I've followed up on the saga of this person, first when the Resin Forge C and D post came up and then going through the consolidated post. From reading all of those and seeing "Alans" forwarded PMs and FB posts I don't see how it can be another person.

The fake wife and child cancer claim was bad, but what is really despicable here is that he is roping in Monkey Joe with this, asking him to forward on a suicide threat. That is deplorable, especially the way he worded it to really turn the knife in and cause maximum guilt.

So, I guess we should be looking for an Alan Welson obituary in local LA newspapers.

Then the retraction in the next publication after the 103 year old Alan Welson's family either say "Hey, great-grandpa is still alive" or "He died 3 years ago, why is there a new obituary which sounds nothing like him?"

Just to add on, if he was seriously to that point because of Dakka, he'd have called the police hired a lawyer to issue a C&D and actually gone legal to save himself.

It is sad that it comes to this unfortunately. I know no one here truly wants to see him harmed, but we all also want to see him receive the medical attention he needs.

So Alan/Daniel when you inevitably read this, please check yourself into a self-help program.

If this guy's in California and he just threatened to kill himself, then under California penal code 5150,

5150. (a) When any person, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled, a peace officer, member of the attending staff, as defined by regulation, of an evaluation facility designated by the county, or
other professional person designated by the county may, upon probable cause, take, or cause to be taken, the person into custody and place him or her in a facility designated by the county and approved by the State Department of Health Care Services as a facility for 72-hour treatment and evaluation.
(b) The facility shall require an application in writing stating the circumstances under which the person's condition was called to the attention of the officer, member of the attending staff, or professional person, and stating that the officer, member of the attending staff, or professional person has probable cause to believe that the person is, as a result of mental disorder, a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled. If the probable cause is based on the statement of a person other than the officer, member of the attending staff, or professional person, the person shall be liable in a civil action for intentionally giving a statement which he or she knows to be false.

And if this other person is knowingly posting suicide threats in an online forum they are in violation of penal code §401,

Every person who deliberately aids, or advises, or encourages another to commit suicide, is guilty of a felony.

By not reporting the act, you are encouraging it to happen. Personally, I smell sock-puppet but meh. The antics of this certain individual and their countless incarnations never ceases to amuse. I might intentionally fall for one of his scams next time just so he has the money to continue giving me the occasional larf.

It's funny (not the ha ha kind) but in Oklahoma it's actually illegal to attempt or commit suicide, we're one of a few states with such laws. I had a friend in high school that spent time in juvenile detention for cutting her wrists.

Someone in the area should bring all the necessary information to the authorities and get him taken into custody like agnosto says. If they can't find him, well...

I would agree that someone in the LA area should bring it to the local police's attention that he has threatened on the internet that he is going to take his own life.

Out of curiosity, how common is the green cutting mat used in the BCS pictures, for the FW bit pictures? The one where the marking lines are a light blue and has the 45 degree part?

The reason I ask is its sort of interesting how the pictures on the Three Stage Studios blog use the same mat as a backdrop.

The mat can be purchased at any craft store and is used by most serious modellers and converters.

It's the rest of the background that is similar to DM's work station.

@Self-harm threat: been there, seen it, typical Daniel-pre-disappearing strategy. Also for all others to calm down eventual worries: "Alan Welson" doesn't even have a social security number (yeah, everybody has their sources, Daniel, you angered the wrong people), so he doesn't exist, and he doesn't have a shop or anything else, and the only self-harm fictitious personae can inflict upon themselves is purely fictitious.

Since there is some discrepancy as to where Alan Lives I have reported his Self Harm Threats to FB so he can get the proper care he needs. They are able to contact him and save him from himself. I cannot stand to think that a person would harm themselves and I would do nothing to stop it. Since Some of you think he does not live in LA as he claims and I dont know personally for sure this was the fastest way to get someone to help him and keep him from carrying out his threat of Self Harm.

Here is the Email confirmation I got from Facebook showing that they are enroute to Help out a person that has been driven to the lows. True or not, Fake person or not I cant in good conscience risk someone taking their life when I can stop it.

Good thinking Tommy Facebook will now check "Alan"'s login data and inform the nearest police department. Then he can explain his problems to them while showing them his ID.

Er guys, just a thought, but has anyone actually contacted Facebook and said "we have good reason to believe that this person is not who he claims to be and is using your website to conduct criminal activities"?

