I want to start this by saying ive been a massive fan of 40k a very long time and had spells building armies and colleting and battleing all my life but I have just started reading the novels and I just finished reading "salamander"

My point is how amazing would it be if warhammer 40k was real? I mean come on I know about the whole galactic wars and stuff but think about it ? terra/earth wouldn't have any issues with goverments, tax problems, benefits !

Maybe its being a little lost again in the world of 40k but I think it would be utterly cool if drop pods and strike cruisers rained in our sky tomorrow and the emperor came to claim this world and we all could trial as neophytes

thanks for reading anywayz

Wait, are we talking about the same 40k here, or did you find some alternate 40k book to read? Because I'm pretty sure the 40k universe defines "dystopian future", where suffering and futility are all 99% of the population knows and the best you can possibly hope for is to spend your entire (probably short) life fighting on the most horrible battlefields imaginable. No thanks, I think I'll wait for a better universe to come along.

Hruotland - I am training for the army as we speak and that is life ambition so I understand about the war

and I was more referring to the honour and the pride and the discipline that would come with such a empire the emperor would offer ! yeah I understand the grim future of the 40k universe but what about the grim future of our present "planet earth" ????? famine, genocide, dictators, terrorism, recession, imagrants, etc. I can continue that list

everything just seems all straight forward and black and white in 40k

More like black and black. You have a choice between the genocidal oppressive theocracy or being devoured by horrifying aliens, and the "good guys" are an aggressive expansionist empire that is only "good" because it offers you the chance to submit and be conquered before they exterminate you. Meanwhile death and failure are inevitable, and the only "victory" is that the end is delayed a bit longer at the cost of unimaginable suffering. 40k takes the current world, removes all the good things and expands the worst things to an epic scale. There is nothing even remotely appealing about the thought of living there, and if you see it as anything more than a hell worse than death you haven't really paid much attention.

Ah, lovely. I always wanted to be:
1) nomed by Tyranids
2) slaved and suffer ever physical mutilation by Dark Eldar
3) belittled and then killed by Eldar
4) flayed alive by Necrons
5) chopped up and shot at (at the same time most likely) by Orks
6) being shot for not following the Tau way
7) blammed cuz I gave the Commissar a weird look
8) burned alive by a Sister of Battle because she saw me sneeze in front of the Emprah's picture
9) expendable so that the Space Marines can do their job easier
10) removed from existence so that no one remembers me cuz I saw a Silver Space Marine
11) be slaved and suffer ever physical AND mental mutilation twice over by Chaos.

The 40k universe is enthralling no doubt, and very entertaining in many ways as on outside observer. I don't think however that I would want to spend my days in that future. It might be a good proposition is you were an Astartes, or a Primarch simply because they were bred for that life on a genetic level. But to be a rank file "human" in the 40K dystopian future, a little too bleak for me.

Amazing?

The average human-- IE you-- is worked to death in a factory earning, at best, a pittance barely able to pay for basic life necessities-- before they either die cold and alone, or a horrible gruesome death. If you're lucky, you might get born as a noble, where you have a more exciting life, but you'll probably be assassinated in a horrible, painful way that leaves you dying cold and alone. If you're unlucky, you'll get drafted in the Imperial Guard, where you will die a horrible, painful death, cold and alone. If you're even more unlucky, you'll be born on a feral world, where the best you can hope for is maybe, MAYBE participating in a qualifying match to be a candidate for a Space Marine, and where you will probably die a horrible, painful death, cold and alone-- even if you'd qualify, you'd probably end up dying anyway because you'd be rejected by the implants.

If you're REALLY unlucky, you'll be born a Psyker, where you will suffer attempts on your very soul and body for the rest of your life, and not all of them from daemons-- you'll probably be sent to feed the astronomican, or have your eyes burned out and be turned in to an astropath. Or one of any number of torturous methods of ensuring discipline to psykers, such as pin-prickings, tongue-brandings, having you scream your faith until your voice box burns out, etc. You won't die cold and alone. You might want to, however, given the horrors that will hound your every thought.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

You forgot at least:
12) Exterminatus (rare, but not impossible)
13) "Cleansed" by Grey Knights because you saw too much of the daemons (this even in case you improbably survived point 11)
14) Disposed of by an operative of Officio assassinorum, in case you became somewhat important and power got to your head

And that skipping the fate for law-unabiding people, who get turned into mindless servitors or daemonhosts.

How amazing would it be? Well, it's either a boring job as a PDF soldier (That may or may not end with a painful, horrible death at the hands of some alien horror), a miserable existence on a factory world (That may or may not end with a painful, horrible death at the hands of some alien horror), a grueling life as an Imperial Guardsman (That may or may not end with a painful, horrible death at the hands of some alien horror) or a soulless existence as a Space Marine (You get the idea).

Plus, chances are you aren't going to see anything besides other humans during your life even as a guardsman. More likely, you'll have the exact same life as you do now but under a worse government.

Well taht depends. I'm fairly certain that the government would be better than North Korea's. But that's only because the Imperium is at least marginally competent.

The 40k IoM's government is all the worst aspects of fascism, communism and a religious totalitarian regime, if you can name a form of atrocity that humans have visited on humans . then it is likely somewhere in the ROE of IoM's playbook, as a SOP.

Its a nasty dark place, the whole universe is, and that's why it makes a good setting for continual war, war being the absolute worst state of being for any race (other than orks, of course).

And just as a curiosity, if you feel all the worlds governments are horrible, why would you plan on joining the military and enforcing that governments will .

I have served , been in combat ( in multiple deployments) and am now medically retired, and I will happily tell you war is a lot better when its little plastic guys doing the dying.

Hmmm.... Let me think about this for about 2 secs. Go to war ...been there, done that! Certainly don't want to do it again! Live under a imperialistic torturous regime never done it but seen the side affects, NO THANKS! Be drug into pointless servitude, once again saw the after affects, yeah I think I will pass on that. So is there anything about 40K that I would like to see IRL? No! Let's just keep it in the books and on the table ....Thank you.

There is death, famine, disease and genocide in our world. However how much of that affects you? Not a lot id wager considering you have an active internet connection.

I would not like to live in a universe where everywhere is basically wwii Russia that's at risk of having its population killed/eaten/tortured/enslaved every day.

Are you thinking of the Pokemon Universe? Because that's the fantastic bright happy existence where you get free money and spend your days going on adventures. 40K, however, is the one where unless you are someone extremely important (and even then there's no guarantee) you WILL die a horrible and bloody death.
