Hi, all.
I’m sure I’m not the first to come up with this idea, but I’ve searched around Dakka and I cannot find a thread. Apologies, however, if I’ve missed one.
I’m thinking of adding some Rough Riders to my Imperial Guard force, but I really don’t like the current, old-style Games Workshop, hun-looking models.
I’ve thought about kit bashing my own, which should be fun as I’ve never attempted a kit bash before. Now; as I’m a newbie to all this, can anyone suggest some ideas of what kits to use?
The ultimate look I want is a “standard” looking guardsman, with helmet and flak armour, but mounted on a horse with a lance.
The only thing I can think of is to smash together a Cadian Shock Trooper squad and a Reiksguard troop from Warhammer Fantasy.
Is there anything else that may work?
Kind regards,
|

Good luck if you can find what your looking for. I was told that the Empire Mounted pistol dudes would mesh well with Cadian torsos, not tried it my self yet (to many projects on the go) bur that might be worth a look at. Or if you have a kidney for sale there is always the forgeworld Kreg Riders.

Ah, the pistoliers, I didn't think of them, thanks.

I picked up the arms and legs from Victoria Miniatures and they worked great. I had tried to cut up & greenstuff Cadian legs, but that looked like garbage, so I scrapped those. Then I added stowage bits to the backs of the horses and shoulderpads that I did not use from the Valkyrie/Leman Russ bits.
I've got most of them primed now, but this is the only picture I have of them.

Well, it's not always the best suggestion, but Forgeworld Death Riders from Death Korps of Krieg. Forgeworld can be a little expensive but those models seemed reasonable to me.

Aswell as Victoria Miniatures for Roughrider components there's also Curious Constructs.
Check them out, they focus on the old Praetorian/steampunk type IG but if its just the horse rider legs you need to kit bash with say a plastic Cadian torso they do 2 different sets at a reasonable price. They've pith helmet heads amongst other things and some really nice dress uniform torsos too

I built rough riders using Bret knights which I gs'ed jackboots over the mail. Additionally I used cadian torsos & left arms with the gloved shield hand cut from the Knight torso. The chainmail on the lance arms helps add to the feel that the lance is explosive-tipped I feel. I added all manner of stowage & am sculpting gas masks & armored visors on the mounts. The barding on the horses lets me camo them to match their riders.

Do you think that it’ll look daft if I simply get a troop of Reiksguard from Warhammer Fantasy and replace their left arms with las-pistol arms?
I know I said I’d like to have a standard Cadian look to them, but now I’m thinking that I might like to see some kind of armoured retro-tech cavalry; much like the French in WW1, everyone else was wearing drag greys and kaki, but the French were galloping into machine-gun fire wearing blue tunics, red trousers, and polished cuirasses and helmets.
I’m not sure; las- and plasma-gun armed, armoured cavalry with exploding lances? Thoughts?

Are you dead set on using horses? There are a multitude of other design options in there if you're willing to do a bit more work

Personally I use these guys:
However I've also seen conversions using cold Ones for dragon riders, bikes and even segeways. You need something that looks fast, fits on a cavalry base and has the relevant wargear, but otherwise the universe is your oyster

@smitty - those look really good. They fit the classic look very well.

It's a scratch built bike using a variety of components, i recognise the headlamp being a vox caster part, the imperial eagle from the tank sprue, i think the chassis is an eldar jetbike one (correct me if i'm wrong someone) and the wheels are probably from the old style heavy weapons, here is a step by step.
http://wargamingforums.com/2007/10/18/the-conversion-vault-40-cadian-rough-riders/
but here is a model website that sells all types of bikes, worth a look!
http://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=24&zenid=abfeb902949cd28c061952d2f3168716
i recommend the bike scrambler with male legs, then its just put a cadian body on with some arms and you're away.