The authorities may not be too interested in this scale of crime, but you can be damn sure that FB won't want to be associated with fraud or shipping of stolen goods. And they also have the legal team to dig into it...

P.s. two thumbs up to Munkey-joe, you seem to have been thrown in to the middle of a very awkward situation and have handled it like a class act, bravo sir.

So it's actually easier to commit suicide than prove your identity, or at least give a screenshot to show that you own the stuff you're trying to sell and that you're not just taking people's money for nothing.

That's quite low, though I don't know where it ranks among the made up wife and child dying from cancer, or using his dead mother's identity to sell stuff. Sigh. This drama and putting well meaning people in an awkward spot, like munkey joe, is why no one should get involved with him trying to be his spokesman or mediator.

I've seen a previous poster raise into question Munkey Joe being a sock puppet after posting the initial suicide threat. I don't doubt Joe is who he says he is, after posting a selfie and having someone from BT for the most part vouch for him (It might not hurt to get a definitive, the one post was more a "yeah, he's known here" and a post from Munkey Joe saying "Yea I go there", information which could be easily farmed and used to create a persona -devils advocate) I however believe Munkey Joe is a real person and who he says he is, and the rest of my post is based upon that.

@Daniel Mandelbaum: You are now directly causing grievous harm to another human being. You have preyed upon this persons good will and used him as a tool to further your own ends by using him in a pity/emotional based attack towards your criticizers on Dakka Dakka. This person has showed compassion towards your created persona, believing in your suicide threat, and I would be willing to bet since you sent that initial message to them they have been sickened because they feel they have been involved in potential loss of human life.

You have a vast community, not just here but on many other forums, that communicate that your actions are deplorable and you should feel ashamed. If you don't, you need to sit down and think on why you do not feel shame for what you do. There are many mental illnesses and conditions that can prevent a person from realizing what they are doing is wrong, but at some point you need to acknowledge that you need to make a change and get help.

I can understand if you feel a bit negative towards that, in the long term. I don't condone what you have done in the past in regards to bilking people with previous "business ventures", and I can only hope you get something out of what I have written and either you or someone you know seeks help. But this one time, Daniel, you need to come clean, at least to Munkey Joe, with what you have done. Causing financial damage to someone is nothing compared to causing someone to believe they have been involved in the loss of life.

Like I said, I don't really have any doubts you are who you say you are. I think it is lamentable that Daniel has chosen to use you as a tool, as you represent a fellow gamer, someone providing business services to the community with a track record (I actually might want to get into contact with you in the next month or so in regards to some of your FB posts regarding clear resin casting, as I have some LED based projects that would require that and it seems you have a degassing setup), and are also someone who has been a public servant. I believe its wrong on many levels, morally, practically, spiritually, etc that Daniel or "Alan" has used you for his own purposes while you have shown nothing but good will.

I really can't believe just how insane this all is. Supposedly this guy is pretty good at converting, sculpting, and other kinds of skilled hobby-related crap, so one really has to wonder why he would go through all the trouble of setting up one fake business after another when he could have just gone into business legitimately and started selling his work. no worries. I have been in gaming since the late 90s and have had a very good reputation for almost 20 years in the hobby. I have nothing to hide and Actually am proud of my 100% positive feedback on BT AND ebay so I dont mind showing off.. To be Honest I feel as If I am a HUGE ally to have on your side and IF I were a scammer I would try to friend someone as myself for Legit cred. I am not saying I was scammed by Daniel or Alan, as Honestly neither have ever wronged me, but I can see the appeal and desire to have a "solid guy" in your corner.

1. Daniel has now been accused of scamming since 1997, twelve years before RSO! There is no reason to think he will change, even less so than before, and it was already hopeless.

2. It has been brought to my attention that this is not the first time Daniel has pulled the suicide card both in and out of character when cornered. Usually coinciding with blowing up fb pm's, message boards and emails. Basically flipping over every rock in the yard seeing if any support is left, if there are still enough people uninformed enough to be taken in.

3 Munkey Joe does exist, like many others before him Daniel is simply preying on his good morals. Like with AJ etc, just be polite to him and eventually Mandelbaum will convince him of the truth all by himself.

Anyways, probably best not to dwell on this particular drama too much. No one wants anyone to kill themselves obviously.
