I've been collecting BFG and EPIC 40k models for awhile but never really played either game. I'm curious as to what make up a standard size force for each game. For example how many cruisers or ships makes a decent size BFG force and how many vehicles and titans makes up a standard epic force? Thanks!

Hello,
For BFG, about 4-6 Capital ships and about half a dozen escorts will be sufficient to make up a 1000-1500 point force. If you so desire, the escorts are optional.* It's the Cruisers/Light Cruisers you want enough of; they're your "Troops" choices, so to speak.
*: YMMV
This can probably include, depending on your playstyle:
- A Flagship (Battleship/Grand Cruiser Class)
- A Battlecruiser/Heavy Cruiser or two
- A few Cruisers/Light Cruisers
- A few to several Escorts (If you want) Automatically Appended Next Post: Edit: Don't know much about Epic.

Depends on the version of Epic for a start. Also depends how long you want the game to run for. I recently played a game of 2nd Ed Epic of about 8K points per side and it took a fair while. My 6x4 foot table was also more or less full so I wouldn't have liked to have tried any more than that without playing for longer on a larger table.

BFG depends alot on your race also. IN/Chaos/Craftworld Eldar you will want mostly cruisers as stated above, Nids/Corsair Eldar/Orks are pretty escort heavy with a few big cruisers/battleships, Dark Eldar/Tau/necrons are all pretty 50/50 capitols to escorts maybe tipping just towards one or the other.

Well, as for size, I would say you would need to judge by version of the game. I personally play NetEpic, and in that, amounts of Viechles, Titans, and Infantry Vary by faction and preference. I would say that, short of some great deals on ebay, your far better off proxying your epic force, as their are non-gw sources for the scale that are blatantly suppurior, especially now that GW is saying "feth you" to all of us who like the specialist games.

Is it possible to field an all landraider force in Epic?

In Epic Armageddon, yes. However that army will be quite vulnerable to infantry + heavy weapons (macro or titan killer).
For original question. These are assumptions for regular 3000 point game. Titans are not needed to be in army. However it might include two small (Warhound / Revenant size) or one larger (Reaver or Warlord). Usually larger then probably will decide a bit more on how the rest of the army is built. Vehicles depends heavily on army. IG tends to have more while Orks less.

I was thinking about getting a space marine company and than a couple of landraiders and a warhound titan. Would that be a good starter force?

I would think so. The latest video report that I did in here shows a marine force using all of those .

with Epic you wanna keep your activations in mind so you do not get out-activated each turn. for example, a well rounded list has 3-4 activations per 1000 points. so your standard 3000 point list should have between 9 and 12+ activations. Forcing too many large formations will bog down your activations.
for instance, my standard Adeptus Mechanicus PDF 3000 point list looks like this:
Demi- Century, Techlord 5 Chimera, Hydra 575
3 Stormswords, Hydra 550
Ordanitus Armageddon, 2 Hydras 650
1 Deathstrike 100
4 sentinels 100
Baneblade 200
Baneblade 200
Shadowsword 200
2 tBolts 150
Warhound Titan (Plasma Blastgun and Mega Bolter) 275
standing at 10 activations i feel comfortable with this list. but looking at other options i could move a few things out for a Reaver titan but then i would be very low on activations, forcing all my formations to do a lot of work to stay competitive.

In NetEpic it's legal (there's a Space Marine company card for a Land Raider company), but I don't think it would be all that effective - Land Raiders are really more heavy transports than true combat vehicles in Epic scale.
Do you know which version of Epic you're looking at playing?

If you are going with the NetEA version of epic then you can run all land raiders as a core heavy SM force. 4 land raiders is 325 points no upgrades out of the codex astartes army list. so in a 3000 point game you are looking at 9 formations with 4 land raiders each. this nets you 2925 points. Perhaps add a single hunter to one of the formations for some anti aircraft potential because you are gonna need it.
Perhaps a more well rounded force will serve you better. I just threw this list together, it is 2775 out of 3000. Gives you room for some commanders and upgrades if you need it.
Tactical (6 marine stands, free rhinos + 1 Hunter) 350
Tactical (6 marine stands, free rhinos + 1 Hunter) 350
Scouts (free rhinos) 150
Terminators (4 stands with Supreme Commander) 450 points
Whirlwinds (4 whirlsiwnds) 300
Land Speeders (5 Land Speeders) 200
Land Speeders (5 Land Speeders) 200
Bikes (4 Bikes and 1 Attack Bike) 200
Thunderhawk Gunship 200
Predators (4 pred. annihilators + 1 Hunter) 375
10 activations with a decent spread of infantry and armor clearing. terminators love to teleport.

I have no clue which version I should play? Any suggestions? I currently just picked up 10 landraiders, 60 marines, and 1 warhound. Hopefully I'll get these guys painted soon.

I suggest you find out what players do you have and go with it. I like E:A myself. I haven't really played NetEpic, though I do think E:A is better than epic 2nd ed which NetEpic is based on.

Yeah, if you're looking to join an existing group then you'll just have to go with whatever they're playing. If you're looking to start a group then you'll just have to take a look at both sets of rules (both are completely free, so no harm looking) to see which one you like the look of.
I've never played E:A so can't possibly compare them.
NetEpic downloads: http://www.netepic.org/netepic.html
I don't know if there's a 'fan' version of E:A or if GW's official version is more predominantly played.

I remember my Eldar list had a good bit of activations due to having a good chunk of foot-slogging Aspect Warriors.
I remember there being:
2 Scorpion Heavy Grav Tanks
1 Heavy Grav Tank with portable webway(Tempest maybe? Forget the name.)
3 stands of Wraithguard
2 stands each of Banshees, Scorpions, Dragons, Dark Reapers, Hawks, and Dire Avengers
12 stands of Guardians
2 Wraithlords
6 War Walkers
2 Phoenix Bombers
9 Falcon Grav Tanks
2 Night Spinners
It has been a while, so I don't remember the points. When I sold these Epic miniatures they went for roughly $180. So it isn't an expensive game to get into if you find the right army for sale.
