Hey guys, just got some MaskFX digital pattern camouflage masking sheets and thought I'd give them a go on my gun drones. I've just started painting a tau army as you can see from the back of the photo I'm about 90% finished with one unit of fire warriors and have the next unit basecoated.

I'm going to have a stab at painting my vehicles and stealth suits like this. Questions, comments and criticisms welcome!

Very sexy... A tutorial on how you do that would go down well I think especially if you did it all by hand !

First of all... Yes, these look great.

2nd .... Thank you for letting me know that MaskFX exists, because I have been trying to figure out a way to digicam my Tau for the last 2 weeks.... I am thinking of using the 15mm to do digicam on my Fire Warriors as well.

I will post up a tutorial tomorrow at some point, I used an airbrush but it is possible by hand!

15mm is what I have used here on my drones, it's quite a bit bigger than you would expect so I'm not sure it would be suitable with Fire Warriors. I have the 25mm as well that I was going to use on my Hammerhead but looking at it now I think the 25mm may actually be far too large!

No criticisms, no questions, so it'll have to be comments: these are excellent. I also like the bases, the paint scheme fits them perfectly and they look really bleached by the sun.

Stealth suits are one of my favourite models, and if you're going to paint them like this...well, I can't wait to see them.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Very nice. Digital camo really suits the Tau. Are you going to use it only on "armor", or on all flat surfaces, or on all "hard" surfaces?

I'll likely keep it to big stuff like vehicles, I was only really doing it on the drones as a sort of test run. Very tempted to do it on my Riptides though!

Looks good! Always have been a fan of desert schemes. A tutorial and more WIP shots would be awesome. Keep up the good work.

Looks really good mate. The digi camo works well with Tau and your drones are no exception. The mix of greys looks superb.

Awsome, what colors did you use? And where could I find those digi cam sheets in Canada?

I ordered them from http://www.criticalmassgames.com/ - no idea if anywhere else stocks them.

Here's a picture:

Here are the colours I used:

I first used my airbrush to paint a layer of Steel Legion Drab.

After putting on the first layer of masking tape (3 or 4 segments), my second layer of paint was airbrushed on; a 1:1 mix of Baneblade Brown and Bleached Bone.

Once the second layer was dry I applied another few segments of masking tape, then the third and final layer was applied with Army Painter Skeleton Bone Primer, alternatively you can just use Bleached Bone or equivalent.

Note: it is entirely possible to do all stages by hand, you do not need an airbrush, just make sure your paints are appropriately thinned and your masking tape is stuck down securely.

For the wash I used the following:

Once all the paint was dry, I carefully removed the masking tape with a hobby knife. Then I gave the model a wash with a 1:1 mix of Army Painter Strong Tone and Thinner Medium, before the wash dries it is important to use a clean wet brush and remove the majority of the wash from the flat surfaces of the model. This shades the recesses, and flattens the colours somewhat, giving a weathered appearance and a nice matte finish.

These look great. And thanks for the tutorial, I've got some haqqislam remotes to paint soon and this will suit them well.

Your Paint Scheme Looks amazing, I am not going to copy it exactly, just replicate it with different colors. So if i may ask what were the colors and steps to paint your fire warriors?

Colours for the Fire Warriors are similar to the drones. I use Army Painter Skeleton Bone to prime them first.

Then I paint all the cloth parts with Steel Legion Drab:

Then I apply a wash of 1:1 Army Painter Strong Tone and Thinner Medium, same as on the drones, and add some Macharius Solar Orange to the front shoulder panel.

Then I add the details; eye lenses and sept markings:

Looks awesome. Glad you told us to use the 15mm, I almost bought the larger.
Can you reuse the stickers, or are they one time use?

Thanks for the tip on MaskFX, I had no idea it was available.

I haven't tried it but they were still pretty sticky when I peeled them off, I'd say you could use the same piece at least twice.

I think the 25mm one would work well on Riptides and big things, I'm going to try it soon I'll post back with pics.

Love how simple and effective your scheme is. I've been driving myself mad over picking a Tau scheme so it's good to see!

Awesome thanks for the info, I already ordered the digi tape,
Another thing, do you think using agrax earthshade watered down would be a good enough substitute for the 1:1 wash mix?
