It's been a few years since last time (about three or so), but better late than never right? Last time around I began an "Tallarn" Imperial Guard project (old blog at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/205727.page) with converted cadians. now, a few years later time once again allows me to have a look at all the old minis gathering dust in the attic, and see which ones deserve a round of paint. So, without further ado, I present to you my first 5 minis in a while:

This first image is simply a comparison between two identical models. On the left just painted, on the right dipped

Right now they're quite glossy because of the dip, but a bit of dull coat will help immensely with that. I do plan to do a bit of darkening on the base, but other than that I consider the models finished.

Coming up in the near future:
- 5 more troopers (including plasma gunner and missile launcher team)
- Centaur artillery tractor
- 2 Scout sentinels
- 2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks
- More troopers (Both original tallarns and some brave conversion attempts)

Thank C.Sgt. Kell - I obviously share your sentiment for non-Cadians, though I have to admit they will crop up in here sooner or later. There's only so much you can do with metal models, when the possibilites with plastics and green stuff are endless!

First squad is now finished, apart from some minor touches and some dull coat.

I've also clean out a few boxes, looking for vehicles to add to the motor pool. So far, I've found the following: Two sentinels, two Leman Russes and a Centaur

Not much work done so far this weekend, but a random 5 minute kitbash resulted in this bloke

This is the beauty of plastic kits, and the massive supply of bits I have lying around after years of warhammering. He's currently made up of bits from the cadian trooper, empire wizard and empire state troops boxed sets.
Any suggestions as to what he can represent? I pondering giving him a commisar hat, or perhaps a force weapon for that Primaris psyker look.

Squidbot: Cheers!

Edit: since this post focuses on the daemon contingent I am now not including in my force (at least for the time being), I have cropped it. I will however leave it in for the sake of continuity.

Spoiler:
Now for a bit of input on future models. This time around I'm doing this project more for the hobby itself than the gaming. As such, I will be focusing on painting up the models I want, rather than the ones that will be effective game-wise (to a certain extent anyway.)
For that, I find that the brilliant new Allies system allows for some great variety. With that, I'm pondering including both SM Land Speeder Storms (with Scouts made up to look like Storm Troopers/Carapace veterans) and a daemon contigent.

When it comes to the daemons, I would like to make them in a "arabic/persian" style, to represent spirits from the regiments home world. As I'm going for Bloodletters and Flamers, I've so far come up with the following proxies:

Flamers: VC Spirit hosts - the ideas is to greenstuff keffiyehs/shemags/turbans, and paint their skin djinnish blue.

Bloodletters: Three alternatives so far:

- Regular Bloodletters with lots of greenstuff robes, skin painted blue. By far the cheepest alternative, but not to sure about my greenstuff skills.

- LOTR Ringswraits painted in similar "desertish" colours to the rest. Will cost an arm and a leg, but looks great.

- LOTR Harad Abrakhân Guard painted up in djinnish colour.

Any preferences/concerns/ideas?

Hiding in a ruined Chimera

The nazgul and the harad guard might not look right against the guard, the LOTR series follows a more accurate scale of 28mm figures. However the bloodletters should be great, and the spirit hosts work perfectly!

@Fenwulf29: I have had some concerns about the size difference myself. The models were just too cool to not consider. The spirit hosts are a given, and I'm getting a trial Bloodletter to see what I can do with it.

@Swampyturtle: Cheers for that! I had a look at your Guardsmen as well, good stuff!

Two more troopers and a meltagunner have been finished today, apart from their bases. Was a bit hard to get a proper picture because of the glossy dip this time around.

I also dug out one of my finished models from last time around, a old-style Cadian Lieutenant with Shotgun. Not sure if I have a use for him, but I still like how he looks.

Lastly for today, I've been pondering what to do with this bloke here:

Since I haven't really planned on using neither Psykers nor Commisars, I did a bit of thinking. How would you guys feel about him representing a Herald of Tzeentch? The idea being that he's a former Sanctioned Psyker (who according to the Dark Heresy rulebook could very well have a military rank, hence the uniform), who's responsible for summoning the "spirits of the land" ? (i.e. Flamers) This also gives me an excuse to make two more "Heralds," for each of my future Bloodletter groups.

Comments?

No new minis this time, but with the help of some friendly former IG players at the FLGS some cheap chimeras will soon be added to the motor pool. After reading up on the Tallarn fluff, I've decided to go with a list that uses their favourite special weapons (plasma/missile launcher) combined with some MechGuard goodness (who wants to walk in a desert anyways?)

