So this has been circulating a fair amount online and while the viability of this project is in question that's not the question I want to ask you fair forumites. If you were offered a one way ticket to Mars what would you do? You'll die a very, very long way from home, further then any human has ever been from our little planet, away from family and those that love you, you'll be buried in ochre sands... and be remembered as one of the first. It would mean incredible sacrifice, any hope of a normal life, or even most of the comforts even the poorest in most of the western world take for granted would be gone. The risk is incredible. Colonization on our own planet is dicey enough as it was, throwing space travel into it and the hostile martian planet and you're looking at slim odds at the very very best.

So. Would you? A one way ticket to a new world, and into human history. To walk on another planet for the very first time.

Me personally? I'm applying for the program, and I can get it, I'll take it. The fact that matters is to me is this. Our species is on a clock. A very long clock by our meager perspective, but baring any other natural disaster, or we finally manage to nuke ourselves out of existence, our sun will die in a couple hundred million years. It'll take us with it unless we push out past our home system. Someone has to make the first step*, better to dare then cower in the dirt of our own planet.

Course they're selecting 24 individuals out of the entire human population, so I have much better odds for winning the lotto and buying my own pirate ship then I do of getting NEAR this program, but damn if I won't try.

*Second to be accurate, landing on our moon was step one.

Hell yeah. I'm already far away from my family, and usually in contact with them once a month or so. I have few friends. 23 would be more than now.

The only thing I really care about in life is being able to read good books and write when I fancy it. I can do that on another planet. And I get to be a pioneer, and write in a context no one has ever been in.

I'd like to be able to bring my cat, tho.

I agree with your idea and the direction of our species, and then need to explore, but not this particular statement. Our understanding of heliophysics is growing, and from the last 3-4 or more decades of research our class of star will live much longer than this (for at least a few more billion), and will outlast our species. Who knows who or what will inhabit this system when Sol finally uses up all of it's hydrogen?

I admire anyone that has seriously thought about it and is applying. Me, well... The bleak future and not having much to do in my spare time might make me go crazy and try to kill everybody with an axe. So I think I'll pass.

Maybe if you do get selected, Kalishnikov, you could take up a little Dakka flag.

I'd like to think I could do it, to go for Humanity's betterment. But when it came down to it? I don't think I could take the step.

I wouldn't go. Definately not. I am NOT opposed to visiting/colonising other worlds. But I am going to say, we only have one world that we are on, we need to learn to take care of it before visiting other worlds.

I heard about Mars One when it was first announced, and have tried to keep up-to-date with the project. I think it would be an incredible experience, and something I would love to do. But there's too much here on Earth that makes me want to stay. Maybe when large-scale colonisation becomes do-able then I'll up sticks, but I don't know whether that will happen in our lifetime :(

Also; if you haven't already; read the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. It should be required reading for anyone planning on going.

A big fat no as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather spend my years exploring an amazing live planet than have a few hours/days/weeks exploring a boring dead one.

I am too old and too settled. I'd never leave my wife and kids to go be a peasant on Mars.

I really don't think this should be open to anyone over 25 or so. Make sure they're old enough to have some necessary skills and are young enough to be unattached. Then you can get a good 40 years or so of good, hard colonization work out of them. Older individuals would have a less easy time adjusting to the spartan, dorm-esque living conditions.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Sooner or later we must go. Humanity must escape the cradle, or die in it. We have to go, if needs be I would step forward and go.

No, because I've got to take care of the kids. Taking care of 2 kids is more important than fame, science, coolness, and the good on the entire human race.

Good luck.

I'ld go, I've thought quite a bit about applying too, pretty sure I wouldn't get in due to various medical reasons, let alone my lack of skills that would likely be necessary for this journey. I would want to bring some puppies, at least enough to have a constant supply. That would probably be my only condition.

While you can't play multiplayer you could still play singleplayer, or against your fellow colonists. Apparently the human lab rats who were locked in that pressurized had zone for three years to simulate a trip to mars spent the time playing copious amounts of counterstrike.

Were it that I thought I had explored every part of this planet I would probably go. As it is though there is so much keeping me here, all the different countries, people and landmarks that I have yet to visit.

And who knows? There is always the chance that by the time the first colonists arrived on Mars that we would already have developed transport to get there in a fraction of the time. Imagine how much it would suck to be sitting in your little space rocket and see a new and improved vessel blasting past you!

I would stay on earth, it has a nice temperature, looks pretty, I like breathing it's air and there's lots of people to socialize with (7 billion in fact). Also I'm 20 so there's a lot of new things that I want to experience on earth before I leave.
