That's a nice squad of Marines. I especially like the glowy-orange/red power sword.

I vote for either bikes or a character for your next project.

Thanks. I like orange/hot power swords too though I need to refine my technique.

I have bikes nearly ready to prime. I guess I have characters too though really. Not sure if I'm ready for Fistivius Fistigar and his honor guard yet or not.

I'm also considering some Sanguinary Guard for angel themed elite jump troops cause why not. But only after I get a notable chunk of marines painted.

Kinda dreading this drop pod... But I'll make it work.

You could use different choir of angels https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_angels for different companies or even squads within companies.

I vote more marines (tactical) so you have the core out of the way before you get to do the fun stuff.

Aww don't try to keep me toeing the line Theo! Force Org is both boring AND implies that I intend to play 40k

I suppose I could dig out my land speeder storm and crew. Scouts are fun, different at least. I have a largely completed Librarian though his shade of blue is different from my team.

Besides the fact that there's nothing stopping the.. what Azure Order? Whatever, nothings stopping them from teaming up with the Shadow Knights in a joint deployment within the same metaphorical force org chart.

Something, not 100% I'll be ready for another tactical right away. Although... I'll be doing robed DA plastic marines and they're 50-70% robes anyway so maybe they won't be so bad. Mostly arms and backpacks that get the blue.

I've still got to get through this drop pod. I've fished out the guts but they're going to have to be largely not assembled if I want any kind of decent paint job on them, and then I have to somehow coax them into the pod. Meesh, they're neat but they're a lot of work. Glad I only own three.

As for the angel company names that isn't a bad idea, but I think I'd feel like they're deviating too far from their supposed DA heritage.

I think I'm gonna have the 10 regular companies, the vets, 3 battle companies, 3 reserve companies, plus the devastator, assault, and scout companies. The vet company won't be exactly Deathwing, as I like the idea of Sternguard and command squads/honor guard. The second company won't be ravenwing but it will have a larger than codex allotment of bikes, jumpers, speeders and so on.

The rest are straight codex. The white right black left pauldron configuration will probably be 3rd company and I'll be using it on the second batch of robed marines (who are slated for tacticals and not sternguard). The sternguard (and I gotta have some sterns) will be part of the 1st veteran company probably with double black pads along with the terminators. Not sure which way to do the assault company pads. The bikers and potential sanguinary guard/vanguard vets I'm not as sure about. Those guys will probably have a lot of white from their bike details and wings, though double white pads *would* be a nice foil for the double black of 1st company.

Anyway lots of musing lol. I still have to survive this vehicle

Assault pads could be quartered with black and white while the devestators could be halved horizontally. Then command squads could have a slash through them. It's similar to dark angels.

I like them. Looks really good and actually pretty damn different to most colour schemes you see on Marines. Well done. I still think something to do with cold is the way to go for chapter names. Storm Banshees, Blizzard Riders, frost knights.

I'll have to check that out.

Drop pod coming along. I knew washing/glazing over vehicle sized panels would be problematic and the results are largely as expected. It looks ok from 3 feet and matches the marines at least.

The interior is part assembled and primed. Gonna leave it mostly silver so not a lot of work there.

Got a lot of touch-up work fixing the messy blue step but it should be somewhat quick.

Maybe tonight maybe next week who knows lol.

Itchin to dig out my magnetized scouts and lss for troop #2. They're about as different as I can get and deserve paint. Should look largely like ultra scouts but my shades of blue and brown.

Will have to fashion sly magnetic bases for them since they attach that way to their speeder. Gonna mean scenery elements on clear acrylics but what can you do.

Torn on further marines as troops. My robed guys all have highly decorative pauldrons and helmets and probably need to be company vets/sternguard. Aside from scraping the bottom of the AoBR marine bucket I'm stuck repainting the shadow knights. I guess I can stop with two for now though.

Pod looks great. Almost has a stone like effect to the blue on the pod.

A very good looking squad for the first addition to the force.