With that in mind, my first objective will be to assemble and paint the following 600p list;

CCS - Bolter, 2 plasma, chimera w/HHF

#1 Veteran Squad - 2 plasma, chimera w/HHF
#2 Veteran Squad - 2 plasma, chimera w/HHF

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/HHB

Total points: 597

I figure it fits quite well with the concept of a small forward patrol contingent. I opted for the Russ over a third vet squad simply because of the models I currently have available.

PS: Credit where credit is due - I think I saw this list on the forum here somewhere, but I can find the post again. So thanks to whoever wrote it

@Swampyturtle: I would have loved to see those finished as well. Do you remember what other plastic sets might have been used for them? Since Pistoliers are cavalry, I'm guessing the legs come from somewhere else.

Today: PROGRESS!

With these minis having been stored in a box for a few years, it's a joy to finally get some colour on them. At this rate I'm finishing about 5 every 2-3 days, which should let me work up a playable force fairly quickly. As I'm now working towards the 600p list mentioned in the post above, I've ordered up the remaining 12 tallarns I need. These should arrive next week, which should give me time to retouch the tanks in the mean time.

Gratuitous group shot of models that will be included in the 600p list:

Those currently in the works, from the left: converted plasma gunner, sergeant, trooper, sergeant, trooper:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/26/468206_md-Tallarn%20Desert%20Raiders.jpg

Two sergeants, with their trademark plasma pistols switched with laspistols:

Finally, a comparison shot of the converted plasmagunners, with the original model on the far right. I used the tips of the plasma pistols from the sergeants, and quite easily stuck them onto the regular troopers:

hi swampy, thanks for the props man, means alot - just been super super busy for the last little while (stoopid life)
the tallarn may yet resurface.

Agandhjin, i used empire archers as the base for mine, along with the catachan command box and greenstuff.

making the headwraps i searched how you would make the in real life and just did it on a much smaller scale with green stuff.

cheers - sherrpa

Cool, thanks to the both of you!

@Sherpa; by far, your conversions are the most Tallarnish I've come across. What I particularly like is that while some conversions require some impressive greenstuff skills, yours are way simpler - and in my opinion, more fitting together with the metal tallarns.

I actually picked up a couple of Archers from a friend today. Looking forward to trying it out. Only difference is I'll be trying with cadian arms. Hope youll have a chance to work on yours, and thanks for the inspiration :-)

Edit: Sherpa, if you have something in the way a tutorial for those sleeves, I would be grateful if you'd consider sharing

Not much to say tonight, other than that another five are finished:

I'm particularly happy with how the sergeants turned out. The plastic laspistols I gave them are a bit less "stylish" than the plasma gun they usually have, but other than that I think this might one of my favorite GW models. Apart from Tellion of course

While waiting for the remaining Tallarns and chimeras to arrive in the mail, I decided to touch up the paint on the Russ;
I find tanks a bit difficult to paint, simply because of the large flat areas are difficult to paint right. Dip helped the colour immensely; the colour seems glossier in the photo than it is in real life, especially when it dries up.

Stuff left to do for the 600p list:
- finish bases for the painted models
- 10 more Tallarn Desert Raiders, including the Command Squad
- 3 Chimeras

Have you looked at Wargames Factories Persians while true scale them or the Perry's Zouaves might be a good source of models.

Those from Wargames Factory are actually really nice! And since a sprue of 6 costs less than the postage, I'm probably getting some just for the fun of it. But what I never can remember is if "true scale" is slightly smaller or larger than regular 40k/fantasy ones. Any pointers?

Picture from the Wargames Factory website (http://wargamesfactory.com). Sadly, the only picture. Slap some cadian arms, grenades and canteens on them, and good to go?

Always nice to see more Tallarns about! I'll be keeping an eye on this. Glad you decided to go with the old metal models.

Lovely stuff so far!

Also, "true scale" is typically smaller than the GW heroic style- GW ones tend to have larger hands, heads, weapons etc- Although the this is much more the case with the newer plastic Cadians and Catachans than the older metal Guard models. The same goes for Forge World Tallarns- they have slightly more realistic proportions, but still fit in fine with the metals.

I have a converted guy a bit like your sorcerer dude and I can't decide what he's supposed to be either! Maybe a Tallarn Prince/Colonel or Master of Ordnance...

Cheers Arclaw!

