I really enjoyed the competitive nature of Adepticon. It was a lot different than just meeting up with friends and playing a game during the week, and I'd like to try another tournament or event to sate my competitive nature. But, alas, I don't particularly have the funds to fly out to the West Coast to do all of the events over there.

Are there other Chicagoland or indeed just midwest 40k events? Obviously aren't going to be as big as Adepticon, but something interesting at least would be fun.

GenCon is in Indianapolis. They have nearly every game under the sun, from RPGs, to card games, to board games, and many miniatures games, too. 40k is not a big draw there, but I think there was at least 1 event last year.

It's July 30-Aug 2 this year. It's only a 3 hour drive (or so). This will be my 13th since 2001.

And I dont' know if the Indy Open is happening this year or it's date but the Indy Open in Indianapolis. (no idea on size)

All are 2 day events.

Good to know, thanks!

I know about GenCon, I almost went last year but stuff came up. Sad, because I missed Jim Butcher signing things :(

I didn't know they did 40k events, is it just friendly games or is it more of a mini tourney?

I honestly don't know. It was the first time I'd heard of people trying to play 40k at GenCon. It's not really their venue. But, with that many gamers, I can see them pulling off a tournament, even if it's just Kill team.

Edit: I found this thread on Dakka for some of last year's events.

The best thing going for daemons is mucho warp charge and casters that don't worry about periling. A lot of smart Daemon players summons in the beginning to generate even more warp charges.

Last I heard, the Con was going on but when the contract with the state of IN is up, they don't think they'll renew.

Justin,

I think Mission 4 was huge though for daemons. I was fine with all of the other missions expect on that mission.

The secondaries could be blown out so much that the objectives didn't matter. When Nick (Yermon) and I played the table behind us had a portal glyph and summon on the opponents side and created something like 15 units. Just heard the opponent stated that the game was dumb.

Nobody would disagree with that; the missions and scoring system were all great except for that secondary on mission 4/8. It was clearly a mistake.

In my round 4 game I held fewer objectives and still won 22-8. My round 8 game was a bit of a blowout, but it didn't really matter anyhow because I had so many units ready to jump into the backfield by the end.

Curious as to how this placed so well.
Is the general tactic something along the lines of wraith/spyder shame?
Meaning: multiple fast, tough units claiming tactical objectives and creating target priority issues for the opponent, with support from the awesome Zandrek and the Hulk (Orikan)?

Adepticon, per the mission primer, seemed to favor MSU. I don't know that wraiths and spyders count as "shame," but they're definitely handy. I don't know how this list would tackle 3-5 flyrants but it should have been solid at scoring maelstrom points (especially with Zandy to help cycle cards).

Did the Farseer have any particular tricks?

List was designed to win maelstrom. Sandy with duble point from objectives in scarabs gives you alot of points. That list also has very good board control which meas that most objectives are available for you. Farseer was mostly for summoning.

Against a flyrant heavy list that list would have just had to endure and score objectives, which i think it can definitely do. But I don't think Joonas had to play against any nids.

MSU seemed really good at the LVO, too... a few really strong units with a lot of MSU seems to be pretty prevalent in the top lists from both events.

Nick Nanavati wrote up his first four games on Torrent of Fire and will be posting the other four next:

He played Phil Dubbe (Remedy on here, a really tough draw for Round 1!) and Nick Rose in Round 4. A good read!

That seems about correct. Nemesor can get some crazy bonuses from either enemy units or the Warlord Trait tables, while Orikan only adds onto the insane durability. I don't even want to know how many Bolter shots it takes to kill a Canoptek Harvest Wraith with Orikan in the squad!

5 Spyders + Canoptek Harvest = Turn 1 charge with Scarabs, with RP
2 Units of Immortals to sit on your objectives
4 Units of Wraiths to reach out and kill/tie up someone
Farseer zipping around the board making a nuisance of himself.

Looks like it coud easily tie up or hold all 6 objectives by turn 2.

Yeah, the article talks about that . I'd actually copied the whole thing in here after linking to it, but Chip of ToF asked me to remove that, and I've respected his wishes of course. Definitely worth reading though, hilarious how he changed his mind the morning of and went back to running daemons after bringing all the pod marines all the way to the con

I played pod marines against Nick's daemon list tonight. All those re rollable 2++ and 3++ get really annoying. AP1 means nothing against invuln so my melta was less effective than bolters and grav cannons needed 6 to wound everything worth shooting them at. We played Nova mission 2, I lost 3-2 on primary mission points but 4-0 on secondary. I can definitely see why this list won it all.

Just curious... I ordered the void shield generator that adepticon was offering. I still have yet to receive the model. Anyone else having these issues? They didn't have them at the event thanks to a logistical error. The group running the booth said they would mail them out but gave no time table.

Yea I saw the void shield that they had on display at Adepticon and I was pretty impressed. I am eagerly waiting the arrival on mine. Though they will be banned from most events by the time I get it assembled and painted.