Thanks guys

The blue is done by going medium-dark grey then highlighting 2 lighter greys then white. The pod was tedious so I skipped the middle grey. Then the blue glaze/wash. So it basically is a stone technique.

Ahem.
Nice work on the Marines, Grim. I like the scheme - the black and white both look good against the Azure, though I'm not 100% sold on the tan/brown robes alongside brightly coloured armour.

Nice looking marines. Pod also turned out well. Despite it’s disadvantage of starting out as a hate drenched hellspawn.

I’ve done a little quartering. It’s not as bad as I’d thought it would be. I’m sure you could make it work if you put your mind to it.

For what to paint next, I’d just keep mixing things up. 8th edition is just around the corner, and would be a great time to experiment in getting into the game. A core of a couple tac squads with a handful of specialists to support them should make for a fun list, regardless of what changes. Built to the theme and fluff of your army, and you rarely get left out in the cold. At least for casual play.

Thanks folks

Josh, it has been together for years but i don't remember it being terrible, just have to take your time and follow instructions i think.
The guts were pretty fiddly but even that wasn't too bad.

What color would you suggest Az?

Nev, pods aren't soooooo bad... If 8e is more like AoS and especially if there are less models needed... it isn't impossible. I have a loooot of magnets so change is easy

How important are the 32mm bases? I could get some I guess before i go too far... Some bike pill bases too unless those are likely to become round for 8e or something...

Trying to decide on a leader for the force. Since i don't think i can put one in the pod, i probably need a jetpack guy to keep up. Or do some pods fit 12 even though the model doesnt?

And if jump, do I convert a chaplain, librarian or captain? Captain would have to either be a relic blade or better yet a power spear and storm shield... Chappy obviously would have crozius and maybe a pistol. Libby I dunno, I got those on foot though.

I think just ...not an earth tone. You could go for high-contrast like red, but then there's no red elsewhere on your heraldry. Perhaps black (or a really, really dark grey to represent black).

At the moment it's like you've got these brightly armoured marines covering their armour with a sort of dirty brown robe. If the robes were smaller (like small tabards, or only hoods) it could work but the full DA-sized robes are more intrusive and so (for me at least) they need to integrate more to be less intrusive and be mroe a part of the "uniform" or heraldry.

Hmmm i see what you're saying. Maybe really dark grey because meh black, almost as bad as white.

Hmm I may give it a try on another figure.

Actually, I have black robed grey armored marines I could try the blue on.... I'll give it a shot.

If you want a jump character, the chaplain is the first, last, and only answer. OK, that’s a bit excessive. But he should be your first choice. Chaplains want to be in the thick of it crumping heads. Jump packs get them there. Other jump squads often need a little help; chaplains do that. So do librarians, but they do it with wacky space magic. Chaplains do it with pure zeal and hate. None of this “miscast” or “dispel” junk.

All that said, there isn’t really a bad answer. Every edition of the rules, a different HQ type has been the “best”. No idea what’s in store for 8th.

If you're still considering chapter names, I like the sound of "Sons of Grimdor." You might get a bit more ownership with that name and it doesn't clash with the tone as much as "Sons of Grimdork."

Grimdor was a captain of the (predecessor chapter) who was tasked with commanding a new chapter in the (number) Founding. Under his leadership, the chapter earned many accolades and after his death in battle, his successor proclaimed that the chapter would be renamed the Sons of Grimdor in his honour.

Primaris Marines. Hmm. I need more information on those before I paint any more space marines lol.

Any guesses on cost? I'm betting $10 a pop or maybe $12. Sell em In squads of 5 basically like terminators.

I don't care. It'll be a bitter pill but I want some. If they're stupidly expensive to collect for a 40k elite force then I'll still use them for TNT power armor or SWA teams. Or just fugging shelf pretties. I don't care I needs them.

Not exactly true scale still but they look neat.

So here's one of my black robed guys repainted to have the new blue. Needs re sealed and touched up but I think this is good enough to get the point across. Thoughts? Right pad is black due to company, robed troops would still have the white.

Hmm on a side note... TNT or SWA? Preservers vs some kind of Inquisition force maybe.