While I'm a bit back and forth on whether to continue with metal or try and convert plastics (probably end with doing a bit of both), I find that the metal ones, and in particular the sergeant, are some of my favorite GW models to date. As I'm taking things a bit more slow this time around, I'm going for a complete metal "core" with the appropriate conversions, most likely around 50 or so Desert Raiders.

Thanks for the points on scale btw, knowing that makes metal (and perhaps some Forgeworld ones as well) more likely for me.

A tip of the hat to your Tallarns as well, they look great! But why aren't there any recent updates?

Sounds like a plan!

There are no updates on my Tallarn blog because I shelved the project for a bit... I haven't painted any Tallarn dudes for over a year. I was trying to do two armies at once- orks and IG- and was using the orks in a campaign. Since I was making no progress doing both I thought that I'd stop the IG for now and come back to them when I had tried out a few more things (like... how to weather vehicles...).

Still... 5 more boyz to go, and then it's time to give the Tallarns another try! Although at my slow pace, 5 boyz could take me a month...

Looking forward to seeing them Arclaw! Always good to see more Tallarns. And Mordians... and Praetorians... Or Vostroyans for that matter.

For a bit of variety, I've decided to assemble an allied Space Marine Force to support my Tallarns. Mostly for the sake of variety in models, but also because I fluffwise like the idea of them being undercover Alpha Legion. It fits with the fluff of Tallarn, and allows me to make some of my favorite models; SM Scouts, Land Speeder Storms and Tellion! Not to mention the fact that I already own three boxes of scouts.

Modeling-wise, I will simply swap out the scout heads with cadian ones, and have them look like an elite attachment of guardsmen with special training. While using these will require me to redo my army list (SM will have to become the primary detachment, IG contingent will have to be changed), I like the idea of making "modular" army contingents that can go together with little or no list changes.

For now, I'm looking at the following list:

Space Marine Captain - unsure what loadout he should have. ~ 150 points

Troops
#1 Scout squad (4 shotguns/bolters, combi-flamer, meltabombs) - 90 points
#2 Scout squad (4 shotguns/bolters, combi-flamer, meltabombs) - 90 points
#3 Scout squad (4 Sniper rifles, camo cloaks) - 90 points
- Can include Sgt. Tellion, totaling 137 points

Fast Attack
Land Speeder Storm (Heavy flamer) - 60 points
Land Speeder Storm (Heavy flamer) - 60 points

Total: 452 points

The general idea is to have the shotgun scouts moving around, supporting the chimera-based veterans and claiming objectives towards the end of the match.

Some ideas for changes include:
- Should the sniper scouts have a missile launcher as well? Tellion's ability to give the launcher BS 6 allows for some fun shots
- Should the sniper scouts be more than a basic 5-man squad?
- What kind of SM HQ should I go for? Either one that supports the veterans/shotgun scouts, or perhaps (if the rules allow) a techmarine that can support/repair the IG tanks`?

Ideas?

Edit:
Did a bit of fooling around with my scouts, trying out headswaps.

This one uses the old Empire State trooper head that forms the base for my old cadian->tallarn conversions. The hat will be snipped, and replaced with a greenstuff shemagh/keffieyh

This one combines the scout missile launcher torso with a pair of cadian legs. The reason for this being that with a bit of bulking out of his midsection as well as some greenstuff work on his legs, the box of 5 scouts now turn into 6.

For today, probably more for my own sake than yours, I present the assembled 170th Tallarn Mechanized Recon Contingent, with comments on work to be done:

Company Command Squad
- Lieutenant (Bolter): redo base
- 2 Plasma gunners: redo bases
- 2 troopers: redo bases
- Chimera: mount heavy bolter, finish turret, shading

#1 Veteran Squad with Chimera:
- 7 troopers: redo bases
- 2 plasma gunners: untouched
- Sergeant: redo base
- Chimera: new paintjob, mount heavy bolter

#2 Veteran Squad with Chimera
- 5 troopers: untouched
- 2 troopers: redo bases
- 2 plasma gunners: convert plasma guns, paint
- 1 Sergeant: redo base
- Chimera: new paintjob, mount heavy bolter

Leman Russ Battle Tank
- Add accessories, a bit more shading

Still a bit of work to do, but there's light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. At least they're all in house.

Those are actually store-bought, and I haven't done anything to them. I can't remember the company, but I believe they usually make terrain for World in Flames. It's actually a desert fort scaled for 15mm minies, which I use as fortifications instead.
