be kind, but let us know what you think:

Much better than my first attempt....or second for that matter. Yes, some highlighting is needed, but that's something to ease into when she's comfortable. She has stayed within the lines and blocked out the colors well, I'd say she has done a good job that can be built on later as she gains more experience and confidence. Well done!

Base 'em, highlight 'em, and hit 'em with some washes/shades. But without a doubt, these are way, way, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than my first models! I think your GF is on her way to becoming a good painter, especially with a start on those tiny guys! She must have some steady hands, I can't see any place where there's metal on hands or cloth on skin.

I'm with Deunstphe, though I think with grots more focus on a good wash is in order.

Big thumbs up from another ork player/painter!

Looking good - agree with most of the comments here - not much to add.

Maybe try and photograph them on a dark background. The white is washing the colours out a bit.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Looking really good so far. As others have said they are quite well painted for a first timer.

I'd be making the skin a lighter green colour and then hitting everything with a black wash.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. The GF enjoyed it and appreciates it.

I'm trying not to hover and be too mother hen-ish so that she has space to do what she wants and experiment. I did show her paint thinning, how to clean up brushes, and have explained the basics of highlights/washes. She asked this morning if I can re-organize my painting table so that there's room for both of us to work on stuff at the same time now. I'm going to surprise her with a couple brushes of her own and her own hobby board on one side of the table.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

They look pretty well painted, a lot darker than grots generally are, but nice deliniation of colours.

Try and take pictures in brighter light if you can as that will help show the models off.
