This isn't really a rule per se, but it's something that I don't understand.

Why do you suppose it is that loyalist SM chapters cannot equip their Devastators with Autocannons? It is a typical Heavy Weapon choice that is commonly used throughout the Imperium, much like the Heavy Bolter, Missile Launcher, Lascannon, etc.

Any thoughts?

Also, how would you feel about letting a SM player use a Autocannon-equiped Dev squad in a friendly game against you?

Because the Codex Astartes forbids them?

And I'd be stoked. The less Lascannons in the enemy's list, the better.

Who knows?

And while the autocannon is nice, vanilla marines have plenty of option to get autocannon shots elsewhere. I'd rather take a missile launcher if I want a compromise between anti-tank and anti-infantry.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Are there any examples of autocannons that are carried and wielded by a single model? There might be a fluff reason for it.

Chaos havocs can wield autocannons. So thats one example of a single model wielding it. Plus pre-heresy legions can wield autocannons.

For one thing, I don't know why you'd want to equip your Devastators with autocannons...

Tru dat
I once played a 3000 pt game with SM against Orks and brought a lot of missile launcers. The sheer range and versatility of them won the game for me

Plasma cannons. Though, Havocs can take plasma guns.

The only role I can think of where their other weaponry wouldn't be better would be Monstrous Creatures. The other high Strength weapons would only put 1 Wound on each, autocannon has the potential for two. They would also double for dealing with light armour, though that's not why you'd take them to begin with.

To repeat others above, Chaos Marines since 2nd Edition, the FW Pre-Heresy legion models, and while I am not 6e current, Space Marine Scouts in older codex books could take them in stead of a Heavy Bolter or missile launcher.

Autocannons are weaker than Lascannons, but also get double the shots.

Also, if you could take them for Tactical Squads, they are more effective if you need to fire upon other foot soldiers in an emergency than a lascannon is. Also -1 shot than a Heavy Bolter, but in exchange they are more effective against higher toughness troops.

I vaguely recall the studio saying something about it back in 2nd our 3rd edition, to the effect that the autocannon came to be seen as an inferior weapon to the heavy bolter, and so was relegated to use amongst the scout companies.

Eh? Suffocation?

And here I thought we were talking about guns...

^Autocorrect strikes again, probably.

It baffles me as to why they can't use them. I'd allow it in a game, probably for convenience taking my cue from the IG Codex and suggesting it have the same points cost as a Heavy Bolter. Maybe the page on autocannons fell out of the Codex Astartes.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Now I got the image of Scout smothering sleeping Orks with pillows.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."
