Don't want to hijack the main X-Wing thread that is ongoing so I have made this one. Got my X-Wing box today and am pleasantly surprised at the quality of the minis and components inside, to the extent that I am already planning on expanding my collection. What do people suggest as next purchases or is it a case of hitting the Wayland website and buying one of everything? I know Panic suggested extra dice etc so that is a given but are there specific models/sets that it is useful to duplicate?

An extra copy of the boxed game. It comes with extra dice and 3 ships, a $52 value for $40! Then get one of everything (including individual ties and xwings) and go from there

As above, unless you have friends who also play, in which case you could split between rebels and imperials. I started with two box sets and one else of everything. It gets expensive quickly that way. I'm sorely tempted to pick up more tie interceptors though. Those things bleed awsomeness! Possibly another x-wing aswell. But definatley more interceptors!

(Just my own 2 cents here)

I bought...

2 complete game boxes
1 each of the X-wing and TIE expansions(impotant because the expansions come with different pilots)
2 each of the Y-wing, A-wing, TIE Advanced & TIE Interceptor
1 each of the larger ships

If I had to do it over I would have only bought 1 TIE Advanced to get Vader. The other one I got tends to sit on the shelf and just look pretty.

If all I had was 1 game box and I was gonna buy 2 small ships to go with it I would get 1 TIE Advanced and 1 the X-wing expansion. That way you can run the trench with Luke, Wedge, Vader, and Vader's 2 wing men

yeah,
Most Rebel Lists have 3-4 ships.
Most Empire Lists have 4-8 ships

Rebels lists won't go above 5 ships and Empire lists can't go higher than the 8 tie fighter acadamy pilot swarm!

A second copy of the game is IMO almost an auto purchase at £24?
Your second x-wing and a 3rd and 4th tie figher.
6 more die - great as some rolls require 3-5 dice.
Extra templates - so each player has a set at their side of the table
(I've listed the total wargamer price as I've bough all my x-wing stuff from them.
I've not had any real problems with them getting my stuff a week or so after release date.
warning - there is a thread about how slow they can be!)

now you only need 1 or 2 rebel and 1 or 2 empire expansions to make most lists.

Each expansion has 1 ship plus unique pilots, droids and upgrades.
So its worth buying at 1 each of the xwing and tie fighter sets to get access to the unique pilots and upgrades.

If you buy 1 more core set plus 1 x-wing and one tie fighter you'll have
3 x-wings and 5 Ties plus all the unique pilots from those sets.

after that you can pick and choose what to add in as you go along from the other sets.

I'd suggest as a minimum
2 core sets (you already have 1)
1 tiefighter
1 Tie interceptor
1 tie advanced to get Darth Vader!

1 x-wing
1 y-wing
1 a-wing

You'll have 5 rebel ships to pick from and 7 empire ships
You'll also have one of each small ship/pilot options.

I went and ordered one of everything that the Troll Trader had in stock as it worked out a smidge cheaper than Wayland (although they didn't have every set available).

I took your advice and got a second core set so now I have:

2 X wings
1 A Wing
1 Millenium Falcon
4 TIE fighters
1 TIE Interceptor
1 SLAVE1

Couldn't resist the big kits even though I might not necessarily be using them just yet until I get to grips with the core rules. So I guess the next really mandatory purchases have to be a Y Wing and a TIE Advanced.

Incidentally, I must recommend Troll Trader - ordered my stuff on Friday, got free 1st Class recorded postage, dispatched Friday afternoon and arrived Saturday. Great service!

Is it worth buying the standalone X-Wing and TIE Fighter sets given that I already have 2 core sets? Do you get extra pilots in the standalone sets?

Definitely.
Wedge Antilles is a pretty key X-wing pilot that you only get in the expansion and I think you get Howlrunner with the Tie expansion, who is a pretty vital part of most Tie swarm lists.

I am clearly insane. Over the last few months, I've picked up a total of 3 starter boxes (just a fantastic value), and single ships to get me to this point:

2 Y-Wings
4 X-Wings
3 TIE Advanced
1 Millenium Falcon
1 Slave One

And 12 TIE Fighters. Hey, what can I say, I like having full squadrons. And you can bet your butt I'll be filling out the rest of my squadrons, too.

Yes! You will find upgrade cards that are not in the starter in both the X-Wing and Tie Fighter blisters and additional pilots not in the starter. This site actually contains a list of the cards included in each set (though incomplete with the new wave):

So far I have:

2 Core sets
2 X-Wings
2 Y-Wings
2 A-Wings
1 YT-1300
2 TIE Advanced
4 TIE Fighters
2 TIE Interceptors
1 Firespray 31

And this weekend I plan on picking up 2 A-Wings, 1 YT-1300, 2 TIE Interceptors & 1 Firespreay 31 to round out my collection.

This should give me what I need to run pretty much any combo I can think of.

If you want to see what's available, check out this X-Wing Squad Builder:

http://x-wing.voidstate.com/build

This has every card available in wave 2 for you to build, store and keep track of your win-loss records for lists that you have made. You can also use this to check out lists that other people have made using the Squad Builder.
